Is it possible to fully enjoy the first Urusei Yatsura movie even if you haven't watched any of the series or any other Urusei Yatsura productions?

Is it out on DVD yet? I know that AnimEigo was dubbing Only You (the first UY film), but I didn't think it was close to being ready.

Beautiful Dreamer's the second film and it's been out a long time, because it is the only UY film released by Central Park Media/U.S. Manga Corps. That one can be enjoyed somewhat without having seen the series, but it helps that you know who all the characters are... I'm hoping for a new Region 1 release with the Mamoru Oshii director's commentary from the Region 2 disk as well as the original closing credits sequence.

UY: Beautiful Dreamer's my favourite anime film...

Its out in the UK but I just checked amazon and its not listed so its ovbiously not out in the US.Strange that a DVD is out in the UK but not the US seeing as we have a very limited selection.Thankfully Im from the UK and can pick it up in a special deal for £1.99,about $3.00 I think. You can get it for that price from http://www.anime-on-line.com but Im not sure what the shipping fees are.

Oh you mean on VHS? Yeha, they have all the Urusei Yatsura movies and OVAs out on VHS in North America, but they are loooooonnnnnnnggggg out of print, and, even when they were being produced, they were extremely hard to find unless you ordered them direct from AnimEigo.

The 1st movie is a good movie to watch if your just started watching it. Movie 2 and 3 are okay, but they show characters that don't pop up until after Ep. 60. You can still find them, but it's not that easy. Your best bets are on-line stores. I'm pretty sure AnimEigo still sells them, but it's been a while since I drop by their site. Any hoot, AnimEigo found it's Lum and Ataru for Movie 1 and now they got to fill in the "smaller" roles.

That is very strange... I know MVM is the legit distributor of AnimEigo's stuff for the UK, so I don't think it's a bootleg. I guess their license with Kitty Films/Shogakukan permits them to release UY stuff on DVD in Britain even if AnimEigo hasn't released it on DVD in North America yet. But I guess it doesn't have the dub...

I'm pretty sure that MVM still is the distributor, but from what AnimEigo is saying, they can only ship to Canada and US. It might be only for VHSs. It might as well on be for subtitled verison seeing as how the only verison of UY that aired on TV was a dubbed verision. Hmmm.

No, I mean MVM sublicensed UY from AnimEigo for the British market... I saw a handful of British licensed UY TV tapes in Britian at Forbidden Planet in London several years back, and they had both the AnimEigo and the MVM logos...

I thought it was a chain of stores over there. Any hoot, MVM doesn't carry any of AnimEigo's UY DVDs, so I guess it's only for the VHS.

Its defiantly legit as I have seen it in big chain stores like HMV.One reliable UK DVD online store has it listed as a dub but Im pretty sure its sub only as MVM and a couple of other sites I have checked dont mention a dub track.

I've just discovered that you dont have Gunbuster on DVD over there as well whereas we do.Once again we only have it on sub.Maybe US companys are reluctant to release sub only DVDs because the US anime market is growing and subs wont bring in enough bucks.Whereas the UK anime market is much smaller and companys can be assured that buyers in the UK will buy the DVD whether its got a DUB track or not as we dont have as large a range so cant be as picky.

Anyhow, back to the question about the first movie, Only You... it's also directed by Mamoru Oshii, but this one sticks a bit closer to the regular series than does Beautiful Dreamer. I believe the liner notes explain who the characters are a bit, but I don't know if it's a particularly good introduction to the series; it doesn't "standalone" as well as Beautiful Dreamer

animeigo links to mvm who links to anime-on-line...

and the release appears to be region-2 PAL coded... so it seems almost certain that it's legitimate. the sticker (although hard to read) is a triangle with a "U" in it, not the "A" of known bootleggers "Animation Video" and "Anime Cartoon". That Triangle with a "U" is found on several other products, and I found a number of UK DVDs with it on, too, on known reputable sites.

Therefore, yes, it's almost certainly legit.. but it does appear to be sub-only, if the other websites are accurate.

Man. For $3, i might just have to pick it up, even if I don't have PAL-playing capabilities.. ;)
