Apparently, Borders is scheduled to close on April 1st, of next year. Sad

You could call me something like a "newbie collecter", because i just buy from stores, and not online; so this will affect me greatly.

I wanted to know how this might affect you guys, and if someone could confirm how accurate this information is.

Do you mean nationwide or just your local Borders store?

'Cause I can't find any link stating that Borders will be closing nationwide; seeing as how it falls on April 1st, I'm assuming whomever told you this must have been joking.

I'm really hoping you're joking!

As how it would affect me if this news is indeed true...well I guess it wouldn't really affect me too much. I'd have to wait longer for the series I buy to come in the mail, no more chances of getting a volume early. I also wouldn't be able to do any spontaneous book buying while waiting for a movie to start at the movie theater. I guess on the brightside I won't have to maneuver around all the people reading manga with their legs stretched out.

Yes, April 1st, 2010 is significant, but I don't see anything about them closing.

This must be a local closing, I checked around and found nothing on borders completely going under. It's knowing that fact and seeing how successful Borders tends to be that makes me doubt this would be nationwide.

But if this were happening nationwide I wouldn't be to worried. You still got plenty of other book stores and comic stores that sell manga. And if worse came to worse there's always online stores.

I was just at my local Borders today and I saw nothing of the sort myself. I also know mine is one of the top producers for them on the East Coast though. Their entrance into the mall parking lot is the most trafficked entrance to the Annapolis mall. Even more so then the food court entrance. Then again that hardly speaks for all stores. If this turns out to be true it will suck very much for me. They have a manga selection 3 times the size of my Barnes and Noble, they have an actual horror section there, and they have a wider selection of cooking magazines and cookbooks.

Borders has not very successful lately. The company is in danger of losing its listing on the New York Stock Exchange because their shares are selling at such a low price. (Below a dollar per share, I believe.) Borders is in serious danger of having to shut down nationally. It's recent bout of store closings is a desparate attempt to stave off bankruptcy. I have seen reputable sales industry analysts predict that Borders will indeed shut down within a year if things don't drastically turn around for the company.

However, I seriously doubt that an April 1, 2010, nationwide closure date would be announced so far in advance. Nor have I seen anything yet about Borders closing nationally. I wouldn't be surprised to hear someday this year that Borders is going out of business. I just don't think this is the situation in this case.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I find that highly unlikely. It could be just the borders in your area, because I haven't heard any news about Borders going Chapter 11.

The internet is full of rumors that often aren't true, so that is why I am highly skeptical that Borders is closing all its stores.

The linked Wiki link says Borders has had a stock surge recently, shooting up to two dollars a share after getting their creditors to stay on board.

EDIT: Apparently Borders Group shares are selling at $2.94 a share That's a hell of a jump if they were under a dollar a few months ago

EDIT2: But, OUCH, look at that year wide tumble. Ouch. (and that 52 week high/low, 8.02 to .34 cents, DAMN)

I'm glad to hear Borders' stock is doing better now. Border's has been my main manga source for about 2 years now. I hope their fortunes continue to rise. Their situation is still too uncertain for me to be confident about their future as a company.

Over the weekend, I actually heard that Borders is going chapter seven. Although I don't have a link to the source (I read the information in a magazine, not to mention a trusted source told me they are closing down as well).

My guess is that Borders will close down either this year or next. Recently, I've been to Border's and I've noticed that several shelf's are empty (mostly in the music section). I've also that Borders is trying to get rid of the dvd section as well.

This is indeed bad news, for both the employees and people who buy manga there. At least in my state, we still have a Walden's Bookstore that sells manga as well.

That's true, my local Borders is doing a 50% red tag liquidation sale on DVD/CDs. But that could just be part of a restructuring plan (Borders is always too expensive on DVDs any way, they simply can't compete with Best Buy and the like)

If Border's closes nationally, so will Walden's because Border's owns the Walden's chain.

That is why I think if Borders does indeed close down, they'll probably go chapter 11 and not chapter seven. But as a person who bought dvd's from Borders in the past, the dvds are more expensive than Best Buy.

LKK: Opps, I forgot about that one. If Borders does go chapter seven, I'll be out of luck. But I really have a feeling that Borders will go towards chapter 11 more than chapter seven. My reason, only the dvd/cd section had empty shelves. The manga area still had its shelf's full and the manga cows were still grazing there.
