I just noticed they don't do the sweatdrop anymore.

One of the most common anime comedic devices and they don't do it anymore. Same with the hard-fall gag. Has anyone else noticed that?

It probably has to do with stylistic tastes in Japan now, so few comedic scenes need such an obvious visual signifier, but its always sad to see a staple go by the wayside. How often are nosebleeds or that tic-tac-toeish shape indicating extreme anger showing up nowadays? Probably very, very little, if at all.

It seems that if a show is an original production there should be little reason to use it, because it was really designed for comics.

Er, no offense, but i've seen quite a few of each, the sweat drop, nosebleeds (of course, i just re-watched Karin, and got into Maria+Holic recently), and a lot of the "tic-tac-toeing".
btw...ifyadidn'kknow....that "tic-tac-toeing" is basically the veins enlarging, usually happening when someone's upset and raging.
I watch mostly comedies, and seen plenty of each, even this coming-to-a-close Winter 2009-010 season.
I mean, it's all inclusive in shows like Baka To Test to Shokanju.

Don't y'all worry, still plenty of it there.

I don't think that they are less common per se however I have noticed a trend in certain shows to plain out avoid them. Shows that have a more lighthearted side or that derive from manga tend to use these things. The more artsy/gritty shows tend to go nowhere near. Maybe it's not the prevalence of such things that has changed but your own developing taste has moved you towards a different kind of Anime ?

A lot of over-exaggerated face-faults have been phased out in the last couple of a years. It was a pretty big thing in the 90's.

Umm.. no? I mean, it's true that I'm not into it like I was, and so I've been stepping outside and noticing how things have changed (ie, why so many shows are centered around high schools). But to notice certain visual cues are missing has absolutely nothing to do with my tastes. I've plowed through 13 series in the last month, none of them older than 2006, and one of them being purely drama and it's just not there.

The tic tac toe thing is the vein thing isn't it?

Yeah, they're less common these days, I would think. But I haven't been really watching comedies... I don't miss them, personally.
