Just saw it. Definitely worth the price of admission if its in your area. For those who can't see it, spend the ticket money on the bluray/dvd.

I sympathise with you, Emerje. I have been granted plenty of opportunities to see this film, but declined them all due to my general apprehensions towards attending the cinema. Your case is the precise opposite, sadly. |

I saw it today as well and quite liked it. A visual treat with a good story to boot. The showing I saw was the dubbed version which is fine because I wanted to concentrate on the artwork and I'll be buying the film at some point anyway, so I'll get a chance to hear the Japanese audio. It was very encouraging to hear at the box office that the screenings are sold out for the next three days. I hope exhibitors get the message that people will come to see anime films.

Already watched the movie twice in airplane. I'm not into dubbed anime, so I'll wait until subtitled version shows up.

Since I work at night I was really hoping they'd be doing a showing over the weekend and thank god my local theater is - bought my tickets a few nights ago and was surprised to see most of the seats were still available. Not sure about now, though.
I'll be taking my younger sister with me, and I'm really excited to finally see why it's become so big. |

I was able to see the movie tonight, and enjoyed it. It feels like Makoto Shinkai has really polished his skills over the years, as the movie is very well-paced, atmospheric and consistently engaging.
spoiler[ I was reminded of Groundhog Day and Serendipity, mixed with a little Back to the Future too. There were maybe a few missteps for me --- the opening "intro" threw me off, and made it feel like I was watching an anime episode at first, which was odd (I also felt the same whenever vocal songs played throughout the movie). Some of the character designs felt a bit too "anime" (if that makes any sense) for a production of this level, but I was able to overlook it as the film went on. Various character motivations and reactions also seemed a bit questionable, and forced me to suspend my belief at times. There were also certain aspects of the movie that felt unresolved for me, that might have helped give the film a better sense of closure by the end.] Otherwise spoken though, it was an enjoyable film, and I can certainly see why it became such a sensation, though it's perhaps not quite as "revolutionary" as you might expect from all the buzz it's received. It seems to maybe have been a bit more like a popular fad, but all the same, a pleasant and worthwhile one. |

For anyone who saw this dubbed, how was the voice acting and script? A local theater near me is showing both versions, but for a very visual movie I'm not sure if watching it with subs would detract from the visuals.

Well, online, the Frisco TX theater listed this morning's first showing as dubbed, then two afternoon subbed showings, then dubs the rest of the evening. I normally prefer subbed, but chose the early morning dubbed showing in case it was so good that I would rebuy and watch the 2:00pm subtitled. It started as dubbed, but about 10 people out of 40 total immediately got up and walked out, (later to find out to complain). Seems the theater's print ads and box office sign had the showing advertised as subbed. 30 minutes into it, the lights came up, an employee apologized and they said they would restart the movie from the beginning, subbed, and the audience applauded. Clearly, the vast majority of the people were expecting subtitled. About a minute later the movie restarted, but again was dubbed, and was stopped after 30 seconds, another minute and it was finally restarted subtitled. Comparing the first 30 minutes either way, it really was no contest, the dub was good, but the original just was much better. There were only a few very minor deviations I noticed. Both sub and dub lead male voice actors did have some issues with what they were tasked with, but it got better and was soon not an issue. It was good, but I may have seen my last movie in a theater, the audience is too distracting, and the technical issues colored my experience. I expect when I watch it at home I will get a LOT more out of it. As I left the theater, an employee was handing out free movie vouchers for the inconvenience. I hope for Funimation's and the films sake that the problems with the showing I went to was not a common occurrence. |
