No way! I've actually been buying every issue since last May!
Bit of a shame, as I liked the magazine. Although I felt like they talked down to their audience at times (particularly with their letter responses).

That's a little sad as I pick up that magazine every now and then but the truth is that it's just unneeded these days. Whenever I flip through it's so I can chuckle at how old the news is, it's like a time-wrap to 1-2 years ago with all the stories they report on.

Just as a heads-up for anyone who feels like commenting on this article, I will absolutely not tolerate any unnecessary negativity or anyone being an ass about this. This thread is being watched like a hawk and I will happily ban you if you decide to be a jerk.

This is terrible
I've been collecting since the beginning and is my favorite anime magazine. If they end, there's nothing else really out there that is just as great. It will be missed.

I liked Anime Insider. I guess you can't say we didn't see something like this coming, but out of all the magazines I felt it was the easiest to read and most accessible. And that counts for a lot. It's a shame.
I agree printed periodicals have a tough time competing with the instantaneousness of the internet. A slumping in the paying fandom, due to multiple reasons, doesn't help either.

I agree, but I think that has to do with the fact that they are bound to what is licensed, so naturally they are going to be several years behind in what they talk about. It is hard to make a print magazine successful these days anyway. People just don't really read them, esp. in this case because most of the stuff is old news in the chew it up and spit it out world of anime fandom. People WERE interested in the series the magazine covers when they watched them fansubbed 2 years ago, but after they're licensed no one cares anymore. Its sad but true. It's good that official streaming is making the transition quicker lately. Hopefully there will be more revenue that way.

Sad to see anime mags go; I used to get so excited about buying them in the 90s, but these days every time I flip through one the news is ancient, the articles are uninteresting, and the featured shows are shows that came out years ago and have long since lost their buzz. New mags need to realize the power of the internet and provide something that can't be found online for free. The only English-language anime mag that I thought had new content worth paying for was NewtypeUSA, which I still miss...

Son of a ... this sucks!! I was JUST thinking about ordering a subscription to this! Booo!
This was my favorite anime magazine ... are there ANY good ones left??? Blah.
The "already licensed" issue wouldn't BE an issue if people weren't more interested in pirating than buying. Poo. Even if something is "old" (i.e. you downloaded it a year or two ago), it's still neat to read about it ... especially from the American release perspective.

Wow, so like, what's left? Otaku USA and parts of Play Magazine? Sure the manga anthologies will say something, but never much. While it may be easy to say that magazines and print media are suffering as a whole, but it's still sad and unnerving when this like this happen.
Also, if I may ask Zac a question (despite being incredibly intimidated by his warning and Darth Vader avatar) : Did you do some work for Anime Insider and/or know of the other writers and editors there?

I use to pick this up on and off over the years, and it wasn't half bad (though it had nothing on Newtype), but still, it's a shame to see it go under.
Now that I think about it, there aren't any more anime magz are there? Newtype is dead, PiQ followed shortly after, Insider just got the axe and that one-shot anime mag that was released a few months ago (can't remember the name...) never came to fruition.
Damn...

Protoculture Addicts is still around, I believe. Also my local Barnes & Noble has started carrying a British anime magazine, but the name escapes me at the moment.

I'm very sorry to hear about this happening. I really love Anime Insider and check it out from the library every month it comes out. (I actually have issue 66 waiting to be read and returned). I've been reading it for some time now and it will be missed.

I was associate editor for Anime Insider for around 2 years before coming to work here full-time; it was my first full-time non-freelance job in this career. The current (well, former now, ugh) editor is a very close friend of mine, and the managing editor is a friend as well. I was hired there by Rob Bricken, who you all know. He remains a very good friend as well.
So this news is particularly personal for me, hence why I won't tolerate anyone being a jackass about it.

I don't get the reason for this comment. Why would people be jerks about a magazine going under, and why would that be any worse than the 12 billion other topics on this forum where people are jerks?
Am I missing something?

Aww... Let's hope they still do the occassional yearly releases. Top ## of 20##. Always enjoyed those.
I'm like a number of others and picked up the mag on and off again depending on the articles and features. It's sad cause I loved their top picks lists, anime deaths spots, and hottest male/female character spots. I always picked up their end of the year specials and seasonal specials whenever they did them cause those were great reads. Although I think I missed last year's. I also enjoyed their "If it was an Anime" spots too. Some were "meh" but always interesting.
AIthough I really wished they did a bigger spread of the "What's big in Japan" parts. You know a bit of a node to fans on the internet and a way to comment on possible fansub shows or RAWs without "officially" commenting on fansubs and internet RAWs. Its been a while since I picked one up. But I think it was always like 3 things at the bottom of a page near the last half of the zine. Oh wow it might even close to a year in a few months! At least 6 months... hmm.
Going along with what posterior_praiser was going with I think that if they could have held out a bit longer when more and more shows started streaming their news and reviews could have been more to date. It sucks they were so liscensed bound and that they couldn't hold out any longer.
I'll try my best to pick up the last couple of issues to show my love for the zine. Thanks for the memories Anime Insider. Baby Konata cries for you.
P.S. bj_waters: It's definitely gotta be Zac's avatar. Honestly the first time I ever found Darth Vader intimidating was when Zac started using it as his Avatar. That dark contrast to the light background? Very effective.
