In the US? Like 30% I think. The drop off was considered kinda big at the time but then we got that Bruno sequel... thank you Bruno sequel.
And it seems Ponyo is considered a big success even though many are quick to point out its one of Miyazaki's weaker titles. Ponyo is apparently the Cars of studio Ghibli.

This seems like the kind of Ghibli film that could do well in the West. Though, the fact that it doesn't have the name "Miyazaki" plastered all over it might confuse some people out there (sorry for all the cynicism lol).
I'm quite interested in watching this film, having read the book a long time ago, and seeing how they adapted it. Hopefully we'll get a slightly more expedited licensing process for this film seeing as it's Ghibli. Got my fingers crossed!

I wonder if it could catch Alice in Wonderland (could you believe that?) doing $133+ million in Japan....

As we all know, the quality of an anime, hell all entertainment shouldn't be judged by how well or bad it sold. Especially Japan of all places. They love to spend their money on really stupid stuff. Tenga's Japan? Really?

Believe it or not, but I went to see the film today (as I am living in Kyoto). Having not read the book (sorry !), I can't judge the adaptation itself, but the movie is quite an excellent one, typical Ghibli ! quite a must-see.

I was a really great film, probably the best Ghibli movie in the past 5 years or so.

uhm.. isn't Howl's Moving Castle considered Miyazaki's weakest title, i.e. the Cars of studio Ghibli.

Oh, just checked the box office gross for Howl and yes, that would be much closer to Pixar's Cars then Ponyo is. I didn't think Howl's Moving Castle made that much hence why I went for Ponyo.
