Obviously that was not the case.

Of course it was, that's why they didn't have a kiss, wedding, or any form of intimacy between them. They obviously were trying to play both sides of the "the fiancé thing was a schtick" and "the fiancé thing is legitimate" for marketing reasons.

This seems right in line with how they've always treated their relationship and all other same sex pairings. It's as eye rolling as the after the fact nonsense they pulled with Kudelia and Atra. I'm still shocked that they actually allowed Yamagi's feelings for Shino to be explicitly presented on screen in IBO.

You can just tell us that you didn't watch the final episode or read the first half of this article. Not really a lot of wiggle room with Eri calling Miorine her sister-in-law, unless you think Miorine had a secret brother we never heard about or saw and that's who Suletta married.

Really.
Really, Bandai? You get a massive shot in the arm to the Gundam franchise and not only do you kill it off in half the time of a normal Gundam series, but you're going full lesbian erasure on it? Like, to placate who?
This is stupid.

I figured this was going to be the case in the end. This is why In the talkback thread for the finale you saw a number of people disappointed there was no confirmation with anything like a kiss or a wedding in the final episode. It was telling they were going to leave it open ended and up to interpretation. And people will still hail this as one of the best "yuri" anime of all time and ignore the actual yuri titles out there that are dedicated to the romance. Machikado Mazoku had more yuri than this did.

With
- rings on ring fingers
- mention of “sister in law”
I think it’s downright obvious what the answer is
Japan never does 100% in your face obvious but I think that was more than enough. ( some people obviously wanted a wedding scene / kiss) but that’s now how it rolls in Japan
In a country where same sex marriage is still not a thing to have this on a Sunday night prime time tea time viewing ( 5:30pm) was exceptionally brave of the creative team. Any more in your face would have caused an outcry
( As a straight married person ) for them to backtrack now is pretty weak - they should stand by their convictions and acknowledge it. The reaction has been brutal.

According to the Word of God, that's a completely valid interpretation it would seem. Or perhaps one could think they were joking?

I can think of many anime and manga that are quite 100% in your face obvious with romance - same-sex or otherwise. There's no real excuse to be wishy-washy unless it was intentional. Kira and Flay had very obvious sex, to the surprise of many, back in the early 2000s

There’s nothing to “interpret”. This couple couldn’t be any gayer if they were named Gay Gayerson and Les Bian. Many things in Gundam are ambiguous, open for interpretation. This relationship isn’t one of those things.
Stop being cowards, Bandai.

The point here is Sunday teatime 5:00pm broadcast
Sure lots of stuff had in your fave same sex representation but this was Sunday night families at home prime time viewing
Japan is still very conservative about same sex relationships - people are taking the government to court over it
So to have something like this even if muted / indirectly is very brave ( before they backtracked…. )

You'd expect this sort of 'playing both sides' noncommittal bs from executives & marketing goons that only view art through the lens of financial & engagement numbers, but what's really wild here that that GWitches became the biggest Gundam property in decades because it purposefully decided on a bold new vision, where the staff detailed their intent visually and textually multiple times.
This is the very thing that made your show a success; why allow it to be created if you don't have the stones to stand by & embrace what made it so. You're just spitting on both the creative staff & the fandom otherwise.
It's cowardly corpo bs that will likely only backfire on them in the long run.
