I think Slam dunk is an awesome manga. I have the Singapore version with the dust jacket a few years ago. Hopefully Viz does a good job with it.

That what made me fall in love with Slam Dunk despite not being into the sports genre. Overall, a very entertaining series with an endearing cast. The Chuang Yi version's been reprinted in the Philippines, but I haven't bought it since I can only find a few volumes here and there. Read a few chapters in RAIJIN COMICS. Guess it wasn't such a good idea to publish a weekly manga anthology in the U.S. |

As I said in the thread about the latest RTO column, this is a mangaka whose works I am interested at looking at, even if they aren't from genres I usually read. I'm actually happy to see that it's more comedy than sports, because that was the one thing I wasn't looking forward to getting into all that much.
I definitely need to pick up something by this guy at the least. Not sure which one it will be, but Slam Dunk definitely is a contender after reading this. |

Hanamichi makes this manga, and he's just too awesome for words. I can't wait to buy the actual GNs and not just the serializations in Shonen Jump >:3

Wow, Carl got this book very, very early. It isn't set to hit shelves for over a month.
Anyway, ever since I delved into Vagabond not too long ago, I've since become a big fan of Takehiko Inoue. I read the first volume of REAL upon its arrival in the US, and I cannot wait to read Slam Dunk. I'm even more eager now, after reading this review. |

From what I've seen on other sites, reviewers can get review copies weeks in advance, and some very nice copies (i.e. dust jackets) are supposedly available at Comic-Con. As for Slam Dunk, from what I've read in Shonen Jump, it's been fairly amusing. I do anticipate it to get better though, given one particular friend's enormous praise towards the series (it got him into basketball after watching the anime, he intends to buy the manga), as well as the praise it seems to get in Japan. I remember reading a poll/news post that the majority of the Japanese people (that were questioned) consider this series as one of the (if not the) most emotional manga titles they've ever read, so it's going to be interesting to see how that is the case. |

I've actually read quite a bit of this manga already, but after a while I've decided to put it on hold before I choose to buy it. It can be an entertaining series, but personally I just couldn't stand Sakuragi at times.

Well, as later volumes go. Here, Hanamichi still likes to refer to himself as "The Genius Basketman". 
Ugh. Can't Toei just swallow their pride and let FUNimation or Viz just handle the release of this series already? I mean, do people really download from this service? |

It's not so much a case of "letting" another company handle it... It's more of a case of "is any company wanting to license it?"... From what we can tell none of the companies are looking into licensing Slam Dunk, so of course Toei is going to do it themselves. If they can get a DVD distribution deal from the download service then all the better, but it's not like Toei is keeping it away from everyone else. |

I still don't see why Viz won't take a crack at the anime since they seem to believe in this series.

As you very well know JG, it's pretty much the exact same way for me.  Just picked up REAL the other day (though I have yet to read it) and of course you know all about Vagabond and I must say, this review definitely makes me excited about Slam Dunk. Takehiko Inoue is freaking awesome, isn't he? 
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing myself. |
