The Encyclopedia doesn't cite him as creator, but he may have been. I dunno.
I'm not sure why someone is arrested for carrying an appoximately 3 1/2" knife, although the fact that it is approximately 3 1/2" could be a little disconcerting.

Yes, Obata is just the artist. An amazing artist, at that, but he didn't create either of these manga. Just drew them.

He's only the artist. The creators are Tsugumi Ooba for Death Note and Yumi Hotta for Hikago.

Why did he get arrested just for having a big knife in his car? That doesn't make any sense.

There is usually a lot left out of the news report on how these arrests occur. It may come out that the charges will be dismissed. Usually that occurs when the police fouled up and did an illegal search.
As for why he got arrested with a knife in the car does Japan have school zone areas or other areas such as say a goverment zone where any weapon even in your car will get you arrested if found? We do have this occuring in the states quite a number of teenagers get arrested in the South each year because they claim to forget they had their hunting gear in the car when they went back to school.
Also quite frankly the knife isn't that big. I have knives that are ten to twelve inches from hilt to tip those are used for hunting or self defense. Three inches is like a throwing knife.

American comic book jargon uses the term "creator" to basically mean anyone involved the creative process of the manga. "Creator" can refer to the writer, artist, penciller, inker, etc., and not just the person who created the characters/setting/story, etc.
This arrest is pretty ridiculous. A 6 cm knife is keychain sized....this knife below is a 5 cm blade, so imagine it just a hair bigger.
That's barely bigger than a boxcutter....

Yes, but this is not an American comic book, nor is ANN a site for American comic books. It is specified even on the American releases of Hikaru no Go and Death Note that Obata does the art, and that someone else created the story.

I assume the blade is what was 8.6 cm long, but still, that's less than 3.5 inches and hardly formidable.

I'm not an expert, but in Japan, it is forbidden to carry a knife with a blade of 6 cm or longer with you without any valid reason. The law is called Firearms and Sword Possession Control Law. This “valid reason” seems very ambiguous and I think it is up to the police to decide if the person is violating the law or not.
Looks like he told the police that he kept the knife in his car so that he can use it when he goes camping. If he was really going (or coming back from) camping, it might have not been a big problem.

Sure. Camping.
Obata probably just figured that since he didn't have a real Death Note, he could go kill Go Nagai with a knife. Pretty sneaky, sis.
And Obata is, at least, co-creator, so the headline is fine.

In America it is illegal to carry a concealed knife which the blade is wider than the palm of the officer's hand, as a general rule.
And usually they will allow for it to go over a bit.
However, you may carry a much larger knife with no trouble as long as it is fully exposed, or in a fully exposed sheath.
Now I just measured my own hand and it is 9.1 cm. So this was not a big knife at all. And it wasn't found on person either.
I don't know Japans laws so I can't judge, but from my stand point this is BS.

Well, that's just semantics. What I meant, if this is any more clear, is that a manga "creator" is someone who creates the work itself, not just the underlying concept. Obata "created" the art on those pages, so he is a "creator" on that book, regardless of whether he was the one who had the original idea.
So yeah, the headline isn't necessarily 100% accurate, but the word "creator", as it is used in that headline, is done using a widely accepted definition of the word, so it's still technically correct.

Properly used an ordinary razor blade, one of those small ones, can easily kill. It doesn't take that much pressure applied nor much length before a blade reaches a vital artery. Surprising someone and slitting their throat is very different from trying to stab someone to death. And, no matter how small, a cutting blade is still a deadly weapon. No one thought box cutters were particularly dangerous until terrorists used them to hijack four planes on September 11, 2001.
Basic rule of personal defense: Anything can be a weapon. Remember this if you are ever in a situation where someone is trying to hurt you. Heavy objects can be bludgeons, sharp objects cutting or stabbing weapons, and etc.
