Hello;
I'm a fan of the works of Hayao Miyazaki. I've collected several of the Japanese Region 2 DVD's of his films. I'm also a video producer. I use the production monitor in my editing setup to watch these DVD's because it has a switch for showing 16:9 DVD widescreen. I recently got the Region 1 Castle in the Sky. At the end of the business day, I popped it into the DVD player... ...and was shocked to see annoyingly visible animated white specks in most of the scenes. This crud is barely visible in the Region 2 Japanese version of Castle in the Sky (Tenkuu no Shiro Rapyuta). In fact, I'd never noticed the dirt before, until the Region 1 disk showed me where to look. I put together a website on the differences in images quakity of these two versions of Castle. With the help of a friend, there's some more information on differences in image quality for Kiki's Delivery Service/Majo no Takkyubin and for Spirited Away/Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. Sorry, the website has some MONSTER pages. We couldn't use a lossy image file format like .jpg -- we had to go with .png You'll see exactly what we found, but each picture is around a half meg... Here is the URL: http://www.wjsavage.com/web/R1DVD/comparisons_of_studio_ghibli_r1.htm Here's the URL for a QuickTime movie that clearly shows the differences in quality between the R1 and R2 Castle in the Sky. You'll have to download the movie from this page. It's about 5 Megabytes. http://www.wjsavage.com/web/R1DVD/dirt_movie.htm |

You deffinatly put a lot of work into that site and you certainly know what you're talking about, but I've got to say you get what you pay for. The japanese DVD's run around $40 while you can get the US DVDs for under $30, often under $20. I agree that there was less effort put into cleaning specs and artifacts from frames, but with the lower price there's bound to be less effort put into the final product.

that's still unacceptible. i mean this is a from a big name company, it's not like it came from a bootlegger or some no name company.i don't think it's wrong to expect to pay for quality products from a well known distributor. |

Personally I'm just glad that we're getting R1 Ghibli dvds. We got a red-tint free Spirited Away, and the picture quality on Kiki and Castle isn't as good as it should've been, but at least we got a R1 release.

The picture quality seems fine to me,Im not saying its perfect but I didn't notice any faults while watching.I agree with Louie-Kun its nice to see ghibli DVDs coming out,nots not to say I dont want quality DVDs but I feel Disney has done a good enough job thus far.

Like I said in the opening of the website, I, too, am glad that Disney is finally releasing Ghibli titles in the R1 market. But being privy to some of the behind-the-scenes stuff that happens in post-production, I saw a cheap lowest-bidder job in what they put out. If you're going to turn the EE control up to '11', you have to run some noise reduction on the program first, 'cause the EE's gonna' magnify every flaw. If you think your audience won't notice or won't care, you skip the noise reduction step. The contractors that authored these disks for WED, Inc., did just enough to meet the specs of the contract, and the suits were happy with it. (It could have been an in-house job. But I'd be very surprised to find that out.) They could have done better. Without raising the price of the disks. |

Boy, you've been busy. The forums over at Anime Jump got the same message.
Anyway. It is interesting, thanks, but I stick by what I said on the AJ forums: "I appreciate what Disney has done with their Ghibli DVDs, and to lambast them for specks of dirt and some artifacting just seems picky." |

Alright I just checked out the website. There is a bit of a difference, but it's not as bad as VideoDude is making it out to be. A few dust specks here and there is not something to cry about.

I've looked though your site... lets comment on this:
Laputa: The R1 release is worse depending on the way you look at things. I'm suprised you didn't notice or comment on this being a "video producer". The R1 shot looks a lot sharper than the R2, which is probebly why the dirt shows up. Depending on how bad it'l look in motion (judgeing from the .mov on your page it does look pretty bad) I'd say the R1 could look better depending on eqipment and stuff... allthouh the dirt does look terrible. Kiki: Again the R1 looks a little sharper, thats why the see the artifacting. The cropping the the R1 DVD is pretty stupid though :/ Spirtied Away: I dont know what to say about this one... the R2 looks quite a bit better, but I've seen the red tint from a few other shots and it does look pretty bad.. the addition of a Japanese DTS track to the R2 is also very nice (die space wasteing dubs) Over all though it seems like the R2 DVDs have faired very well. I think I'd prefer to pick them up insted of the R1s if I can get hold of them cheeply here in the sunny old UK... |
