I've learned very interesting thing today- according to a friend of mine I'm not an anime fan. Far, far away my sister was putting together 3rd bookcase to make a place for our stuff, but for that person it didn't matter. I'm not a fan because I
-Don't watch everything that is fansubbed -Don't draw fanarts (my art teacher made me promise not to draw any more:)) -Wrote just one very short fan fiction -Don't go to every convention -Had never cosplayed since I was 8 -"Aren't serious about my hobby" ( I laugh at hardcore otaku, and sometimes say about "porn, violent Chinaese cartoons") For me a fan was always a person who claims himself to be one, but that discussion made me wonder about one point- I know that this person never bought anything legal. He claims himself as a anime fan for 10 years, and never bought even a magazine. No one DVD, no single volume of manga. I don't want to judge anyone, but it just isn't fair. M&A are now cheaper than ever before, even English or German ones are easy to get and relativity cheap. There are sales, many items can be bought from second hand and it really wouldn't ruin anyone to buy something from time to time. So how do you define a fan? Do you feel ones? |

Maybe in the way words evolve over time to mean something different "fan" went from "someone who enjoys something" to "someone who is over-the-top-obsessive" about something.
I thought I was a fan of the American burger chain Culvers, since I eat there once a week, but I don't have it for lunch and dinner 7 days a week and I don't dress in culvers attire, so I guess I'm not. |

A fan is someone that enjoys something and is enthusiastic about it. There are no pre-requisites or requirements other then watching anime and enjoying it.

Seems to me your friend's mixing up the definitions between "fan" and "otaku". Tell him to STFU. Seriously. A fan is anyone who spends a little time learning about anime. If you can name a few VAs, studios, directors, and other anime fare, you're a fan. If you watch and don't give a damn who key animators are but enjoy watching shows, you admire anime. If you don't give a damn about anime, you're Nick Levasseur. |

"Fan" is, strictly by Webster's, a slang abbreviation of "Fanatic".
The definition seems to have softened over the years, although some anime fans seem to be bringing back the classic version. (In my day, when you had to haunt comic-book cons to get your bootleg fix, and you'd shoot your best friend for a copy of Animag, it was the classic definition.) |

Whoa, Nelly! I could not disagree more. I know I'm one of, like, 2 people in the entire fandom who doesn't give a rat's ass about the Japanese side of anime, but my lack of caring doesn't suddenly make me an admirer instead of a fan. I agree with your previous part and I think EC's friend is a nincompoop for their mix up of otaku and fan, but I think the part I quoted needs to be scratched because even though I don't care about the Japanese-ness of anime, I do still love the entertainment part of anime immensely. |

Do you only watch dubs or something? Do you know the names of Dub VAs or dub publishers? Your attitude is just odd since you are on a site that is all about providing proper credit to the people, even Japanese, that worked on anime. Not know key animators is one thing but out and out stating you don't give a rat's ass about the Japanese side of anime is a ludicrous statement given the forum you are on. |

It seems to me that your friend is exhibiting classic signs of "anime elitism." It stems from a subconscious need to show off ones one personal beliefs as some kind of barometer for liking one thing over another. Your friend hears that you are an anime fan, and now they are threatened by someone else that takes their spot as being unique, so they have to display nerd cred to show you up. Mention cosplay? They've been doing it twice as long as you have. Write fanfics? They wrote more than the Library of Congress. Seen a show that is an obscure, hard to find title? They've seen stuff so obscure, they might as well just made up the title....which they probably did.
In all avenues of life, people feel the need to be better than the guy next to them, hence we get elitism. For me, there are really only two questions you need to answer two determine if you are a fan or not. 1.Have you seen anime before? If you answered yes, continue. If not, WHY ARE YOU EVEN HERE? 2. Do you want to see more? If yes, you are a fan. If not, try again later. And most importantly, don't worry about meeting someone's standard or being a fan. If you think you are, more than likely, you are. |

fan (2) (noun)
fan [ fan ] (fans) 1. enthusiastic admirer an enthusiastic admirer of a particular subject or activity 2. insecure snob an enthusiastic admirer of a particular subject or activity who feels he must build himself up by disparaging others who don’t quite conform to his standards as ‘not real fans’. I think he's saying he just watches it to be entertained and nothing more. |

Please, keep it civil!
I don't have problems with anime publishers in Poland and I know what to expect from every of them, but from Japan I recognize just a number of famous studios (Shaft, Gonzo, Sunrise), some mangakas, one or two directors and that's all. ATM I can't name any voice actor. But on the other hand I always look for prototype and inspirations. I'm one of those who have read Genji Monogatari and Journey to the West, because it could help me with understanding. Watching Ebichu I was looking for informations about things shown in that cartoon. Am I still "admirer"? |

He implied he does not care about the Japanese side of anime, I am asking for clarification to see if he equally does not care about the dub side.

I would say EireformContinent that your friend is not the fan, although you could always improve yourself in that matter.
What matters than is that fan is a self label but it comes with some duties that one must uphold. Priding oneself for not giving a dime to the industry that makes what you like a fan you are not, as that would be a failure of support. Convincing others not to buy and to show them were they can pirate goods instead of supporting legitimate streams and sites for viewing/purchasing is a failure of getting the word out. So they are doing more of a disservice than a service. Helps to understand me in that the philosophy I follow has a concept of duty. http://people.wku.edu/jan.garrett/ethics/kant.htm So for myself personally the criterion is to self label, be passionate about anime and to support those who will make the effort to bring anime to you in such a way that it continues. i.e. no to fansubs as they are not helping. |

I've never thought about "mission" or "supporting industry". Just claiming to be a fan without paying a dime for it is just a bit unfair.
