I tend to sway a little more to Ranma because I think it is just cooler.

Two different gernes for the most part, what's the point in comparing them?
I mean, you've got a romantic comedy which has some definete directionality, where a love triangle is formed. In this case, the male protagonist is indecisive about who he really wants to be with, and that plays the major role in moving the story forward.
The latter is a more of an action/comedy story with a few romantic aspects to it, and little directionality. True, we have an indecisve male protagonist, but that is really where the similarities end. Ranma's biggest desires consistently are the want to be removed of his curse, and to be the greatest martial artist on the face of the earth. He's cocky and arrogant. Kyosuke is a bit insecure and is obvious about his desire not to hurt anybody in the process. On the otherhand, Ranma's desires seem to be more regulated to the desire to just have everything just go away.
To explain my view a bit more, consider this: For as long as the manga ran, how much character development have we had really? Granted, there are a few plot devices entered into the mix, but the changes in the characters are so few that they are negligible. When a timespan appears that should be at least two years to move a half step from point A to point B? At best, you have the famous Takahashi love "shape" going on here. It's meant to be wacky and not go anywhere. There is no real end to the manga, and the anime version just died out somewhere.
It's not to say that I dislike Ranma. I thoroughly enjoyed the comedy aspects of it and every once it awhile, I like to put some in for a few laughs. But unlike KOR, I can't take it seriously. With KOR, the humor in the indecisiveness is almost always there, if nothing else, sitting in the background. With Ranma, although he is indecisive, it constantly takes a backseat, completely obscured by the mayhem going on.
As such, I can't see much point in making a comparison between the two because one has too little in common with the other.

I tend to think things that KOR is very romantic while Ranma 1/2 is just classic Takahashi. A lot of slapstick humor mixed with a cute little romance. I'll just say the the role that romance plays in KOR is a lot more important than the one it plays in Ranma 1/2. No one can say that that's not true.
I can't choose between them. I don't think there's a real way to compare them. They both stand as good animes in their respective genres.

KOR for the overall anime experience, while Ranma had a great first season, it peters out. The Ranma manga gets damn good further on.

I was wondering which one I should read between the two. I haven't read either yet, and it's so hard to decide From the descriptions I read, they both seem to be in the romance/comedy area.

They are. I think it all depends on the level of romance you want. If you're like more romance, go for KOR. If you like more comedy, go for Ranma 1/2. I'd watch/read both because they are both very good.

Hands down KOR! KORs characters displayed a huge range of human emotions and conflicts. Many of these conflicts helped shape and define the characters and enabled many viewers to relate and appreciate them. I know for myself I could relate and sympathize with Hikarus character. The entire tv series, OVAs and two movies have a smooth and methodical progression towards a future for each of the primary characters.
The same cannot be stated about Ranma, the animated version was disappointing IMO. The manga left matters unresolved just like Urusei Yatsura, things just did not come to a head. The only times they did was during a major crisis, reference the five UY movies.
Overall IMO Ranma pales in comparison to KOR, partly because after awhile it became obvious Ranma would encounter a fighter lose horribly, he would then learn a new move, fight and win. Repeat ad nauseum, until the series end. The characters were not developed in Ranma as well as in KOR, mainly because in Ranma there were so freaking many characters.
IMO if you are serious about either series, look into KOR first, as it is easier to follow and has a conclusion that is not left for inference. I recommend watching the tv series, the OVAs, finish the tv series, then the movies.
Google KOR and you will find sites that tell you the specific episode order to watch for optimal understanding.
