An English script which frequently entirely rewrites the original, and which inconsistently alternates between Japanese and English orders on character naming conventions, does not help.
I noticed the same problem with names in Monster Island's Dai-Guard, which was done about a year earlier. Except in Dai-Guard, they use the Japanese name order throughout, which is just bizarre. A shame too, as Dai-Guard is otherwise an excellent dub with re-writes for the better.

Sakura Wars TV is the only part of the franchise I haven't seen yet. I'll have to stick to the Japanese version, as it's got a great cast. Every SW anime has that "expected familiarity" factor to it, and drops you into stories that won't make much sense without knowledge of the games. Which makes me wonder why ADV, Geneon, and Funimation released this TV series, 3 OVAs, a movie, and a special, given that none of the games have been released over here until this year.

If you haven't already, listen to the most recent ANNcast for an amusing rumination over some head-scratching R1 licensing decisions.

Good review, Theron Martin, but j'ai accuse! This from your Sakura Wars review posted on Sept. 01, 2009:
Quote:

Madhouse Studios has earned a reputation for producing some of the sharpest-looking anime series of the past few years, but this one came along before they fully refined their techniques and learned to truly exploit modern digital coloring methods. As a result, the artistry stands at a transition point between the older-school look of the early-to-mid '90s and the sleekness of more recent productions.

Compared with my searing mention of Noir in the, "What are you watching right now? Why?" thread in the anime forum in a post dated August 30, 2009:

Quote:
I did get invested in the Kirika-Mireille relationship so that carried me along. I also dug the lush, painterly backgrounds. The character designs were less impressive and fall about mid-way between the real old school designs from something like, say, The Slayers and the slick, modern look of something like Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom.

Ko-inky-dink? One rather thinks not.

Clearly, suh, you are the Joe Biden of anime reviewers. Oh sure, you cleverly tried to disguise the theft of my intellectual property by stripping out the glittering specificity which made it such a jewel of scholarly observation, but nobody is fooled.

I demand compensation. Namely: a grovelling public apology and a cut of the hefty fee that ANN doubtlessly paid you for the review. My lawyer will be in contact shortly. Wink

With a guy as handsome as Ohgami around and a year passing over the course of the series, some kind of at least tentative relationship between Ohgami and Sakura would be expected, but that is not within the purview of this series.

In my honest opinion, when you have both a female and male lead, it's only typical that something romantic would happen between them, so I consider it a great change in pace when they're just friends/comrades (like Noa/Asuma from Patlabor or Ichigo/Rukia from Bleach).

My one problem with the dub was Kanna's voice, who was made to sound like a dumb-sounding, simple-minded musclegirl, which I never got the impression she was.

I'm glad to see this classic series got a good review, considering it keeps fading from memory as the years go by. I kind of wish I waited for this release, as it has a nicer cover than the original thinkpak. I absolutely love the movie also, and love listening to the full-length 'Miracle Bell' song.

If your lawyer even thinks about filing, best find a good lawyer as this one's out solely to strip anime funds (and that's quite a few series) from your wallet to pay his/her bill.

On topic:
I've seen the previews of this on an older series, and the mecha threw me off given the clothing styles of the pilots. It was hard to make sense on what the hell was going on within the preview, so I decided to give this one a pass for now.

Upon reading the review, and seeing Sentai Filmworks as the license holder, this just pushed the title down even further. SF has been notorious of late of screwing up by hiring companies which can not translate Japanese to English well at all. Even my favorite series has issues, despite being sub only.

What a shame. Although mecha isn't my favorite genre, I'm still willing to try it out. Maybe I'll view an episode or two, as I'm sure TANOD will shove it on their playlist in the future.

I laughed at this:

I personally found Sakura Wars: TV a chore to sit through.

It... just... moves... so..... slow! I never did finish collecting the original print run and sold the volumes I did buy for online credit. That's how bored I was by the whole thing.

Do yourselves a favor and pass on this one. The animation and coloring really aren't that great, either.

The OVAs that were also released by ADV Films were far superior to the TV series. They not only looked nicer but the story (what there was of it) moved along at a good pace and the action scenes weren't bad when they did happen. Much better opening sequence for the first OVA series than the TV show for sure, too. Great theme song as well.

I can't comment about the Funi OVA releases of the Geneon release of the Sakura Wars feature film... I haven't gotten around to watching those yet. I've got years of backlog of anime DVDs I still haven't watched yet!

It'd be shame if the Sakura Wars TV series is the only part of the SW license that's still operating in the US. The better stuff deserves a re-release.

I can't imagine that they would have spent the money for a new translation for this re-issue, so this shouldn't be a problem.

This is the original 2003 dub (Monster Island was closed in 2005), so this badness is not recent.

One interesting side comment on the dub that I couldn't find a way to fit into the review: Iris Chateaubriand was Larissa Wolcott's second mid-run character rescue in less than a year. (She also took over the role of Excel halfway through Excel Saga when the original VA had to drop out because of vocal stain issues.)

And Blood-, I have just one word for you: delusional. Twisted Evil

I would give the English Dub a higher rating like a B+. I though the dub was really good except for Kohran who sounded like she had a nasal problems all the time.

See, there you go again...plagiarizing the sentiment of THOUSANDS of people. Laughing

Sakura Wars strikes me as one of those series that is essentially review-proof. I mean, no matter what a reviewer says about it, how am I supposed to resist a show set in 1918 Japan where opera singers are also a combat unit known as the Flower Division who pilot steam punk mechas? It can't be done.

Like David said, there's no reason to believe they won't use the same translations that were done back in 2003, so there's no need to fear the Sentai name. Although, the main translator translated this series and absolutely nothing else ever, so that's some cause for concern. But to balance that out, there's "additional translation" by the very experienced Shoko Oono. And subtitle script writing by Andrew Kent, who is certainly one of the better subtitle script writers out there.

Dai-Guard surprised me. It was actually a lot better than I thought it would be when I started watching it. The cover art really didn't do it justice I think.

IMO, TV is the worst of them. But there are some individual episodes that stand out. It's not horrible, but if you have seen the OVAs then consider yourself spoiled.

Pretty much agree with the review. Though I would have ranked it Overall(s) C+ Overall(d) C-.

This is a series I had wanted to see when I was just starting out as a fan, but never had a chance to. Unfortunately I've heard some bad things about it since, and the last time I shelled out money for a "Wanted to see it back in the day and finally have the cash to do so" series was Nadesico. I still want my $60 back. The only good thing about that show was the opening.
Despite the pretty art, I think I may give Sakura Wars a pass.
