Easily agree with almost everything said here (including Karamatsu being best boy, come at me ). The only thing I wanted to point out is that while I liked “ESP Kitty” and all, that is not the most sincere episode of the show. That award easily goes to “Jyushimatsu Falls in Love”.
This was a very sincere episode, and they did it without any sense of irony either; they didn’t even have a punchline at the end like “ESP Kitty” did. In fact, while I really enjoyed this show before, this episode was what launched it into greatness for me. The fact that it can handle drama as well as comedy is wonderful, but now it’s become really tough to find an anime comedy that can match up to this. |

Keep meaning to get back into Osomatsu. I lost interest when they pulled episode 1 & 3(?) since they were my favorites thus far & so I assumed the bits of the show I liked weren't going to continue.

I watched the first episode of S1 and though it was funny, but then I watched episode 2 (the first real episode if you want) and despite getting every joke I didn't laugh once, the joke were landing, just with no punch for me. Is it just a show were its recognize that it has a weak start and it gets better?

It’s possible. I’ve enjoyed the show all the way through, but in hindsight, it doesn’t start hitting its stride until episode 5 at the earliest. In fact, from what I’ve seen, a lot of people didn’t really start enjoying the show until they were able to tell the brothers apart with no trouble. That’s when it starts becoming more character-driven, which is what kept me hooked. So if you gave it another shot, it could be possible you could enjoy it. Unless you don’t like comedies about terrible people; in which case, you probably shouldn’t come back to it. |

Yeah, I had a similar experience. Someone kept telling me it was good, though, so I kept watching. Around episode 8 I was finally able to tell the characters apart, and that's when I got hooked. As for best boy...Chibita's the real MVP (unfortunately, I can't choose between my sons ). |

I was enjoying the zany of the show and the lighthearted atmosphere and the n"Jyushimatsu Falls In Love" and the show jumped to a whole other level for me and made Jyushimatsu my favorite brother. You are 100% it did the touching and feelings so impressively without sacrificing tone or character. Truly the stand out for me as well. |

Ichimatsu's my best boy, not because he's a cat, but because at least he gets you when it comes to insecurity and being antisocial.
I was the same in that episode 1 was my favourite too (humour-wise, both "Jyuushimatsu Falls in Love" and "ESP Kitty" were great drama-wise), but the Fury Road parody and the Mario Kart parody mentioned in the article hit that same sweet spot for me. |

I probably should binge watch this. I love gross out humor.

Good article that hits on pretty much every reason why this show is so great and beloved. There's been some good anime comedies this decade, but yeah, I'd wager that none of them are able to stand up to or match the sheer variety of the whole package on display in this show. The mention of It's Always Sunny is pretty apt, a good comparison (the 'real life' comedic misadventures of 4-5 shit people, some related, and the people around them / the real and surreal comedic animated misadventures of 6 shit brothers and the people around them), and a good name to drop that helps when explaining the show to someone who may not be an anime fan.
Also, regarding the show's ability to poke fun at itself: a defining moment, at least for me, on that front, is the one skit in a particular season 1 (second cour) ep where each of the brothers' very characters/character traits are sharply attacked and criticized. It was painful, but so delicious at the same time, and more shows, east or west, could use the rare cast in-show ripping-into, especially when they're as deserving of it as the -matsus are. With the show's quality, and with season 2 currently being like the show never left, Viz's announcement of a dub for the show is my single most highly anticipated ever right now. If they can Handle It Right (and honestly, there's a higher chance of them doing that than most other licensors these days), it could be downright legendary, creating a multitude of new fans on this side of the world.
Thirding this, and seconded on the matter of it making the Juice my favorite brother. Even have a nice plush of him on my bag that's followed me around on trips for year and a half now. Wish I could get his Nendo, though. |
