if you're suggesting that Dragon Ball is appropriate for elementary school kids, even by more liberal standards...no. I find that highly doubtful.

It seems fine to the Japanese.

Not really. I'm sure there are a lot of little kids in Japan who do watch Dragonball but it isn't really intended for them. I think it falls pretty squarely into the 'shonen' demographic which I think applies more to the middle school to early high school range. (A group I think Dragonball is appropriate for).

Anyway, you've also taken my comment out of context. I'm referring to the general North American standards for what is appropriate. Obviously these are roughly the standards these people are adhering to and that being the case, I don't think their choice was unreasonable.

heres where you'd be wrong, like one piece, Dragon ball's intended audience is everyone. part of what makes it the best selling manga of all time

Is getting interested in porn such a bad thing? At least by knowing porn you can learn how to have safe sex, something kids were never well aware of.

Wow. You've apparently been watching some pretty conservative porn. Wink

Not really. But who knows where those kids might want to stick their things. Wink

Ah but there's the rub. Sadly, or no, Maryland is not in Japan.

Though the reaction maybe overdone, I do understand how the nudity could be viewed as child porn. Why do you think they put age ratings on the back of the book? What is a crime here is that a man did illegal photocopies of the manga.
Indeed if there is any controversy here it is also who ordered this book for the shelves of an elementary school. Judging a manga by it's cover has it's dangers on both sides of the spectrum. Wink

This is going to be one of the more important otaku news I have or will see this year. I'm glad I was 19 when I started really getting into manga. Libraries have sections they put manga in for a reason. The same goes with bookstores. Alas, that's why you should look at the back of the book for the age rating.

While I would never endorse exposing children to pornography, I don't think parents should freak out if their child happens to see adult nudity. Not all nudity is pornographic and seeing it does not automatically cause people to become interested in porn. There are lots of people who don't have a problem with artistic nudity (Michaelangolo's David statue for example) but would turn their nose up in disgust at most porn magazines.

As for using porn for sex education, I don't think that's a good idea. Because porn sex and real life sex are different. Porn is a fantasy and not necessarily something you should imitate in real life. Kids don't know the difference so exposing them to porn in order for them to learn about sex is not good.

QFT. Porn teaches nothing about relationships, health, or pregnancy, and the avoidance thereof. All porn is for viewing the machanics of the act of having sex, by those unable to do so except with oneself. Sadly with the state of sex education here in the UK, it is the only means by which most adolescents get their sex ed, which is why the UK has the highest teen pregnancy of the EU, it is that pathetic. Thankfully our Channel 4 had commissioned a 4 hour documentary that gathered together doctors, psychologists, and willing couples who exposed themselves in various states of sexual adulthood for pre, during, and post childbearing affects to the human body, and the results of STDs in full naked, no holes barred graphic details, as a road show that went to various secondary (high) schools up and down the country with interaction with the students within. Being a mean parent I made my two teenagers watch the first programme, and though they were reluctant at first, and had the choice of not watching the rest, they did continue with the series, and said it was more informative than any sex ed they received in their own school. Every school Ch. 4 visited with the road show 90% of the boys confessed they regularly watch porn on the internet, and thought that sex was only like what they saw, when responding in a written survey. One boy boasted on camera that he had been watching porn since he was 8. Parents and the internet. Rolling Eyes T'is the reason my two aren't allowed a computer in their rooms on their own.

Not porn. But at least in hentai I've seen cases where the characters suicide/kill/abandon others just because of a pregnancy case.
But to hell with it. Each parents has their own ways of teaching their own kids, though most of them fail/give up in the end.

Indeed they fail for not bothering at all. Some people shouldn't be allowed to breed by the way some children are left to go ferral IMHO.
