I've thought for a while that Azuma wants to depict one year in Yotsuba's life...if I'm right, he's not even halfway done yet.
I have doubts that Yotsuba's origins will ever be explained. Koiwai's explanation somewhere around chapter 5 was so vauge as to taunt the reader who wants to know more. The last time this was dwelt upon was briefly at the end of volume 2...which was written years ago now. |

 Just the other day, I was looking up info on Yotsuba here on ANN, and, I started hoping (wishing) that you all would review another Yotsuba GN. It look like my wish came true. 
Anyways, nice review! I really like Yotsuba!

I'm sorry that there is no concrete storyline or character backgrounds in your slice of life comedy manga.
Edit: Also this is not so much a "review" of the volume as it is a rant against the series in general. Poor article ANN, not that I would expect anything else. |

Is this manga similar in tone to Strawberry Marshmallow? I found myself really enjoying that (especially Miu's insane antics).

Upon reading an introductory paragraph I was expecting a negative review but no, it still manages to get B+.
I doubt this is ever gonna get the anime treatment. It will be quite hard when the story is the same every episodes. Still it would be charming if it would be one. |

I think the author said he doesn't want an anime adaption. He doesn't think Yotsuba would work well animated.

A lot of the humor is pure panel pacing, and friggin' brilliant at that. How do you translate the last 2 pages of Yotsuba & the Frog into an anime without it losing something? It could make a very funny and charming anime if done well. But it would never live up to the original manga... In many ways I think Yotsuba utilizes the medium a lot more than most other manga out there, especially within this genre. |

I think an anime adaptation of Yotsuba would be particularly pointless. It works so brilliantly as it is, and that has a lot to do with the medium.
While I take on board Carl's point that little has changed over the course of Yostuba's 8-volume run, quite frankly I couldn't care less. If Azuma continues to crank out book after book of slice-of-life comedy of this caliber, I will happily continue to buy it. A+ material for me. |

As far as I am concerned, Kiyohiko Azuma is a genuine comedic genius if there ever was one; his penchant for timing, dialogue (handled in loving English translation by Yen Press), and facial expressions is so acute it's almost scary. In fact, I don't think I have laughed as hard or as often with reading anything else. Ever. Therefore with any other series, I would completely agree with most of Carl's gripes, but with something like Yotsuba, which manages to be ever so consistently and gut-bustingly hilarious, things like world-building or character backstories are hardly a concern for me.
As for an anime adaptation, I have never quite understood why he has hitherto not considered it feasible. I figured that if his Azumanga Daioh could be turned into an anime and still retain its comedic brilliance, then Yotsuba certainly could as well. |

The only thing I dislike about Yotsuba&! is how damn slow it is. I started it half a decade ago and only three months went by in the story. I'm anxious to see Yotsuba during the winter.

Well, the anime adaptation of Azumanga Daioh wasn't very good for exactly that reason. The original made such good use of the four-panel form that the form became integral to its identity. To adapt something like, you need to go out on a limb and form a new identity, but the anime didn't have the gumption for that. |

I agree that an anime adaptation of Yotsuba&! would be a challenge given the nature of the source material - but I'd still love to see such an attempt. I think it would be adorable. I would especially love to see the Yotsuba vs. her dad's assistant battles.
