My problem with Trinity Blood was that it felt too much like a rip of other animes, which it was.

I've only seen a couple of episodes, but I'm inclined to agree. Especially about the CG not meshing with the 2D animation. Abel's blood scythe just looked awkward (at least in episode 4, when I saw it).

I agree with most everything in the review; the score is pretty much dead-on, I always felt the show to be rather stiff, and average music wise (aside from the opening and ending).

But I still kind of like it more than Hellsing...

"do I get a prize if it turns out that Abel has a former comrade-turned-antagonist called Cain?)?"

BING BING BING

YOU WIN A PRIZE!! Sort of... Rolling Eyes

Nice review, next time break up your paragraphs, though. Oh my eyes. Mad

On that note, I always felt like I was missing out on a lot with Trinity Blood - like there was this huge, intricate, fascinating back history I was supposed to be "in" on, but no one ever bothers to explain, that would make this series far better than it is. I found myself constantly asking, "Wait, who's that dude and why's he so cool? What's with that weird ship? How did Abel get...messed up? What the HELL is going on??" That kind of thing. The episodes, particularly later on, get extremely fragmented to the point where I felt I really HAD missed an entire arc (but hadn't) and the plot really suffers for it. Again, "What the HELL is going on??" is my most vivid memory of this series.

Even though it's very derivative I really like Trinity Blood. Maybe because I haven't seen all the other anime it's supposed to be ripping off. Well I did see Hellsing but I didn't like it and they don't seem all that similar to me yet.

I've been contemplating getting this series, but after reading the review and everyone's posts I think I shouldn't bother.

Other than Vampire Doll and the Hellsing manga to some extent, I have yet to see a vampire anime/manga done right.

It's not necessary *bad*....it does what it does well, but the problem is it's all been done before. I've been watching and enjoying it on [as], but I'm glad I don't have to pay for it.

I remember Vampire Hunter D being popular back when it got licensed, I also remember one of my chat buddies talking me out of getting it because he thought it was horrible -or was it the video game version that he warned me about? Confused -

I'll check it out if it's still available, I heard that the characters were designed by Yoshitaka Amano who happens to be one of my favorite character designers Smile

Never saw the DVD, but the humor in calling a vampire flic "lifeless" was precious. Very funny.

If you like Vampire Doll I believe you are really going to like Trinity Blood. To me Vampire Doll though beautiful does not have a great plot to begin with. We'll see what happens as it progreses, but I do not think it will be more than a simple vampire comedy.

Trinity Blood comes from a novel which was then turned to a manga, and finally to an anime. I think perhaps much was lost between them. The art is even more rich in the manga/novel (as it usually is with anime/manga). I think it's all over plot and idea is interesting even if it does seem overly dramatic at times. I think it is at least worth a shot if youre a fan of the vampire genre.

Yuck, I couldn't stand watching more than a few episodes of this on Adult Swim. I'm just not in on the whole gothic/vampire anime stuff deal.

With that aside, I did think the art was pretty good, but I can't remember the music. Anyway, at least I now know what a "C" story is like in Anime News Network's reviews...

I wouldn't say that. Every reviewer is different. You know what a C story is to this particular review. They all vary greatly. If you want proof of that read the comments on the Autumn preview. The reviewers were disagreeing with each other quite a bit.

This is why we have 5 reviewers on staff and they were hand-picked according to taste so that potentially all spectrums of opinion could be represented.

Yes I know. I consider this a good thing. My statement was in no way a complaint. I was very glad to see various opinions about the new shows. I just disagreed with the idea that one ANN review means this level of plot is a C. People should always check the reviewers on ANN when reading the reviews. Some I agree with almost all the time. Some I almost always disagree with. I think you can get more out of a review when you consider the source.

Saw the first episode Friday night, and don't feel too motivated to see more. As I made clear on the "Civil discussion of Trinity Blood" in the Anime forum, it's really not my kind of anime. It seems to suffer from the GunxSword syndrome of "Hey, let's take a character that really appealed to Americans and imitate him in our show!" Not only was Abel like Vash the Stampede in mannerisms, duality, obsession over food, and clumsiness, his "bad-ass" form also felt plenty derivative--the "release nano-machines raise power restriction level blah blah blah" bit is practically stolen wholesale from Hellsing's Alucard.

Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to hear Funi's dubbing efforts, but I wonder what improvements in writing quality they brought to the table. I soooo wanted to hear a Harrison Ford imitation of "Get...off...my...plane!!" when Abel got thrown out of the airship, a moment that isn't very convincing on the animation level.

And a lot of the time on these first-volume reviews, a lot of fansub viewers will jump in and say, "Well, that's only the first 4 episodes, the show gets much better later, you can't give it a low score." In the case of this series, however, I've read many credible fan reviews indicating that it actually does not get better.
