And it better have a good story as well. My obvious Nr 1 choice is the original "Battle Angel Alita" series.

I gotta say Death Note. There was no error or awkward looking art, except for the random six-fingered lady. But maybe she was born that way.
And I loved the Shinigami. It would've been so easy to make them all bishounen or plain looking monsters you feel like you've seen a hundred times, but they each had very distinctive looks. |

Akira hasn't been put on here yet so I'll add it to the list. Otomo has some of the most amazingly detailed backgrounds I've seen, and the level of detail put into things like nerves and veins on his characters are just awesome. One of the, if not the, most beautiful works ever made.

I'd would be hard to decide an OVERALL best. everyone has a personal best.
My personal best would have to be anything from Arina Tanemura (I think thats how you spell her name) When I read the story Eve's applework, a short of hers...wow! Just WOW! the anime adaptation of her work pales in comparison to her manga. She is pure concentrated shojo! A close second of mine is Dramacon's art from Svetlana Chimakova. The art really set the standard in OEL. |

I absolutely love Kentaro Miura's artwork in Berserk. The backgrounds, the characters and especially the demons are lush and great to look at. It's one of the many reasons Berserk's my favorite manga title.

I have always loved Watase Yuu's art and no more than in Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden. It's definitely the best art she's ever produced in black and white (her colour stuff has always been gorgeous, though it definitely has also improved over the years).

She has been hospitalized several times due to severe tendinitis of her wrist. That's the price for being the #1 manga-ka of Ribon. |

I would like to second this. Like many, when I buy anime, I give priority to content first, then artwork (and/or animation quality) second. But I happen to be someone who gives priority to artwork first when buying manga. Although Watase's artwork is definitely distinctive, I personally don't think it's great. But when I flipped through vol. 1 of FY Genbu Kaiden a long time ago, I definitely liked what I saw and ended up reading all of it in the bookstore. The improved quality of her artwork there showed me what's so special about Watase's distinctive style of artwork. I forgot about Genbu Kaiden since then, but this comment reminded me of what I thought about it during the time I first read it. So I will be probably be collecting Genbu Kaiden, although not soon since I have more than enough manga series I'm following right now. Hopefully I won't forget. Recent manga that I started collecting because I was attracted to their artwork first are xxxholic and (most recently) Air Gear. Among the three series that CLAMP are currently working on (Tsubasa, xxxholic, Legal Drug), the artwork quality in xxxholic seems to me to be the best. (Legal Drug though is currenly on hiatus.) xxxholic is also great content-wise. I'm currently still reading Air Gear v. 1. It doesn't seem to have a 'deep'-story to tell, and it doesn't pretend to do so. Rather, it is a shounen series that aims to present a story that is just fun and entertaining. It achieves this aim effectively because of its excellent artwork. The artwork makes an otherwise typical action sequence exciting to follow. The fan service is great and the depiction of characters doing cool poses are not annoying but rather very fun to see. |

My favorite manga artist is Kentaro Miura and his manga Berserk. Although I would have to say that Kouta Hirano Hirano (Hellsing), Takehikou Inoue (Vagabond), Hirokai Samura (Blade of the Immortal) and Yukito Kishiro (Battle Angel Alita) are just as good. And I've always like Yasahirow Nightow's (Trigun Maximum) style as well.

Even if you do forget at first, it will be awhile until the series is done, since it's ongoing in Japan right now and only coming out with about 2 volumes a year. We have 5 volumes in English now and finally there is a release date for the 6th, though it's some time from now (for some reason Feb 2008 is what comes to mind, but I don't know if that's right). |

If I'm voting for the most technical artwork then would have to go for Gantz, because there really isn't anything that can surpass that, with it's wonderful mix between CG and handdrawn artwork.
However if I'm to vote for best looking artwork then it's a close call between 2 fantastic Korean manga (manhwa) Unbalance x Unbalance ...and Shin Angyo Onshi |

Personally I love Yuki Kaori's art. Especially in the later volumes of Angel Sanctuary and Godchild. Everything is just so detailed and beautiful!

I really have to agree on this one. I love her artwork, and her story lines too. Kamakaze Kaito Jeanne was amazing, and I feel that most of her works are held to that same high standard. I also like Naoko Takeuchi's artwork very much. I would say that I am bias being a huge Sailor Moon fan, but I love her other works too. Miss Rain and Chocolate Christmas were artisticly beautiful too. Lastly I would say I like the art of Yu Aida's Gunslinger Girl. It is detailed and has the nice balance of innocence and violence to it. The story is fantastic too. |

I stopped reading after volume 3 or 4, because I don't feel like waiting 9+ months between volumes. When its finished (I'm guessing sometime around 2012) and I have the whole thing, then I'll read it. |
