I am looking for shoujo that is under recognized. Can you suggest any?

Like mentioned in the most recent RIGHT TURN ONLY!!, Sugar Sugar Rune is a very under-appreciated shoujo series. I believe there are seven volumes -- meaning one left to go! As for myself, I've previewed it before and want to pick this series up as soon as possible. Although I know many dislike the art, I think it is very pretty.
![]() Edit: Just thought of another. Backstage Prince is really good and almost never discussed anywhere I've seen. I've only read a few chapters via Shojo Beat, but it seems like a series that will turn into something even more worthwhile. I don't know if it is under recognized but certainly isn't in stock at most book stores. I like Tenshi Ja Nai! with the final volume, number 8, coming out on 9/18/07.
Also there's Broken Angels. But to side note that some people love it others hate it. It has pretty art, a confusing plot line, and an extremely complex panel layout. I know this one isn't under recognized, but if you like high school stuff Gatcha Gacha is cute. (Not original or ground breaking mind you but fun). I don't know if that helped? |

Broken Angels is (I'm pretty sure) a seinen title, not shoujo. Confusing is a good way to describe it. I only read the first volume and never had an interest in continuing it. Skip Beat is a fun shoujo title and I don't hear it mentioned much. It's about a girl who is betrayed by the guy she likes and sacrificed everything for. He's a pretty famous actor so she decides to get revenge by becoming an actress herself and becoming more famous than him and/or destroying his career. It gets a bit more complicated than that but that's the basic premise. It's a pretty fun title and I highly recommend it. Unlike most stories about girls becoming pop idols and whatnot, she's not particularly talented, doesn't have any supernatural help, and 7 volumes in, her only steady gig involves a giant chicken suit and she only has a couple other little things on her resume. She's going nowhere fast. |

Yay, Backstage Prince. I love that series.
I've also read Sugar Sugar Rune... But the others seem interesting... |

Some series that I haven't heard much about from other readers, yet have read myself would be ones like: Special A. I really like this series how spoiler[it brings in the main character, who like Haruhi from Ouran, is a commoner going to a really rich school, and trying to keep up in academics. Thing about this character is she is ranked number two in her grade, and has been constantly trying to beat the number one rank, who has a crush on her.] It gets funny from there.
Another series I see not talked about a lot is Missile Happy! Though I'm beginning to think about the reasons why it wouldn't be that big of a hit in the first place. It's more of a series that was a test run for the author, and like some first series from certain authors, they don't sky rocket out in public. |

Probably Bride of Deimos. It didn't seem to catch on here as well as "From Eroica...", even though it has better art than it.

Sometimes English titles can kill, I suppose. |

There are TONS of "unrecognized" shoujo titles out there. Could you be more specific, like what you've read and which one(s) you like? |

umm... If I did that, it would be a huge list, but here are some of the "unknown" ones I've read. Recipe For Gertrude, Penguin Revolution, Backstage Prince, Happy Hustle High, Punch!, Wild Act, Kitchen Princess, Beauty Pop, Crossroad, Tenshi Ja Nai!...Those are pretty much all of them...You can tell the trend, can't you... And the series you guys are talking about is From Eroica With Love, Isn't it? From CMX? |

The best way would be setting up a My Manga list and making it public. Yours is not.
Hmm, to me they are pretty normal, standard shoujo titles. I'm afraid that I can't see any specific trend from just ten titles (and I've only read two of them), although I would say that you like romance but not too lovey-dovey. Right now I can only suggest you to start with those which have been serialized in shoujo manga magazines: Hana to Yume, LaLa, Nakayoshi, and ShoComi (this one can be quite steamy though), with LaLa probably best fits your taste. A list with a hundred titles or more might help.
I can tell one thing though: judging from the title you've listed, I'd say you are pretty much a "regular" shoujo manga fan, and unless you are into BL stuff I wouldn't recommend From Eroica with Love to "regular" shoujo manga readers. |

Umm, most of those you see are pretty much invisible to the anime community. And I was asking for something out of te ordinary or something that is underrecognized, because there are many titles that have wonderful story and art, but aren't recognized. And as for From Eroica With Love, thanks for telling me! I'm not a boys love fan, myself. |

Right now, I'd say High School Debut, which is one of the best written and most clever shojo titles I've ever read. Of course Viz hasn't released it in the US yet, so hopefully it will catch on and sell well.
As for things that are available at this very moment, Sugar Sugar Rune is probably the most underrated shojo title out there. Anything from Moyoko Anno is always worth looking into, and her venture away from adult-oriented manga happens to be her most accessible (and perhaps enjoyable) effort I've read yet. Of course there's always the 49ers, who are pretty obscure despite their lofty status as pioneers. Keiko Takemiya's To Terra is a good read, but I'd say that your best choice for classic shojo is A, A' by Moto Hagio. You can probably find it on Amazon, and its a must have for shojo and sci-fi fans alike. |

I've seen a lot of High School Debut scanlations. Maybe I'll read a chapter to see if I like it. And I'll check out To Terra, as internet shopping is not for me. |
