I'm somewhat surprised. I thought it would be split into two cour with the other half airing this Fall. Then again, if it airs July then that means on more show for the Summer.

So I'm guessing Space Dandy is doing well in Japan?

I know for sure it does great in America. It's always at the millions mark of viewers, and it trends on Twitter every time it airs. Personally, I really enjoy the show. It has its good and bad episodes, but the good ones definitely outshine the bad ones. You might get a bad episode one week, but the next one can be incredible. I wouldn't mind a second season, more Dandy isn't a bad thing.

I bet it's more like they planned a split cour ahead of time.

Nothing else to watch at that hour TBH. Really a waste of talent IMO

^That's most likely the reason. Based on stalker data Space Dandy is going to be a flop in Japan. http://www.someanithing.com/?p=1013

This has been suspected for awhile but it's nice to see an official confirmation!

I'm really quite liking this show, I definitely think its better than Cowboy Bebop, but it's not my favorite BONES show... As mentioned above, some episodes are fantastic, others not so much. But its always a delight to watch! I enjoy watching the series with my roommate and another friend on my floor. However with the second half airing in the summer, it will be hard for us all to get together to watch it...

Told ya, rederoin.

I'm just glad that there's still more episodes to be made. I honestly wish that Adelie would be a permanent part of Dandy's crew starting Season 2. :/

It helps that some of the production costs are already paid for by Cartoon Network and Funimation, so they can more quickly move to the next phase.

Though I doubt Adult Swim will simulcast this one. Summer is a low time in TV ratings - that's why they do more reruns during summer. Adult Swim may prefer to hold off debuting something they're more invested with till the more lucrative Fall season. People who've already been watching it in English will mostly keep watching it in English (even if they watch a subtitled simulcast, they'll re-watch it again in English - they're already hooked).

YYYYEEEEEESSSS!!!

I freaking love Space Dandy! I'm so excited for the second part coming this summer! Though if I'm right, this was meant to be a twenty-six episode series all along. Whatever. MORE DANDY FOR ALL OF US!!!!

I highly doubt that , where did you get information that they were helping with the production costs?

If they're getting the privilege of "simulcast" (actually even before Japan), then they're paying for that privilege one way or another.

To be more specific:

  • Jason DeMarco @Clarknova
    Atlanta
Co-creator/Exec Producer of Toonami. A&R, Williams Street Records. Creative Director/Vice President, Adult Swim On-Air
    https://twitter.com/Clarknova1

Will Space Dandy be "Co-produced by Cartoon Network/Adult Swim" like The Big O, or will it be considered a Toonami original like IGPX, since it airs here first? Or neither?

It's more like GITS. We are co-funding but not actively producing it.

I'm curious as to what the Japanese otaku think about an anime airing in another country before it airs in Japan... I think that even the more casual fans would find it odd that an anime is airing first somewhere else, and 2nd in Japan.

This is purely speculation, but a negative, wide-spread opinion about this could lead to Space Dandy bombing hard in Japan. And if it does that, the future beyond the 2nd cour is looking grim.
