At least he's just a translator, someone who can be fairly easily replaced, not an author or artist. So the translation can keep going and a predator is in custody. Win-win. Last edited by TheOtakuX on Sat Jan 02, 2021 8:20 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Since I've already seen some confusion about this on Twitter - no, this man has nothing to do with the production of the product itself (Jujutsu Kaisen), thank the Lord, only its translation. Now it's a matter of rather Viz will swap out the translator for the volumes he already did to avoid any such connection in the next print run or just leave them be.
Unfortunately, I compared the Manga Plus version of chapter 1 to Viz's and it's a 99.9% match. Last edited by CatSword on Sat Jan 02, 2021 7:08 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Did he also make the Manga Plus translation?
Anyway, damn, I only read "Jujutsu Kaisen" and "Child Pornography" and I almost lost it and thought it was related to the author...at least it has nothing to do directly with the manga's production, but yeah, it's a f***ed up situation nevertheless… |

I'd say leave it be. Translators aren't big names or anything (it's not like they're credited on the cover), and it doesn't seem like it'd be worth it to pay someone to redo the work that was already done. Replace any work he's done that hasn't gone to print, sure, but leave what's been done alone. Though I haven't read this series so I don't know how much would need to be redone anyway. |

They key here is not the possession, it's the distribution charge. Simply possession child porn is bad enough and will get you major time here in the US, but distribution amps that up to a whole different level. I fully expect in the coming months whatever attorney he gets to try and make some sort of a deal.

They'll probably just leave it be. Gerard Jones was also arrested for possession of child porn several years ago, but Viz still use his script in reprints of the Dragon Ball manga. |

It would pretty dumb, unnecessary and redundant to ask to recall the volumes since the translation work it's already been done. Dude will pay for his crimes since he wasn't in Japan where he just gest a slap on the wrist, but asking to cancel the manga because is tangentially related to the guy is just asking too much for its own sake. |

No one has asked for this though? They'll just replace him, so I'm not really worried about it. Back in the day, translators could/would add their own flourishes to translations, but I think nowadays it's a much more "A=A, B=B, etc" type of thing, especially when there's better communication between the English and Japanese companies(asking clarification for certain meanings, names, etc). |

I was talking to someone about this on Twitter, and Jam Mitsuko Cash (a professional JP-ENG translator) brought up this good point:
While Jujutsu Kaisen could theoretically still be relatively plausible due to it being an on-going effort, especially if the new translator offers to go back & re-translate the prior 122 chapters done by the felon, it'd still require more than just simply re-translating. Doing so for Dragon Ball, which is 42 volumes long & has 519 chapters to it, is likely way too expensive (& resource heavy) a task for Viz to take on, as the money that would go toward hiring a brand new translator, editor, letterer, & who knows what else for that one series to no longer have the pure continued stink of Gerard Jones following it around (it'd still be a small waft, though, due to the old books still existing) could instead go towards (I'm sure) literally multiple other manga. Not saying that it shouldn't happen, as Jones' choices in naming clashes heavily with what's since become standardized over more than a decade, but I just think it's highly unlikely at this point, sadly. |

And where did the article mention anything of that sort? Has anyone even said that? Please don't start a strawman argument that no one is making. Did cleanup already. Anyone coming in to do the "he's not been proven guilty, court of public opinion" schtick can see themselves right out the door. He was flat our arrested for possession, not suspicion of possession or anything similar. So save that child porn apologia rhetoric for another place. |

its pretty pointless too, since he was not going to get any royalties regardless.

Don't worry, you aren't giving him any money. Translators get a flat fee for their work, they aren't given royalties; they get the same amount of money no matter how much the book sells. Whatever money he was going to make for the existing volumes was paid to him already. And he sure as heck won't be translating any future volumes. |

Yes, but the Chris Handley thing from like 2009 or whatever shows that it's not a 0% chance. I feel like the Chris Handley thing will call into question all of these sorts of cases in the community from now on, it was that big and we didn't realize it. I don't believe the ICAC was involved in Handley's case (quick search says the ICAC started in 1998), but I don't think it matters, the well has been poisoned. |
