So it's early in the game with me having just watched the first five episodes of Witch Hunter Robin HOWEVER--
Usually the first few episodes of a show set its tone. I have not seen much anime compared to many here, but all the anime I have seen include at least one or two moments of comic relief. So far I am liking the series but it's definitely a new experience because there is zero, and I mean ZERO relief. Even shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion have comic relief.

You are correct. I have seen all of WHR, and it is one of my favourites, but I cant seem to recall any comic relief.
I actually liked this about the show, its a much more serious approach to the story.

Thank god for that too, I mean there has to be at least one show where there is no comedy in it. WHR is a good show and it did it without any comedy, go for gold.

Heh, try watching the anime Eruanna's avatar is from and WHR will seem like a delightful stroll in the park in comparison.

There really isn't any comic relief per say but it anyone is going to be called "comic relief" in the story, I would have to say that it would be slacker girl Dojima. Dojima and Shunji Nagira (if that's who Westlo is referring to as to having the pimp jacket) are about as close to comic relief as you're going to get in this story.
No comic relief is almost refreshing, isn't it?

WHR isn't a favorite of mine, but lack of comic relief wasn't one of the problems I had with it. I think it simply wasn't that kind of story.
Comic relief can work one of two ways. It can make you like the characters more so that your heart is ripped out even more when the dramatic scenes come, or it can ruin momentum and quite possibly lessen the power of a story if it's used inappropriately. There are one or two series that might have been favorites of mine but killed the mood for me when slapstick was added at inappropriate times. I don't think comic relief should be added just for it's own sake if it doesn't flow naturally.

Not going to sugar coat this, WHR is pretty dark. There really isn't any comedy and as far as I am concerned that is fine with me. I really don't do comedy anime I am more of live action type when it comes to my comedy relief.

Yeah, not all anime have comedy relief. A good way to check is looking at the Encyclopedia entries. The genre listings and plot summary alone should be enough to tell you.
But personally, I'm glad WHR lacks it. I like a nice, dark series every now and then: WHR, Ergo Proxy, Gankutsuou, or Monster. Lack of comedy just means a higher amount of something else (usually action, drama, violence, plot or a combination of the four).

Comic relief tends to ruin a series for me. I noticed almost all of the popular shounen (especially Jump) series tend to have these visual gags. I remember thinking City Hunter was cool when it first was aired, but quickly lost interest when it just turned into a string of mokori jokes. Likewise the tone of Ranma's first dozen episodes leaned a bit more towards drama but soon digressed into big water fights and Yatsura styled wackiness. The worst for me was Fullmetal Alchemist, since I really do like the series, whenever a really intense and dramatic scene is punctuated by an SD Edward complaining about his height or something similar. Witch Hunter Robin along with GITS, Ergo Proxy, Berserk etc.are just fine without these gags in my book.
I don't mind series like Wolf's Rain (the old geezer wolf near the underground passage was really funny) or Planetes (pretty much a drama/comedy) which have a few "cute" scenes that make you smile, or even chuckle. I just really dislike it when there are giant sweat beads on a super deformed version of the characters head. I suppose that would be my definition of comic relief which I find in many series based off of manga aimed towards a younger audience.

While I have nothing against series that lack comedy, Witch Hunter Robin ended up being incredibly monotonous and repetitive for me as a result. A huge chunk of its episodes fell into the trite "Monster of the Week" cliche, and when a show does that, I really find it difficult to take it seriously, which is why I'd actually expect a bit of comedy. I can appreciate a dark, serious show, but not when its formula is so predictable and banal. I'm sorry, but when my mind starts making comparisons to Power Rangers or something, any effort that the show tries to maintain its seriousness will just fall on deaf ears and blind eyes.

While I'm all for comic relief and it does add to some series, even serious or darker ones, at times it is certainly not required and in some cases could have a negative impact like too much fanservice. I look at my favorites and notice that the bulk of them lack comic relief with the exception of Haibane Renmei which has comic relief moments but they're still in short supply. It just doesn't fit in most darker themed or serious anime, although Chrono Crusade did a good job of fitting it in as did FMA, so it can be done.

I completely agree, I watched all of Witch Hunter Robin and it really did nothing for me. The Monster-of-the-Week stuff especially tends to get old really fast, unless there is something really different about each monster, which in this case I found there wasn't.
I don't know if comic relief would have made it better in my eyes, though I doubt it, since half the time I tend to find comic relief to be stupid comedy. But it could have helped. The main thing WHR lacked for me was any character that I actually remotely cared about.
