what, in your opinion was the best/worst worst series that you managed to watch in 2007? here's my list:

Best:

1. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: The best TV series Gainax has made since Evangelion. a lot of people throw around the word "epic", but this show hits it right on the head. Not only did it have likable characters, but they managed to fit more storyline into 26 episodes, than a lot of have done in 50. Also the animation and soundtrack were fantastic.

2. Darker Than Black: Even though it slipped towards the end, it was overall a really good show. the fight scenes were great, and the music fits perfectly with everything. You could call it X Men meets Cowboy Bebop.

3. Gunbuster/Diebuster: Two of the best OAV's i've ever seen. I like Gunbuster because it seemed to be focused more on the dramatic element more, Diebuster however, had a lot more action, and the art was way better. What made both great though was the sheer scale of the action sequences. Instead of just fighting a few ships, every battle consisted fighting millions of enemies at once. definitely recommended.

Worst:

Virus Buster Serge: ugh... it's not even worth it. the less said, the better. Laughing

Most Disappointing:

1. Claymore: Started off really good, but once it got towards the end, the show just started to get really bad. the plot made no sense, the quality was horrible, and the ending was just embarassing.

2. Devil May Cry: This should've been really good, but someone decided it was a good idea to make it episodic, instead of following the actual plot. Not only that, but the episodes weren't even very good. seriously, how do you make an anime based on Devil May Cry with almost no action? it's just absurd. Also the level of quality was far below Madhouse standards.

3. Code Geass: It's not that I think it sucks, I just don't think it's as good as everyone makes it out to be. I mean it has some great moments, but in my opinion, the writing was really bad. the show tries too hard to be Gundam instead of resolving actual plot points, and the whole spoiler[Euphie massacre] just seemed like an act of desperation. The second season looks interesting though, and i'm curious how that cliffhanger is resolved.

Up in the air:

1. Ghost Hound: So far the it's the best series out of the fall season, but there's still not enough to judge where it's going.

2. Baccano: I watched like 9 episodes so far, but I still don't feel like anyting has really happened. a lot can be resolved in 4 episodes though.

3. Jyuushin Enbu: For being from the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, this show sure is generic. i'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt though, since it's still early.

so that's how my year went.

So is this a "best I've seen in 2007" list, then? You should probably clarify that because you're all over the place on Japanese releases, American releases, and older series that just happened to finally be aired on American TV.

Seriously, if you're going to make such a list, you should be consistent.

"managed to watch" he said, so my list is going to be whatever I saw between 1/1/2007 and 1/1/2008

Best:

Lucky Star - Very loose and very funny. I have no idea why they're shown as high school 2nd years (it would've been preferable to say that they were elementary students, given how they were drawn and the fact that some of them still didn't have cellphones...) but other than that, no problems at all. The lack of plot is well more than made up by the humor.

Worst:

Code Geass - Worst because it was the most disappointing. Most disappointing because of the ridiculous rating it has in the ANN encyclopedia, when the series was like watching two hypocrites argue with guns over and over and over... Heavily reminds me of Gundam Seed, minus the cool gundams.

Oh no!:

Genshiken 2 - I was unable to watch this series but I want to bet that it probably would've beaten Lucky Star as my anime of the year. I loved the first season and the ANN encyclopedia seems to say that the second season didn't disappoint.

/Happy New Year!

This saddens me. I was a fan of the games but I was afraid they were going to do to the anime what they did with Advent Children; make it in to a mess of a story to loosely tie in over the top action. Honestly though I don't see how they could possibly do the opposite and make an anime with little action based on the games.

For me 2007 was a very slow year in the anime world and a lot of the series I've started that have finished their releases I still haven't finished simply because I haven't gotten around to completing the purchases. I'll make due with what I have though, here's my best:

Ergo Proxy - This anime really impressed me from the start. While I'm not usually big on opening sequences, this is one of the rare cases I just love watching the opener and could easily listen to it repeatedly for awhile before tiring of it. I loved the slow and philisophical pace of the anime but I felt it got a tad to slow as it went on and really felt like it was dragging its feet at times. Still though I loved it in the end and felt that it received a decent conclusion.

