I heard a lot of good stuff about it, and I finally sat down to watch it, and while I was watching it, I loved it. Watched it all in one sitting, it was good. However at the end, I was sitting there wanting more, and I felt a little empty.

Did anyone else feel this? I'm sure a lot of people get this feeling just for a series ending in the first place, but, for me it was like things weren't concluded well enough, or explained well enough.

I just want to know who else felt the same as I did. I can admire, and appreciate all the hard work, style, and intelligence that was put into this series, especially with the awesome philosophies, but I don't feel it was enough.

Tell me what you guys think.

Lain... ah... the memories of watching that late at night...

Personally, I didn't care for it. While I think it's a profound anime with lots of deep messages, I also think it's a steaming pile of you know what. I thought the ending was ok. But the whole series was just "blah" and not very climactic. I really thought they had something going for a while and then it just droned on and on (must like my posts).

Remembering only the good points, I recently tried watching it again and quickly realized why I'll never purchase it.

One thing's for sure, I'll never look at power lines the same way ever again. I swear, over all the traffic and birds, I can hear them buzzing loudly.

I liked it; however, I distinctly recall thinking to myself that others might well dislike it.....intensely. Mileage will rather obviously vary.

I liked what it was about but it never really drew me in. Also the spoiler[episode about the ufos made my eyes roll, felt like the series was just trying to be more off the beaten path than it really was.]

I loved that anime, it's one of those series that I will do anything to defend it's artistic value. To this day i have yet to see a single series that is anything close to SE Lain and I don't think there ever will be one. It's a product of the time that it was made sadly and I don't think we'll ever see a situation where something quite like it will be made again.

Everything about this show really came together in a wonderful way. The art was really unique and perfectly fit the mood. The screenplay was amazing because of it's depth and symbolism. Plus the story had so many layers that it's not something that you can watch while you zone out, you actually have to think about whats happening. Chiaki Konaka really went all out with the his creativity on this one and I think it showed what great things he would be able to accomplish later on. And the directing was great, the timing and subtlety had a great feel to it. It's most likely Ryutaro Nakamura's best work of his career.

I must have seen SEL over 15 times already and I'll probably see it again once Funimation re-releases it in 2011. I hope they get Bridget Hoffman to reprise her role as Lain. It's one of those series that is open to interpretation and you can probably find parallels with Lain and many other things in real life.

I even made a AMV using Lain as a allegorical backdrop to the whole Boxxy Phenomenon a few weeks ago, check it out:
Serial Experiments Boxxy

If you're craving for more Lain, you might want to know there's a Serial Experiments Lain videogame for the PS1 which plays more like a visual novel. It's quite different from the anime too. I myself felt a little unfulfilled after watching Lain, even a little delusional.

I liked Lain. I really liked Lain. I think ABe's designs are always interesting to look at and, though it's been a while and I can't recall all my thoughts on the show, it seemed to me that the issues of identity etc. it staged had resonance beyond its cyber-y material.
And I value it all the more for having seen (what I interpret as) imitators like Boogiepop Phantom that completely paled in comparison.
Now I want to watch it again!

Um, they'll just have the original dub like they do with all their license rescue releases, so you have nothing to worry about.

It's one of my all-time favorite titles. The series does enough to keep you guessing over what is going on with the characters and paints enough relevant facts concerning one's own identity, the blurring line between reality and the wired world and the need of direct human interactions. Perhaps one of the best titles I've ever had the opportunity of looking into.

It's really good though it requires multiple rewatches to try and figure out. Each time you rewatch it you notice something that escaped you before.

I agree with this. I didn't really like Lain at all the first time. The second time I liked it a lot more.

Glad to hear that, though I wouldn't have mind hearing a new dub for it. I thought Bridget Hoffman was good but the rest of the cast was... meh.

BTW I used to be a Moderator on the old TechTV Anime Unleashed forums back in 2002, and I tell you there was a lot of naysayers who were criticizing TechTv's decision to air anime but once Serial Experiments Lain premiered, it changed a lot of minds and converted a lot of skeptics. Though SEL was probably the only title on there that was truly appreciated amongst the Tech community who were unfamiliar with anime.

I remeber watching Lain back when I was first getting into anime. I liked it and it was something that me and the friend I was watching it with could enjoy even though I feel like she is into strange things. hehe

I watched Lain off a glimpse of seeing it on someone's shelf. I liked it alot, because each episode spoiler[ended with a plottwist] just like Code Geass. I still haven't finished it due to other things getting in the way, but like someone else said before you need to watch it over a few times to fully grasp it. I've only seen it once and I know i've missed a few things.
