I got this off the Lupin ML, courtesy of Luis Cruz:

Q: I know you're a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki. Is the Fiat 500 named Luigi a reference to Miyazaki-san's film ("The Castle of Cagliostro")?

A: No, it's not a reference to it, though I love "Lupin the 3rd: Castle of Cagliostro." I love that film. But his movies mean so much to me, he's a filmmaker and he's great.

It's interesting that anime's become more mainstream in Hollywood, with everyone from Lasseter to Cameron to Vince Vaughn ready to cash in on it, even if some directors still refuse to acknowledge their influences. I'd never imagine journalists discussing it casually in the past, unless they worked for independent magazines, but the internet's broken the barriers between elite and "maverick" reporters that any media can be discussed equally. Anime still hasn't been entirely embraced as a respectable form of entertainment, but it's being accepted, which I'd never imagine ten years ago.

Wow, it's all that subtle, eh? Not being very up to date on what's happening in Hollywood these days, I'm surpised to hear this, yet a bit embarrassed at the same time because I'd love to actually witness this kind of "growing acceptance" through my own observations of these people of higher influence (at least compared to your average "Joe anime" fan like me). But like I said, I'm a bit of a slug when comes to the outside world Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop. I suppose it's just one of those deals where it'll work out slowly, but surley.

What with the Hollywood adaptation of Monster, all the hoopla about live action Eva, DBZ, and Sailor Moon, and growing popularity of all those Ghibli films, I'm glad there's at least something positive in corrleation to anime (aside from that teacher that recently got arressted, but that's another story).

In Lasseter's case, it's pretty well-known in animation circles that he's a Miyazaki fan.

After all, he provided the on-disc introductions to some of Buena Vista's R1 DVD releases of Ghibli movies.
