how much better is the manga than the movie? cause so far i've read the like 200 pages into the 1st volume, and absolutely nothing has happened. i tired to press on in hopes that something really is big about to happen, but it's just so boring and convoluted sometimes that it almost feels like a chore. i'm one for detail and everything, but it's been over 100 pages, and the plot really hasn't gone anywhere

is this a series worth finishing?

The manga is very different from the movie. For example spoiler[Akira is still alive and not a bunch of jars!] It gets better when spoiler[Tetsuo and Akira set up the Great Tokyo Empire.] I highly recommend it.

well I've heard people say the same of the film. Yes its a big book and there are five more volumes. I to just got volume one. So I soon shall see. Many complained about the film but I loved it and I've heard that the manga though longer is thus better and more detailed etc. for it.

The Manga puts a lot more time into develloping the background, the story, the characters, eveything. While the manga has all the action of the movie and even more, its interspaced with a lot of development, and thus, I wouldn't call the manga an action manga, while I would call the movie an action movie.

If you liked the movie for its fight scenes, motor cyccle races and action in general, you may not enjoy teh manga as much. However, if the movies story really appealed to you and you're interested in learning more about the background, then the manga will definitely appeal to you.

Whatsmore, the later parts of the manga differ greately from the Anime. The Anime took the first two and a bit volumes of the manga and gave them a very abbridged and different ending. The 3rd through 6th volume sof the manga contain the rest of the story that was completely cut out of the mvoie.
