Makes me so freakin angry... Viz has been so obsessive compulsive about Death Note. They have never been so strident against fansubbers. Sheesh. And they do it when the show's finale is almost here. Capitalism bites sometimes.

I have enjoyed Death Note, but I ABSOLUTELY-IT-WILL-BE-A-COLD-DAY-IN-HELL before I EVER download and pay for any multimedia content that requires me to use Windows Media Player and is saddled with DRM. Hell, one of the first things I get rid of with an XP install is Windows Media Player. Take away the WMP and DRM requirements and I might be interested.

This is disappointing as I planned on buying the DVD's as they are released to complement my fansubs. I hope Viz doesn't dump the DVD's for this ridiculous marketing scheme, otherwise, I may just send Death Note to ye recycle bin. There are other anime to watch after all.

I agree. This is ridiculous.

I have no idea why Viz doesn't just release this show to DVD. They have the license, they want to release the show, but I have no idea why they're doing this god-awful method of releasing the show instead of just putting it to DVD.

I guarentee you no one is going to buy this, because it's basically going to be identical to a fansub, except it costs money. And I doubt anyone will pay for that It won't have any of the extras that DVDs have either.

I really hope this fails, and I really hope that Viz, or anyone else, doesn't do this again.

Well, it's certainly within Viz's right to send those C&D letters, but it's not like it's done them much good in terms of actually stopping Death Note fansubs.

EDIT: Whoa, ironwarrior returns.

They do this the day after the last episode... very nice timing Viz. Rolling Eyes

They should've done this while the fansubs were still in the early episodes.. then maybe I'd buy the legal downloads.. but the show's about to end.. so, a little too late there.

BTW, LOL, it has DRM!!! No way in hell I'm buying something with DRM.. it's a piece of crap.

As others have said, I'll pay for downloads when they're offered without DRM. Not until then.

Although I don't have as much animosity as others, I prefer my anime on DVD or simular hardcopy. And since they have it, I think they should start working on a standard release pronto.

they should have started earlier to combat piracy more effectively.
starting now just raises hype and encourages new fansubbers. maybe the hype is worth it.

^5, Zalis Smile

I may not post much (I get too agitated at some posts and have to little time), but ANN has been bookmarked for years.

This news release got me a bit riled up since I've been following Death Note religiously (even through what I consider dull filler). I'm religiously pro-fansub and use them as a marker for what anime I collect on DVD and would even be willing to pay extra for upscaled HD-DVD (I have a 61" HD TV).

What I consider an affront is being forced to play ANYTHING through WMP, a veritable piece of Microshaft trash. Add in DRM and I'm frothing at the mouth. I generally acquire what I want in multimedia from Usenet, which usually has DRM stripped out or if I have the time, I'll strip it myself. IMO, there is NO CONTENT, anime, music or anything else, that I cannot live without that I need to be saddled with some absurd copy-protection scheme that will do little to change end-use perceptions and only burden consumers.

Simply put, produce a good product and make it easily accessible across multiple platforms without DRM, and I'm willing to spend. Do the opposite, and I'll find something else.

So they aren't going to put this on dvd?
What the hell are they thinking? I'd be so pissed if they don't- i made myself avoid the fansubs because i knew someone would get this- and what do I get?
More fansubs that cost money?

Did they think that because some watch fansubs if they offered it to download for money people would buy like crazy? it doesn't work that way.

I too prefer a hard copy of my anime and I want a whole bunch of goodies in the boxset. That is if I ever get one. Rolling Eyes

Yeah they better do a DVD....I missed the subs for this so I could rent it. Sad Not download it off of a crappy website that forces WMP.

Sounds like a nice big "fudge you" to Mac users for download stuff. I would actually consider purchasing this sort of thing if they had released it in a more timely fashion (until they can get close to matching fansubbers speed-wise, I don't think legitimate anime downloads are going to catch on any time soon) and if it weren't for this insane level of DRM crap (and compatibility limited to propriatary Microsoft programs). If someone wants to steal it they're not going to bother stealing the official copies, they're just going to turn to fansubs. Sacrificing end-user experience/rights to protect copyrights just ends up with a serious loss in sales and turning more people to piracy since there will always be someone somewhere who can crack the protection and once one person cracks it (or gets around it by going to other sources, as in the case of fansubs) it doesn't take long to distro it to the whole of the internet.

I don't know.... I find it pretty funny myself. Unethical Fansubbers and greedy fans get the shaft. It was licensed a good while ago, and subs should of been long gone anyways. Fansubs have gotten way too corrupt for my taste, and it's nice to see someone give them a good poke.

Nothing wrong with that.

And Capitalism gets me cheap, shiny anime DVD's! [and to a lesser extent, dirt cheap used anime vhs]. And it helps fund the production of MORE anime..... pretty much everything Gonzo makes is funded in part by a US production company, which is why everything they make gets licensed in large chunks. And how they keep making such high end shows Anime smile

YAY CAPITALISM AND RESPECT FOR CREATOR RIGHTS!

Well, of course we're going to get a DVD release. And a TV broadcas if they can manage it. The downloads are just them offering a legitimate way to get the show while they work on that, and to experiment with ways to get future shows to fans faster [and thus circumvent the fansubbers- in an ideal world, fansubbing wouldn't be needed because companies would license everything, and release it here ASAP. Just think of this as a step to that world :) ]