The character designs and personalities were diverse and interesting and the whole post-apocalyptic art style was done quite well as it didn't depend quite so much on broken cities and decay as that style usually does but showed a natural(of sorts) post apocalyptic world too.

Noein - I still haven't finished this one but it's been a great ride so far and I can't imagine it'll let me down at this point. The complexity of the story and alternate dimensions has really captured my interest and how well the writers are making use of it. While I actually find Yu to be a bit sad and annoying I think Haruka more than makes up for his shortcomings. The other characters have their own distinct personalities and are portrayed quite effectively.

The art style is the more unique part of the series. Despite having a style that looks like they're cutting corners at first glance the production quality actually seems to be quite impressive. The sweeping score can be a bit overpowering at times but does a really nice job in most scenes of conveying atmosphere and action. I really like the dub of the series as well I have to say; I think they did a great job casting this one, especially Haruka's voice as it just seems to fit her perfectly. This is at the top of my "finish it asap" list and I'd have finished it sooner if I didn't have to panic order all my Geneon releases in October and November due to them going out of print; and of course my December funds were consumed by Christmas.

Solty Rei - This one gets my surprise of the year award; previously earned by Scrapped Princess and Gunslinger Girl. Everything I read about it had "generic" written all over it but I was looking for a new series to pick up and it seemed like an interesting enough premise to pick up. I was surprised when it managed to not only be a fun and creative series but to also provide quite a bit of depth and a well written story by about the midpoint. I mean, it's no Haibane Renmei or Ergo Proxy with deep philisophical undertones but it certainly rose above just being the generic series I first figued it would be. In the end it was also able to preserve the fun and comedic aspects I was initially interested in and I really appreciate the ability to balance those elements effectively.

I really liked the dub in this one but must admit I'm also quite the Carrie Savage fan so there's probably some degree of bias involved there. The dub and sub both seemed to be decent though I also have to admit I haven't viewed the sub entirely through at this point, I usually watch it both ways but so far I just haven't gotten around to it. The art and animation quality was also better than I expected it to be while the soundtrack never really stuck out to me, at this point I don't think I could even hum a single tune from the series as none come to mind.

Okay, now for my worst:

Afro Samurai - Well, the whole cool hip hop Samuel Jackson thing wasn't enough to really draw me in. In fact after awhile it just got to be annoying. It really felt like that was the only selling point they even cared about with this series as it just didn't have any elements beyond that which really seemed remotely interesting or creative. Was just another revenge story with a "super cool" slant added to it to seemingly draw in a new crowd and maybe I'm not part of that crowd but it just didn't work for me.

Samuel Jackson did a great job being ... well, Samuel Jackson; but that just wasn't enough. The art style just didn't draw me in and felt a bit too gritty. The music really wasn't my cup of tea either. In the end it just felt like a show made for the sole purpose of demonstrating how hip and urban anime could be and it's like they forgot to work on any other aspect of it beyond that.

Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ - This is another movie that seems to fall in a trap I notice all too often in anime. It sets itself up well and introduces the characters and the world they live in and gets you ready for a nice well told story. Then about halfway through it's as if the writers suddenly realize, "Hey, this is just a short movie, not a whole series" and they quickly mash together an ending including lots of action and a typical good vs. evil showdown and all that development and most of those introduced characters are forgotten in the process.

I really think the movie had potential had they extended it maybe another 30 to 90 minutes, the longer the better. Instead it felt like a weak rushjob that managed to dismiss a lot of the elements that had attracted my interest so it could create a conclusion involving two cliche characters making stupid mistakes and then coming together to get past them; oh yay, I've never seen that one happen before. I loved the art and the music was unique even though I can't really say for sure if that's a good or bad thing, sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't. No notable voice performances were done aside from a few of the minor characters the story quickly forgot about when they decided to rush towards the end. In the end I think there was some amazing potential here that was completely wasted by poor writing and pacing and weak main characters the story decided to rely on solely in the later half.

This reminds me, I really have to update my "my anime" list as that's a bit out of date. I'll make it a point to do so in the coming weeks here.

The 3 best series I discovered this year :

1. Texhnolyze: Waouh, I loved Lain and BoogiePop but Texhnolyze is a lot better. That was the first time I watched a series and didn't understand everything when I finished it. I love the way each character uses to survive, but the most interesting character was sensei (doc) to me. She represents the lust for science, and is how I'd like to be, I actually work in artificial intelligence research and I love my work as much as she does.

