Pretty sure ya meant to say billion.
However, One Piece's 32 million volumes selling this year for an average 420 yen brings in 12 billion yen, almost 10 times as much as the K-ON merch sales;)

I'm guessing the reason OP got left out is because all those huge records it broke this year were from its manga format, not the anime. And Strong World, though it did break the record for opening weekend gross in Japan, came out late last year.
And K-on is big otaku news. But I feel I must mention the big difference between something incredibly mainstream popular like One Piece and something extremely otaku popular like K-On. Both have huge amounts of merchandise and displays and advertisements all over the place, and are super visible to the average person just walking around Tokyo (though of course OP much more so). The thing is, I've met literally countless people who love One Piece of all sorts of ages, and even the people who haven't read it always now what it is. Now, despite living in Japan for two years now I've never met a single person who's seen K-on (or at least who will admit to doing so). And when I see a K-on sign and point it out to someone, most people don't even know what it is (despite high visibility). So, it sells a lot. It's still really not mainstream. Not that anyone was implying it is.
Anywho, in my own personal world Kon Satoshi's death would be the biggest piece of news up there, followed by Arrietty (wonderful movie). But that's just me personally.

Upon looking back at the list, I'm pretty sure this was just an excuse to get more attention for the list-creator's "Yutori-chan" (which before this time I've honestly never even heard of).
