It's subtitled only? Sad

Why does Sentai and NISA (non-limited) charge so much for their 11-13 episode sub-only releases? And at worst, most are in 2 parters.

It has already been started that when a company streams their anime, most licenses get paid off that way. I honestly don't see it worth $30 for a sub-only. Hell, Sentai doesn't do the translations most the time, it's just a fix on what CrunchyRoll uses, maybe just fix it a little and such.

$20 for nothing special sub-only release is more reasonable.

What? There's little money to be made in streaming. Physical media adds layers of complexities and costs.

The fact of the matter, regardless of which camp you are in, is that dubbed anime sells better. Sentai making the decision not to dub a title suggests they don't think it will sell enough even with a dub to cover the cost of the dub. Economy of scale means that fewer copies sold = higher cost per unit.

Hate to tell you this...Funimation and Sentai have both stated that when they stream anime, it mostly pays off the license. You have their titles all over the place. Hell, CrunchyRoll even pays Sentai to have rights to stream it on their site. Funimation goes to HuHu, don't forget the digital market. All that helps pay for the license. The DVDs help pay for everything else.

$30 is a fair price for an 11-13 episode series.

Subtitled only, eh? How pointless. I could (and have) just watch this on CR instead. This went from a probable-buy to a no-buy for me. Sigh. :/

I don't think so. Even more so when Sentai floods the market with a bunch of sub-only DVDs.

I wonder if they will get the special or the sequel series (Tegami Bachi Reverse). Perhaps they will wait and see if the first season sells decently enough.

Most likely, since it's not long running. But then again, it can be that whole "did it sell well enough" thing, too. But I lean more towards "they'd most likely get it". Talking about the 2ns season, not sure on the special, those are hit or miss.

When have they ever said this? Please provide a link.

Also, if you can't afford to pay $30 for an entire series, when just a few years ago most of us were paying that much for just three or four episodes, then you need to find a cheaper hobbie. These companies can't make money on anything much cheaper, especially for brand new releases.

Also, Sentai generally only releases one or two sub-only releases per month, with the occasional odd month having three. I would hardly call that flooding, especially if you truly believe they make all their money from streaming.

First off, it's not a WHOLE series at time when they release those sub-only, they're in half sets at a retail of $50...no sub-only that has nothing extra to it is worth that price. Yes, RightStuf can offer it at like $36. But $36 for half a season...so not worth it. Their sub-only cost as much, if not more then series that have a dub, it should be the other way around.

And it's only common since that companies get money when they stream their anime. What? You think they lose money when it goes to the digital market. They have answered this question at cons and have answered the question. Up to you if you think it's BS, but streaming and the digital market pays for the license.

.

First of all, not all of their series are released in half sets. Many, and often most, are only 11-13 episodes. If you think less than $40 is too much for a complete series, or even half of a series, then I'm afraid I just have to disagree. Many here can remember paying that much for just a hand full of episodes and often no extra features. How much do you believe anime is worth then? And how do you expect the companies to make money on your pricing scheme?

Also, I've never seen your claims reported at any anime convention. I've also never personally seen anyone from Sentai make those claims, nor Funimation state that digital rights pay for their license. In fact, I've always heard quite the opposite, that digital is usually only a small part of their revenue and the majority of their money still comes from physical sales for most titles. I will just chose to believe you are making that up, or misheard, since you are unable to provide anything to back up your claims. If Sentai has said this at so many conventions, then you'd think an online transcript would be easy to find, no?

Also, you have to remember that the Japanese companies get a percentage of sales from most of their titles. So it would be virtually impossible for the digital sales to cover the licensing fee, as part of that licensing fee would be dependent on the physical media sales. Even if a digital stream on CR, Hulu, or TAN covered just the upfront portion of the license, that is only a small portion of the overall licensing fees.