2. Armored Trooper Votoms : I already enjoyed Blue Gender, Votoms was like a revelation to me. I could'nt stop watching that series, I always had to continue, I was scared, I knew the characters weren't immortal... and I was disappointed by The Heretic Saint oav. Crying or Very sad

3. Glass no Kamen : I read a lot of shoujo, and I think Glass no Kamen is definitely my favourite shoujo. I started with the old anime series (1984) and couldn't stop watching the episodes, when I finished the 23 episodes, I just needed more Glass no Kamen, I read all the 42 volumes in 2 days Laughing and I'm still waiting for the 43rd one.
I'll begin Swan this year, I hope it's as good as Glass no Kamen.

I guess I'll try to go from best to worst for anime I started watching during this year. I saw a ton of new stuff because I basically started this year.

Fansub series
Good (no bad, these are my only 4 fansub series ever)
1) Claymore - I loved this series. I think I watched nearly episode at least 3 times. I had my family and a friend regularly watching it every week the episodes were new. Despite some faults I really think this was my favorite series of the year.
2) Clannad - this is my first visual novel series, which I am surprised I liked. I liked it so much in fact that I'm definitely going to purchase Kanon at the end of this week. The characters, humor, touching/sad moments were all great.
3) Rental Magica - I really like this show, despite being a little formulaic I am really hoping for a US release. It has a lot of unique (for me anyway) magical elements and lore to it that I find interesting. The latest Christmas episode, despite having no real action was still interesting due to this. I also like the character designs/art and opening sequence very much.
4) Gundam 00 - Probably the most visually impressive show of the 4, but it does lean towards some of the problems of other Gundam series in having some extremely overpowered suits and overplayed anti-war themes. Sadly, despite the serious themes they rarely actually discuss the philosophy of these things. I still find the character development, politics of the factions, and battles interesting to watch though.

Official DVDs below (assume I'm watching the dubs on the below, as I'm a general dub fan)
Good:
1) Death Note - I've only seen through episode 10, but I already own the first 2 volumes and this is just such an excellent and well done show. The battle between L & Light has been very interesting thus far.
2) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - if I were rating this on the first 2 volumes (all I've seen of Death Note) I'd have put this series higher than the above. I was addicted from the moment I saw the trailer. This was my first Best Buy purchase when I started looking for anime as I was running down on volumes of Fate/Stay Night (at the time I was only purchasing that and Gundam Seed Destiny).
3) Fate/Stay Night - this was the first show I started purchasing from Volume 1 on a recommendation based on fansubs. I never watched fansubs myself previous to Claymore, but thanks to my sister (who is 14) I started buying this when it came out and I don't regret that at all.
4) Gunslinger Girl - this is a really great show. I look forward to a continuation of the storyline. I was impressed with the execution of the concept.
5) Solty Rei - I wasn't 100% sure about getting this from trailers, but I just had to try 1 volume of it. I was not disappointed.
6) Full Metal Panic TSR - this was good, but had some points (mainly the 3rd volume) which were a bit slow to watch through and hard to wait for. The ending turned things around very well for me, and the opening of TSR was completely solid. All in all I was happy, but I think I liked the original FMP and Fumoffu a bit more.
7) Shakugan No Shana - my 2nd Geneon purchase, I am very happy with it as well. The villains in the series are a bit zany, but I can forgive this due to what I found to be an involving story with some interesting plot elements and characters.
8) Tsubasa - this was a good show, but in the middle as it could occasionally be a bit "sappy."
9) Haibane Renmei - This was the first show I bought based on reviews, etc. when I was looking around. I wasn't completely disappointed with it but I found that I generally prefer the other types of series. That said, I enjoyed it and would recommend it for those not into shonen who are looking for something more light and peaceful with a good redeeming story to it. I may like this one better on a 2nd viewing.
10) Black Cat - decent but fairly typical shonen series. I wouldn't recommend to non-anime fans as a way to draw them in but I think it has it's good points. I like Sven, and I think Chris Patton makes a good villain Smile

