Hey, do you know how it is that 'Yuki is born the year of the rat?' and 'Kyo is born the year of the cat?' they were born the same year, but they're different animals. same with Momijj and and the cow guy. (currently forgot his name)
do you know what i'm trying to say?

1) There is no "Year of the Cat"; that's the idea of the Cat being left out of the banquet.
2) Momiji and Hatsuharu are in the same school year, but that doesn't mean they were born the same year. Maybe one was born in November, and one was born in March.
3) Even if they were born in the same calendar year, they could be different zodiac animals--if you read the "Year of the ****" profiles in any volume of the FB manga, it says that the Chinese New Year is celebrated in late January or early February; it doesn't conform to the Western calendar. So even having birthdays in January and April would put them in different zodiac years.

but Ayame, Shigure and the Doctor guy (the name has escaped me) were all in the same school year, but all three are different zodiac animal spirits. also, Tohru is a dog, which means that Kyo and Yuki would have been born in the year of the dog, or the year right before it.
the Zodiac of the Sohma family do not have to be born in the year of his/her particular animal. it is the spirit of that animal that makes them that animal. it's like a cycle of reincarnation
Hatsuharu is the cow guy BTW

I don't think it really has to do with the year they were born in, in the case of the Sohma family, it's whenever the spirit will reincarnate. In volume 21 of the manga, Shigure explained his thoughts for the reason the curse is starting to fall apart, which is that all 13 spirits have come together for the "last gathering". In past times, somebody from the zodiac would always be missing, meaning not be born, reincarnate, however you want to call it.

The animals they're posessed by have nothing to do with their Zodiac sign. It has to do with whether all of the animals were incarnated at the time of their birth. If an animal was waiting for reincarnation, then they were out of luck.
The difference during the Fruits Basket period is that it's extremely unusual, if not unprecedented, that all of the reincarnations are so relatively close in age. We're never told how or why that happened. Were the younger previous reincarnations killed in a car crash or other common disaster as the older members passed away, leading to the close ages of the current group? The issue is never brought up.
