Surprisingly (at least to me) out of the :::::pauses to count fingers:::::: five new fall anime that I’ve tried thus far, this was the one I found myself liking without reservations, and it’s not a genre that crops up on my seasonal anime check list. Y’know, action anime, check, romance anime, check, isekai, check, slice of life, check, horror, check, magical girl…huh? How’d that get on there?
But instead of being annoyingly predictable and cutesy, I thought this anime was surprisingly offbeat and funny. I suppose you could argue that it’s just a non-ecchi version of that anime about a school girl who became a villain just so she could spank Magic Girls, but I find it much more entertaining. The art is cute…cute buildings, cute animals, vibrant colors with oddly orange-staired escalators or lime green mall columns…but it’s not distractingly cute. And I found the blond villain, Kuroma? consistently quirky and fun. I thought the idea of him being aspoiler[ masochist who’s strictly into being a villain so that he can get beaten up] was pretty amusing, and I thought the way he confidently oscillates between being devious and incompetent, or between being a grandiose braggart and a pathetic beggar was…I don’t know…energetic? The voice actor does a great job humorously transitioning from speechifying to boasting to groveling. Along those same lines, I thought the battle where Berry Blossom was actually the one destroying all of the property (at the bridge battle) was funny too. I thought this anime was light and amusing. It is its own thing, IMHO, and fun and easy on the attention span. |

Okay, so I liked episode 1 & 2, but episode 3 made me wonder if that enjoyment is going to be sustainable. I didn't enjoy watching Chizuko go full drooling stalker as much. Over on the Blue Box thread, I wrote that my biggest complaint was seeing the MC portrayed as a crush that had arms and legs drawn on it. I sort of have the same complaint here. I thought Chizuko had more of a personality in the first two episodes - if nothing else, we got to see her monochrome existence before she felt like Berry Blossom brought color into Chizuko's life, and her sparring with Kurumo was a lot more involved and entertaining. Here, I pretty much felt like Chizuko was obsessed fan full time, and the only two modes were drooling and not drooling.