Mixed/Uncertain:
The Third - I've watched 1 volume and hated the narrator but liked the show enough. I actually bought 2 more volumes but haven't watched them. It's strange but once I started buying anime I developed this desire not to finish everything that I never had when I was just watching on TV or downloading. This series was affected by that.
Scrapped Princess - I got stuck and still need to finish. I think I'll like it more but when I bought this there was also so much else I had and I ended up seeing that more than this show, so I haven't got around to seeing the rest of it to make a solid decision. I'm pretty sure I'll give it a good rating in the end. I know I liked what I saw when I saw it the first time.
Hell Girl - I am still a bit on the fence with this one, but having seen the 6th episode (1st on 2nd volume) I think it's looking a little better slowly. I marathoned the 1st volume as I normally do and it just had this real repetitive feel to it. With time I think I'll come to like it in small pieces.
Mushi-shi - I bought this one based on reviews. The one thing I can say is that it's beautifully animated and extremely cool looking. This said, the first volume didn't draw me in instantly to a story (I guess I'm more story-focused) so I haven't watched the other 3 I've purchased yet. One reason for that is that my sister had little interest in the show, and I tend to watch much anime with her or my brother. I still have high hopes for it in going forward but I don't think I'll be as devoted to it as some are.

Bad:
Silent Mobius. Picked this up for cheap due to having seen parts of it on Anime Unleashed. Found it not to be very good this time around Razz I may watch through it at some point but it wasn't really drawing me in. The fact the visual style is more rough due to being older didn't help there.
Shonen Onmyouji - I may change my mind on a sub viewing, but the dub was just so annoying I still can't watch it even after months. It was seriously that horrifyingly bad for me, and being a dub fan I am generally pretty forgiving.[/u]

For this I'll be sticking to Japan releases and I'll be including Fall 06 shows that continued into 07 as well as excluding Fall 07 shows that are going into 08 (not that any 24+ eps series I've seen that started in Fall 07 would brake into this top 10 anyway.... oh wait maybe Ghost Hound). Adding TGWLT because it's DVD was released in 07 for R2.

1. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Charming is one word to use to talk about this modern day masterpiece. I had high expectations going in to watch this and it not only matched them but surpassed them to make this my favorite animated movie of all time. I really loved how the J-Drama voice actors used throughout made the characters sound like high school kids as opposed to anime characters. Also the animation was just outstanding. 10/10

2. Baccano!

Baccano! is one crazy roller coaster ride, the director mashed 4 light novels into this series and had them time jumping back and forth between them. So we had multiple plots taking place over multiple time frames and had multiple conclusions all climaxing at the same time. Just a brilliant tv series and I highly recommend it to anyone, word of mouth is spreading and this is climbing through the the top anime ranks on this site and others like it. 10/10

3. Nodame Cantabile

I just love the interaction between Chiaki and Nodame, this series was very funny early on and was great during the later stages too when the drama element was turned up. Loved the classical music throughout, especially Nodame's very fast paced Choppin pieces. 9.5/10

4. Gurren Lagann

Epic, over the top, insane fun, Gurren Lagann was just an awesome experience and a massive return to form for Studio Gainax. 9.5/10

5. Code Geass

Like Gurren Lagann if I had to objectively rate this show I doubt it would get higher than a 7 but the enjoyment factor of both shows is just too much. Lelouche was a more interesting main character than usual and I really enjoyed the comedy aspects and the very nicely aniamted fluid mecha battles (11 comes to mind), what a cliffhanger though... 9/10

6. Seirei no Moribito

I still have 2 episodes to watch so this has some room to move up depending on how good the conclusion is. Anyway fantastic series from Production I.G with a cast of older characters and the best animation I've seen in a tv series (need to see Macross Frontier keep up it's level before I hand that title over to it). If people want to watch a strong female character in action than look no further than Balsa. 9/10

7. Death Note

Yes the second arc was weaker but the first arc was just brilliant and is strong enough to get it this far up my list in what I felt was a very strong year. 9/10

8. Terra e

Terra e is an underrated/overlooked gem of a show that if I had to describe in one word would be just "epic". The two main characters of the show are just wonderfully developed over the generation this show spans. Also some very tension filled episodes, especially 19, 21 and 22. 9/10

9. Kanon 2006

Clannad might end up being the superior show which is better produced in most aspects but I'm just not enjoying it as much as I did Kanon at this stage. Maybe I'm suffering from watching these two shows in too soon a period so Clannad feels like it's just retreading ground covered by past Key shows. 9/10

10. ef - a tale of memories

I still have 2 episodes to go to complete this so it does have potential to go up a spot or two or even fall out fo this top 10. Anyway SHAFT have really impressed me during ef, their production touches I find brilliant and I was very impressed by the ending scenes for episode 7 and 10. 9/10

Some random "awards".

