those who have seen the anime may recall that it was not so much The Count of Monte Cristo as it was Two Teenage Boys Get Caught Up In the Plot of The Count of Monte Cristo. The manga version, meanwhile, puts the focus back on the most interesting character: the Count himself.

As someone who thought just about every character in that series was interesting, to the point that "most interesting" becomes a matter of personal taste (I <3 Franz!), I contest as you second point. If you want a very, very strong justification for the first point, other than that this change is what makes it so distinctive and innovative from the usual adaptations, watch Mahiro Maeda's interview on the extras (if you got the Geneon version).

Well... I'm glad I resisted the urge to buy this until a little later down the line. So many manga adaptations of anime have the problem of being way too short, but most of them just condense the hell out of the storyline and thus ruin it. Since the author was the director, this didn't seem to be doing that, but to just end it midstream? I wonder what the story was behind that. Low sales?
