Comedy has always been one of my favourite genres in any TV show / movie and this applies twice as much to Anime. Something about the medium makes it ideal for comedic shows although it is one of the trickiest genres to pull of correctly. This is partly due to the fact that people's taste in comedy vary greatly from person to person and so it is very rare to have a comedy that everyone will like.

Personally i have always been a fan of sporadic comedies like excel saga, sayonara zetsubo sensie and recently maria+holic. There is something about the random craziness, bizarre and parodying nature of these shows which have me laughing for hours on end. That being said there are a lot of popular comedies i don't like such as slice of life comedies (k-on, lucky star) which never get more then a chuckle out of me because they came across as bieng to slow and the humor was too light.

So my question is what do people think makes a comedy good? what do you think separates good comedy from bad comedy? and what comedy anime you like/dislike and why?

Eee, I like your little 'explaination' [:
I agree... Although I only just started to get into anime, the funniest thing about the ones I've watched are the facial expressions, I'd say. Anime hyper

Chrono Crusuade has amazing humour [:
So yeah... e__e.

What makes a comedy good? A comedy that uses situations that are funny, not sex jokes every 2 minutes. I could give you a list of shows that do this, but i'm just going to say that if you're not like "Azumanga Daioh", it's not real comedy.

IMO, of course.

I love clever humor the most, personally, things like puns, rhymes, irony, the smart taking advantage of the stupid, satire, and parodies. Unfortunately some of those don't translate well across the cultural/language barrier. After that it would be absurdity like randomness and strange characters doing odd or impossible things. Sex jokes and other stupid humor are often funny but depend more on the characters involved and the situation, setting, etc. Some are a hit and some are a miss.

Some comedies I've enjoyed are Full Metal Panic: Fumofu, Excel Saga, Chobits, Natsu no Arashi, the Galaxy Angel series, B Gata H Kei, Great Teacher Onizuka, REC, Azumanga Daioh, and Soredemo Machi wa Mawattieru for example. However, I'm really not a big fan of comedy stuff and prefer to watch more serious entertainment unless I'm in the mood to laugh. So, I don't really go out and actively seek it out much.

I find great characters tend to have comedy come natural to them. Mitsudomoe is a prime example: all the characters are unique and memorable, and the interaction between each other are hilarious. Definitely one of my favorite comedies out there. Same thing with Ouran High School Host Club's characters.

Same thing even in non-comedy anime. Sai from Naruto seems to have comedy come natural to him, especially in the beginning form his misunderstanding of human emotion and doing things he reads in books. Or Full Metal Alchemist with the Xingese characters like Ling and May/her little panda. Or dare I say the way Katja sexually abuses Hana (it's okay, she secretly loves it) in Seikon no Qwaser, and Miyuri's over-done reactions to everything, Lizzy's cuteness, and Sasha's apathy. Character traits are an important part of comedy for me.

I think my favorite sort of comedies are those that are very character-driven, so dependent on the character's personalities themselves. Ouran is a great example of this, as well as Azumanga Daioh. I also like wacky parodies, so stuff like Excel Saga and (again) Ouran also really gets to me.

Dark comedies are my favorite but anime is severely lacking in good ones. Outside of SZS I wouldn't really put anything up against american cartoons like sqidbillies and athf. I enjoy good slice of life comedies like minamike, azumanga daioh, and lucky star though.

Comedy is my favourite genre, in that regard what I find best is characters missunderstanding, or they do something that shows stupidety, then with the added spices of parody and shocking. My favourites include Baka to Test, Inukami!, Hayate no Gotoku and Ika Musume, strangely my favourites often involve cross dressing of some sort hapening in the course of the show.

Well as a rule I often belive that comedy is just someone else's tragedy, so someone has to fail somehow, though there is also seeing something that doesn't belong there hapen such as a parody. But everyone's sense of comedy is different.

After hearing it reviewed in a recent AWO podcast, I started watching Gosenzosama Bonbonzai. It's a really dry type of situational humor. Different from any comedy today. I'm digging it so far.

Well, I watch (and read) a broad range of comedy "types," from pure slapstick, to in-joke comedies, to situational comedies, to parody/satire that has some great dialogue and occasionally sophisticated humor, and even more. I can get into an anime that uses any combination of these, provided it's done well.

However, when I'm dealing with anime specifically, I especially like series that use the medium itself to its own comedic advantage. Essentially, something that takes advantage of "anime physics" and creates a unique, even surreal type of humor because it's anime, and not any other medium. So, series like FLCL, Great Teacher Onizuka, and Tenchi Muyo and its spin-offs come to mind. Sudden SD animation, impossible physics, and some very over-the-top physical humor are all used to great effect.

I'm a huge fan of Azumanga Daioh, though, because it takes these sorts of "anime" elements and combines them with character-driven humor and some clever dialogue. It's still one of my favorites mainly because its comedy is very multi-layered, and a single joke can be funny on so many different levels.

Speacking of this I've had a very fickle relationship when it comes to eroge / harem comedies. I'm gonna say right away im not a big fan of ecchi comedies, but alot of comedy anime series these days seem to be going this route. I definetly find i have a "line in the sand" when it comes to eroge comedies where if it gets to ecchi I have to stop watching reggardless of how funny it can be. Recent shows like "Demon King Daimao" and "Kiss x Sis" (which became increasingly disturbing) definetly crossed that line for me and I stopped watching even though the comedy definetly made me laugh consistently. Anyone else feel this way about ecchi comedies or are you generally more tolerable of ecchi themes if the comedy is good?

I think I tolerate a bit more from comedy, but lately that tolerance has been pretty much worn thin. The issue seems to be that these ecchi/fanservice/*incest* shows are hiding behind a mask of comedy or parody, but it's not funny and not really a parody any more.

For a lot of these shows, at least to me, it seems that "comedy" is just the farce that the creator and viewer both agree to acknowledge for the sake of saving face.

Japanese humour and me can't seem to mingle. The only instances when I find anime funny are:

1.When Manga Entertainment dub them (e.g Devilman, all the swearing and terrible voice acting made me laugh so much and it wasn't even intentional.)

2. Akira - Akira was well written and Kaneda made me laugh hard, I guess because it wasn't very "generic" like most, and I also believe because he seemed so believable and human compared to most anime characters.

I find anime and attempts at humour not to go down well. Maybe it makes me chuckle a bit but I find the "randomness" and "craziness" coming off as trying too hard. I think the whole ecchi humour thing not funny at all, it's boring and too much to take in. I also hate it when they go all Chibi, it's not funny, just awkward and somewhat embarrassing to watch.

Or maybe it's my sense of humour, I sorta like random yet clever, or witty/ distasteful; and it seems no anime has any of that for me.

Same here. It's rare for me to find a anime I really enjoy that has a lot of humor in it. I don't mind it here and there but my tastes in comedy and what anime has to offer almost always fail for me.