Best ending of 2007 - Baccano!

Funniest anime of 2007 - Nodame Cantabile

Best music in a 2007 anime - Gurren Lagann

Best animation of 2007 - 5 Centimeters per Second (Movie), Seirei no Moribito (TV Series)

Best character designs of 2007 - Baccano!

Best first episode - Macross Frontier

Best pacing and direction - Baccano!

Best:

Byousoku 5 cm
It was beautiful and great anime about first love of two people and it was interesting to see it from others point of view. The animation was amazing it is worth watching in order to see at least this beautiful background

Nodame Cantabile
I find relationship between Chiaki and Nodame and their character development very interesting it was funny to watch and even if it used still frames in performance scenes I don't mind.

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo
it was good, at first I didn't think I will be enjoy this so much.

Seirei no Moribito
that was one of the best fantasy anime I have watched it is as good as Juuni Kokki and Balsa is one of the best strong female character.

Most Disappointing:

Romeo × Juliet Started good but in the middel become so dull that I didn't want to even finish it

Shakugan no Shana Second TV I didn't even like the first series too much and the second was even bigger let down

up-and-coming series:

Shion no Oh for me it is the best series of the fall season however admittedly most of series of the fall season are harems that I hate and the only action anime is Gundam 00 that I read is like Gundam Wing 2007.

Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations The first episode showed how much better Tsubasa would have been if it hadn't been for Bee Train. Tokyo Revelations was better paced and has this Clampish atmosphere that tv series didn't have.

You'd be surprised maybe; Myself; Yourself, KimiKiss, and ef - a tale of memories all turned out to be decidedly non-harem. They're all still high school romance/dramas, of course (which may not be your cup of tea), but not typical harem fare at all. I'm enjoying them.

Agreed about Shion no Oh; I'm liking that one a lot.

Man, no love for Dennou Coil? I'm not really up on fansubs (I have far too many licensed series to catch up on), but this was probably the most original anime I've seen in a long time, plus the technical aspects (animation, character design, soundtrack) were excellent. It started out as just a bunch of kids playing games, then turned into what almost felt like a really dark Miyazaki film. This anime definately deserves a spot near the top on any list of best anime to come out in 2007.

No worries Murasakisuishou, from what I've seen about the series it looks like one that will get a nod from me when it comes out here. As it is though I don't really view fansubs much so I haven't actually seen it yet myself. When it gets released here though I'm certainly going to give it a shot.

The best thing I watched this year was Kyo Kara Maoh! It really grabbed me and kept me interested. I realize it's not a groundbreaking series, but for a series to keep me interested this long is quite a feat.

Worst was Innocent Venus. It was just plain uninteresting. It was an anime club watch, and I about fell asleep during it. I didn't retain much memory of it, since I was so bored with it.

This won't necessarily be the final order when I compose my "Top 10 'New To Me' Anime of 2007" list in the Rotten Tomatoes anime subforum (where I'm Kiyone), but here are five series I liked.

1) Lucky Star: Because I like dry, character-based slice of life daily activity vignette comedies with cute girls that are light on overarching stories and big events, and, on that level, this was the best series I've seen since Ichigo Mashimaro.

2) Minami-ke: Because I like dry, character-based slice of life daily activity vignette comedies with cute girls that are light on overarching stories and big events, and, on that level, this was the best series I've seen since Lucky Star.

3) Kamichu!: More moé slice of life, but this time with an ordinary girl who becomes extraordinary and yet who doesn't let her newly-found divine status get to her head. It's a perfect blend of mundane and fantastical elements with some intelligence, spoiler[such as dealing with the issue of whether a Shinto goddess should participate in Christmas activities], that almost seems like something Studio Ghibli would put out if they had any desire to create short-length moé series.

