I'll admit last week was slightly more interesting, but your review of Tweeny Witches was what made this week's column enjoyable to read, as well as the XXXholic review.
Thanks for the great review though. |

Yay for Star Trek fans! What's sad is that I recognize most of those books just by the spine.
Tweeny Witches sounds like an interesting series, going to have to check that out. |

Today's shelf packed with high information density (sifi novels). Buy the way what's the show on TV?

As someone who's seen most of the Funi Shin-chan episodes multiple times, I'd have to personally deem it as having a lot of rewatch value. Hell, there were so many great lines crammed into some of the vignettes, it took me until the second or third viewing to catch them.

Well, I'd rate Shin-Chan as Shelf Worthy myself. I plan on buying it, and I don't really mind at all that there isn't a Japanese track since many of the Japanese pop culture jokes don't really translate over here. And I don't get tired of any of the episodes.

Now the reason why Funimation doesn't provide the Japanese sub is pure and simple: The Japanese pop culture jokes are to sophisticated and superfical, plus the western refrences are way too outdated in the Japanese version. Plus, keep in mind that Funimation payed alot for the licensed and gave an arm and leg to obtain it. To date it took them four years to grab the rights and over two years to proof and change all of the Japanese jokes. |

I'm interested in getting Shin-Chan, but I'm not interested in wasting money on it. I'll put it down on my wish list for Christmas, I can wait. Right now, the big DVD set I'm saving up for is the complete Beck series! I heard it's 69.99 dollars at Best Buy so I'm trying to save as much as I can before it gets here!
As for the collection, wow. That's a lot of novels. I own none of them, but what I do own is Death Note, a lot of those Garfield books, and I think The Far Side collection. I'm not always about manga, I like American comics, Garfield is my favorite. |

Huh. I must be getting old or something. I saw two episodes of Shin-Chan at SakuraCon and thought it was horrid. Oh well, to each his own.

I did buy it. I finished it all too, expect for the last half of the third episode and the first half of the fourth episode on the second disk, which would not play due to a bad gouge in it. Heads will roll at Animenation. For anyone looking for some Japanese love, they assembled all the Enchman clips into a single episode in Japanese as an extra. Personally, I stoped before it was done though, I wanted to preserve the sanctity of the Nazi line in the dub. That has to be the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life. |

I strongly disagree with Funimation's decision to have a dub-only release of Crayon Shin-chan. Regardless of how out of date or different the Japanese puns are, it should be the fan's decision whether or not it's out of their grasp or not. It smacks of laziness to not bothering to subtitle, and Funimation should know better.

Somewhat agreed but a friend of mine who watched it all in Japanese (she speaks Japanese) said there were a lot of jokes based around the Japanese language meaning no English speaker would get it without liner notes anyway. Personally I could care less that this wasn't subtitled but it still strikes me as odd, I guess they didn't think enough people would buy the set to combat the price of subtitling (which should be pretty darn cheap but whatever). That or they didn't attain all the licenses pertaining to Shin-Chan, Japanese audio specifically. Your review makes me quite interested in Tweeny Witches, I really must check that out. |

Then they should provide linear notes. If Bandai Entertainment can do that for Lucky Star, there's no reason Funimation can't do so for Crayon Shin-chan. It's just laziness - they went into this show half-assed. Shin deserves the entire ass. Last edited by penguintruth on Mon May 12, 2008 6:08 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'm looking forward to that as well. I've heard good things about it. But I found it for $49.98. http://www.animecornerstore.com/beck.html |

I've been watching Shin Chan on [adult swim] for a while. It's OK. I usually find the humor a little bland and tune out, but occasionally something will make me laugh. You can also watch episodes on http://www.adultswim.com for free (updated weekly), for all those people who no longer watch anime on television. I'd recommend that over purchasing the DVD. And yeah, although I've relatively little interest in the show, it's a crime that subbed episodes weren't included.
Neat collection this week, all the Cerebus phonebooks! |

Sorry, but one more thing, does anyone know which Akira Kurosawa film box that is lying next to the TV in the third picture?
