i've never seen the anime, but i played the gungrave and gungrave overdose games for the ps2.

the gungrave game was awesome in terms of visual stylishness, great jazzy, fast paced trumpet playin', suuuuper bass-ed electric guitar riffed, jazz-orchestral tracks that really set up the mood/feel of the show/game, and a great compelling story centered on the best plot vehicle to ever carry a show...which is,...

REVENGE!!!!!!!!! FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!

besides, Grave carries his own casket on his back, reminding him constantly by its burdensome weight, that a score needs to be settled with the one who put him in it long ago,
....which btw, also is teched/customized out as a missile launcher, a gatling gun, and a extension fitting accompaniment for his two hand guns, with some other ops.

i.e. Grave is one bad ass mo' fo'....thats not to be f****d with!

what more do you want from a show or game?
did i answer your question?

Zombie/Cyborg/Mafia-guy shoots monsters with a coffin? Sounds like a good enough reason to me...

Well, I liked the storyline and the cool action personally. It's not exactly one of my favorites but it was entertaining.

I liked the first half of it but then it went really downhill for me after a while. As the last guy said. It's not great but it's by no mean bad. Its fun and entertaining with a lot of action and that's about it. As long as you don't take it to seriously it can be a decent anime. Though be warned the ending is a bit cheesy and well obvious.

Been a few years since I've seen it, but I remember being completely enamored by the character development. The first half of the series (or wherever it is the flashback stops) feels very reminiscent of an excellent gangster movie: two poor guys coming up together on their own, rising to power from rags to riches, their moral code with one another, and the eventual betrayal. But yeah, the second half killed all the build up and turned it into what you see in the video games: stylized action, gunfights, and over-the-top horror/sci-fi. On the other hand, though, if you're a fan of music the soundtrack is composed by Tsuneo Imahori (guitarist for Yoko Kanno and the musical genius behind such series as Trigun and Hajime no Ippo), so that's another plus. Oh, and if you're watching the series on DVD and have surround sound, the Japanese track has an option for DTS 5.1.

I don't agree that he was emotionless. I mean he was a spoiler[contract killer] as his profession.. Such a job would surely require that you turn any outward display of emotions off.

Anyways, I too thought the character interaction and storytelling were great. I also loved the first half and merely liked the second half; it would have been better if all the fights were done in the style of spoiler[Bunji's though; his fight with Brandon kicked so much ass it wasn't funny. They others transmuting into monsters (particularly Bear and the guy with the wolverine-esque puncture weapons) shitted me about the series because fights that I looked forward to descended into emotionless man vs monster snorefests.] The continuing plot involving Brandon, both spoiler[before and after death], and Harry, was what made the series for me. I found it quite captivating.

I agree with Skylark, that fight with spoiler[Bunji] in the lobby was beyond awesome, but the other final fights were kind of lame spoiler[with the random transformations. Seriously, Bob becomes a helicopter?! WTH?!!]. Though I did enjoy the final episode's last stand. The ending was good as well. Overall I felt it was a bit too slow at times, but it was a good show at the end of the day. Definitely not one of the best, but certainly worth the watch if you like action, mafia, and sci-fi.

I liked Gungrave a lot and it's a show I actually re-watched a few weeks ago and forgot how much I did like it. It's a solid and rather unexpected mob story which when I was initially going into it never expected it to develop the characters as well as it did. I think what throws some people off is since it's based off a video game and it goes into this weird monster fighting thing, kinda like the way Trigun is a western but with the sci-fi bent. That and some people might be put off by it being so dialogue heavy and not so action oriented even though there is quite a bit of action in it. I would say it's definitely a more male oriented show as well which I also like.

It's not everyone's cup of tea but it's a great show if your looking to get away from the cute stuff.

Gungrave has one of the worst first episodes I have ever seen. The main character is as poilk92 said "an emotionless piece of cardboard", the 'action' consists of him standing in 'cool' poses and shooting his guns a lot, while others gasp and watch in horror . . . ugh.

However, once it begins the mafia backstory in episode 2, it gets much more interesting. Perhaps because there are characters who already know each other and have established relationships we can observe. I haven't been able to finish it, though, so I can't comment on how good it is after it goes back to the future in the second half.

Yeah anyone who starts this show has to start from episode 2. When I initially picked up this show it sat on the shelve for a couple of months after watching that first episode. What they were trying to accomplish by that first episode (which is actually episode 18 or so) I don't know, my only guess is they were trying to tie it back to the video game in some way.

Yeah anyone who starts this show has to start from episode 2.

It's not that episode 1 is bad, it's just that it can't be fully comprehended for someone who doesn't know how the show ends. I know that making a first episode like that is a bad move, but that doesn't make the episode itself bad.
I also had the same problem with that episode. Which is why I once stopped on the first episode and just revisited the series years later. Now I've seen the series about 5 times, and that episode 1 is an unavoidable part for me. Though I'd also recommend to anyone who's starting the series to do so from episode 2.

But yeah, Beyond the Grave was emotionless until he visited the graves and started regaining his memories. Thereafter he was pretty much the same he was before.

I remember watching... way back, let's say in one of the first 25 series (can't narrow it down). It struck me as ridiculous in many places. All those deformations, and that frequent shouting in Engrish... it might be a relatively well-known show, but not top tier.

I actually thought the back-story part was bad and thought maybe i just didn't get to the good stuff. Seems like its just isnt for me, I can see that the story has merit but the writing and characters just dont present that story well IMO. Well c'est la vie
