Hmm.. so does that mean we'll finally see Manga acquiring new licenses? Or at least delivering vhs -> dvd promises that fell into the void. It would be nice to see a quality site for Manga.. they are really behind in web design as far as new designs by adv, bandai-ent, and geneon have shown. Manga reminds me of the baseball team that's in last place in the league that everyone's silently rooting for.

Anchor Bay didn't "do nothing" with Angel's Egg. The license was attached to another property, and to release one they had to release the other. There were some legal issues with the other property (Angel's Egg was acquired as part of a package) so they were stuck. Be thankful they listened to the fans and ALSO did nothing with Warriors of the Wind

By not releasing "Angel's Egg," Anchor Bay essentially did "do nothing" with it. I'm not sure what else you'd call it when a company buys a property and then sits on it.
Even if there were complications with the license, such as being "attached to another property," the fact remains that Anchor Bay did own the "Angel's Egg" rights for a time and decided to not release the film. (The question must then be asked why Anchor Bay entered into such an unfavorable agreement that it was preferable to not do anything with "Angel's Egg" rather than to release it.) |

I still respect Anchor Bay for getting as many supplements out of a show as possible. Hopefully that means they'll re-release many of the Manga titles which were lacking in those areas.

According to an email I received in August 2002 from the webmaster of the Anchor Bay website, they no longer have the rights to "Angel's Egg."

COULD NOT release the film. There's a difference. Did you read the part about legal issues? And no, these legal issues were not AB's to resolve. Legal issues are the same reason why we don't have the ultimo-sweet Blade Runner 3-disc SE on our shelves, why we can never see Superman 2 in its proper form etc etc, and it's a very complex process

Sword of Whedon, could you give us a bit more detail? (I'm just going on what I know so far.) For example: What was this other title? What were some of the associated legal issues with it? Why was the "Angel's Egg" license associated with this other title that had legal problems?
If you're going to try to clear Anchor Bay's good name, don't beat around the bush about it. Can we get this out in the open? |

Regardless of whether it was by their choice or if it was imposed on them by others, they didn't do anything with the property. I didn't lay any blame, nor imply any in the news article. If you some how thought I did, you read more into it than there was written. I couldn't say that they were the company "with the rights to Angels Egg", because they no longer have those rights, and I didn't say "the company that had the rights to angel's egg" because I didn't know that was now public information. He's referring to "In The Aftermath". Anchor Bay aquired Angel's Egg as part of In the Aftermath (because Parts of Angels Egg were used in In the Aftermath). |

Interesting... I had never heard that "In the Aftermath" was part of that deal. But what were the problems keeping Anchor Bay from releasing "In the Aftermath" (other than the fact that it was a horrible film)? What changed between the time "In the Aftermath" was released on VHS (the copy I have was put out by New World Video) and when Anchor Bay picked up the rights? |

To be fair to Anchor Bay, at least it was legal issues which prevented them from releasing an Oshii film to dvd. They didn't just bury it for a couple of years and then try to promote it as a Matrix knock-off like other nameless companies.