4) Sketchbook ~Full Colors~: Yet more moé slice of life, but with an added element of mono no aware (awareness of the transience of things) that reminds me very much of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, with a slow-paced, calming atmosphere when the girls are drawing in nature.

5) Kodomo no Jikan: I'm fully aware that this show is not everyone's cup of tea, and I did indeed start watching it primarily because of the controversy, but once I got past the shock value of the ribaldry (and I fully understand that some people will never be able to look past that), I found a surprisingly rich and moving story of dysfunction and lost. And, yes, I also enjoy it as a moé slice of life comedy.

I didn't see anything last year that I could put on a "worst" list. I can usually tell at a glance whether or not I'd enjoy a series, and didn't bother watching anything that wasn't "my bag".

Anime I bought in 2007:

Super Gals! episodes 27-52
Kamichu!
Gunbuster
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Ah My Goddess: Flights of Fancy
Slayers (thinkpack re-release)
and random volumes from the final two seasons of Ranma ½ purchased from the bargain bins of Wal-Mart and Zellers.

Except for Kamichu!, which I was introduced to at my anime club starting in January, all those anime I had seen prior to the start of 2007 and won't qualify for my final list, which won't be out for a while because I'm too busy doing crayon drawings of cool cars for a crayon art show in February for me to do full write-ups for each show.

This year I started grabbing first episodes of any new fansubbed series that I could find, since I'd often find myself going months with nothing to watch otherwise. I ended up finding a ton of stuff that struck my fancy.

My favorite Japanese premieres this year:

Nodame Cantabile - the perfect mix of comedy and drama, with a great soundtrack and really endearing characters. Also a romance that didn't irritate me (I'm not usually a big fan of romance shows).

Lucky Star - I'm not usually a moe fan but I really enjoyed the comedic aspects of the show. The animation quality was far above what would have been expected for this type of show, also.

Claymore - In spite of the weak ending, I really enjoyed this show for its atmosphere and characters. The animation was on the high end and I thought it was cool to have so many kick-butt females all in one place.

Mononoke - I'm a big fan of the horror-story genre, and this show's unique look and great writing really kept me anticipating each episode.

Dennou Coil - after finally finishing this series, I consider it the top of my list for this year. The animation and its incorporation of CG elements was the best I've seen in a series in a long while, and the story fell into place at just the right pace.

Bokurano - This show fell under the radar a bit, I think, but it's one of the few "giant robot" shows that I've enjoyed. It's more of a drama that happens to have a giant robot in it. Each character is interesting and gets his/her time in the limelight.

Stuff I haven't seen all of or isn't all out yet:

Hayate no Gotoku - not a lot of depth, but it's a fun diversion with likable characters and lots of otaku-aimed humor.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - Wacky harem-esque dark comedy with a unique visual look. Enjoyable if you like extremely Japanese humor blended with the occasional slapstick or absurdist comedy elements.

Baccano! - So many story threads and characters operating at once, it's definitely something that could stand up to multiple viewings. The animation is nice to look at and it blends the comedy and drama well.

Seirei no Moribito - I'm sad I haven't seen more episodes of this, but I stopped watching once I realized it was licensed... now I believe it's in licensing limbo. I could tell right away that a lot of effort went into its production, and I really liked Balsa, the main character.

Moyashimon - Gotta love the little microbes! Seriously though, I like the show just as much for its scientific aspects as I do for the cute little CG microbes.

Ghost Hound - So far it's been a good mix of psychology, the supernatural, and a mystery story. I'm interested to see where this one goes.

Kaiji - I was a big fan of Akagi, but I think I'm going to end up liking this one even more. The main character is a bit more realistic and each episode adds to the intensity of the show. It might look a little odd, but I've been loving it so far.

I won't go into any anime I disliked since stuff like that tends to start arguments or lead to hurt feelings.

Just to put something in here that no-one has mentioned yet, I liked School Days. I've not seen anything like it before, and even though it was hilariously melodramatic, some of the situations and feelings it portrayed were amazingly realistic. It was very good for that alone.
