Holy macaroni! 800 million was my most optimistic prediction, but at this point the film may reach $1 billion in no time if it continues to hold steady at the box office.
The movie will be released in South Korea and Japan in a couple of days. Don't know how it'll perform in S.Korea, I'm more interested how it'll do in Japan. Unlike Sonic, who despite being created in Japan was never very popular there, Mario does enjoy popularity in his home country and many of his games have sold millions of units each, but it remains to be seen if that popularity carries over to the movie. Despicable Me 3 is Illumination's highest grossing movie in Japan at $66 million, which is a respectable number, and last year's Minions the Rise of Gru grossed $33 million. Illumination is one of the few animation studios that does decent numbers in Japan, only Disney and Pixar seem to do well there.
Just recently, Shigeru Miyamoto talked about how the movie has been changed for it's Japanese premiere, like how some dialogue has been adapted for Japanese audiences. Still, I'm not sure how well the movie is going to do in Japan

Kirin: It'll probably do better than Saint Seiya, which had the misfortune to open that same weekend...

For you sub purists, you'd hate to hear this:

"Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed with GameSpot that the Japanese version of The Super Mario Bros. Movie has a different script than the Western release. The Super Mario Bros. Movie's Japanese script isn't quite a direct translation."

Quote:
"Since we were creating this movie in both Japan and the United States, we thought we should make a Japanese version as well," he said. "When we decided to make this movie, we discussed creating a unique Japanese script from the beginning. Even if we were shown an English script, it would be hard to understand the subtle nuances."
