They're proper nouns, ie names, so yes you cna put capital letters.
This Poll is stupid. |

No, they are borrowings. They were borrowed into Japanese, manga from english magazine, and anime from a French word of the same spelling, but likely different pronounciation. Through American interest in Japanese animation, they have been borrowed back into English. Grammatically and linguistically speaking (although Cookie is better qualified to comment on this), they are regular nouns and thus do not warrant capitalization by English convetions.

I'm really impressed by the number of people that have chosen to go with proper grammer, I think it really says something about the people who visit the site (or at least those willing to take part in the poll).
Also the word manga is original to Japan and not derived from the word magazine. It was created by the artist Hokusai Katsushika in 1815 by combining the words "man" and "ga" which, acording to this site could be translated as "whimsical picture". As for the root of the word anime, that's still under debate I believe. Emerje |

Blast! That's what I get for going on apocryphal memory for facts (I swear I read that somewhere). Oh well, deuce it, manga always seemed like an awfully odd borrowing of magazine anyway. It's not as if that couldn't be taken into Japanese mostly intact (ma-ga-zi-n). Actually, I meant to note the debatable derivation of anime, but I forgot. Not a good night for me then. Eh?
Nonetheless, my point essentially stands. Last edited by Delthayre on Wed Sep 03, 2003 12:16 am; edited 1 time in total |

You've had better nights, but yes, you're right on the main point. You don't capitalize cartoon or comic, so why should anime and manga be any different. Emerje |

They're not proper nouns. If my username was Anime instead of Cassandra, then it would be a proper noun. |

You're missing an apostrophe there, chief.
And typing in all capitals is considered rude. Save them for emphasis, chief. |

Nouns, in general, do not warrant capitalization. When discussing the President of the USA, we capitalize President to specify the current president. By capitalizing President we're referring to GW Bush, not Clinton or any other past president.
If we use the term "president of the USA" we're referring to the position that multiple people have held. Regan and Clinton were both presidents, but neither is the current President. In the sentence "I really like Anime" we would need to (grammatically) define some existant unique concept or object that is "Anime". You might, for instance, be able to say "I like pictures drawn in the Anime style", or "It is Anime storylines that interest me the most." if you're referring to some commonly-agreed definition of what "Anime" is. I said "No", but not because of the grammaticality issue... Personally, I simply don't like using capital letters. :) |

I think that the English language needs to be modified so that everything is lower case - its faster to type it that way.

Eh, I have bad habits I picked up in Germany where every noun is captialized. It is more fun that way.

Oy, did they suddenly start making shift keys out of uranium?
For my part, I can't type without capitals, it's instictive to me. |

No way should they be capitalized! I hate when people capitalize words that shouldn't be! Yucky.
(Yeah, I know, this is my first post. There should have been a post in the intro thingummy but it usually doesn't work for me, so I just jumped right in. Sorry!) |
