I think the art perfectly encapsulates what the original Japanese program is about. It's sort of a family-friendly show with rarely subversive, but sort of naughty humor. Funimation's version is pretty funny, too, though somewhat disturbing.

The review is pretty much dead on, although the art style was never trying to be impressive. The fact that it is deliberately bad adds to the humor. I don't think it was ever meant to be compared to anything else in that regard. Otherwise, I agree with the rest of the review.

I don't know why people think that Crayon Shinchan character design is unappealing. To me, its character design is very unique among cloned anime/manga character design incests which consist of stereotypical patterns of big glittery eyes, small mouth, and over-detailed hairstyles. Sometimes I wish fhat character designers do some crazy experimentation with designs instead making another variation of Moe-influenced characters.

it is a little bit like the Japanese saying 12-oz mouse has bad artwork.
I, however, would've found it even funnier if it were "moe-influenced character artwork" spouting the same lines. |

Well, the first season of Crayon Shin-chan had a more...realistic approach to it. This is what it has evolved into.

I tried to watch this anime but it's not the type of anime that I really like (I suppose thats why I prefer a long comedy series, like Keroro Gunso, then this), but thats probably because it is better if I watch it from the beginning.
Anyway, I want to know 2 things about this anime. One, how many episodes does it have (and if the dub is close to it)? And two, and most important, how much Japanese reference does this anime have (if it have a lot, then that is good, since Funi will most likely be the one who also dub Gintama, which obviously a lto of people want to) |

Dude, your opinion on the art is your own, but to compare the animation to every single show available... I mean, it just encourages distributors to release similar shows for ever and ever! I read a review like this and it reminds me that animation fans constantly suffer for the benefit of anime fans. I just want a domestic release of Kemonozume/Kaiba/Mind Game. Yuasa Rules. |

Crayon Shin-chan is one of the longest-running of all anime series, with an episode count more than 2.5x that of Keroro Gunso.
If you're talking about the Japanese version of the series, it's over 630 episodes. Funimation has not made it clear how many episodes they plan to release for their version, but they did talk about a "second season" in the audio commentary for this volume so presumably they've committed to somewhere around 50 episodes at minimum. Your second question was explained in the review, but I'll clarify: Funimation's dub is quite different from the original and has removed nearly all of the Japanese-specific references. That is absolutely no reason to be concerned that Funi will do the same with Gintama, too, however. Shin-Chan is the only title they've ever altered this drastically and it has definitely not been reflective of a trend from them.
Okay, I'm confused about what you're getting at here. I don't at all agree that bad art should be tolerable just for the sake of having variety. As it is, there's plenty enough variety out there amongst good-looking shows. Besides, name even one anime series whose character designs look uglier. Just one. Isn't the art not supposed to look good? I thought the point was that it was supposed to look crayon-drawn as if by a child.

I think he's getting at that lines in the review like this:
Actually, a good many people, including myself, adore Shin-chan directly for its artistry. Like therealssjlink said, Shin-chan didn't adapt stylistically into the crazy-distinct and wonderful Yuasa-soaked mind trip we animation-philes love until a few years after its television debut. This stylistic evolution has been documented by Ben at AniPages and echoed by John K. in Cartoon Brew. In 1992 the series just looked like any other kid's show from the time, a la Doraemon or Chibi Maruko-chan (although Yuasa got his hands on the latter, as well). I'm actually glad the later episodes featuring the more angular and stylistically interesting character designs are being released in the U.S., since they're much more expressive and funner to watch. Most Shin-chan fans invariably prefer the crazier style to the earlier one. I can understand how it wouldn't appeal to everyone, but I think to say the art is "ugly" is too much of a general blanket statement. I find the charming-style of Shin-chan WAY more appealing than, say, the typical Yoshiaki Kawajiri title. Key is free to have his opinion on the art of Shin-chan, but I think the choice of words in the review was just poor in this case. Of course, I find myself defending what typical anime fans write off as "ugly" all the time, especially for titles like Kemonozume and Shin-chan. |

What I was getting at was my frustration with the anime fans' taste superseding my own taste. Although technically anime, Shin-chan doesn't fit into a popular "anime" mold. The fact that this is even being released in America, even with a rewritten script, completely excites me and gives me hope that even more experimental and unique work can be released over here. And then when I hear people diss the animation and art, the only aspect of the original Japanese production left intact... I guess what I'm getting at is if this is what the majority considers "ugly" then I think bad art should totally be tolerable for the sake of variety.

I'm serious. It utterly baffles me that anyone would find this style of artistry appealing; normally if I have a personal dislike for something in an anime, I can usually at least figure out why others might like it, but this is one of those rare exceptions. Apparently some do like it, though, so I guess you'll just have to write off the "ugly" comments as my personal abhorrence for that visual style. I absolutely said what I meant, though, and I know I'm far from the only one who thinks those designs look awful. And do note that I wasn't criticizing the animation, just the character artistry. |

To me, I find that I prefer the "ugly" look more than any other stereotyped anime style for comedy (not for action or drama animes). I think it this way, because Shin Chan is more into the slap stick and jokes of the show. If they made it "pretty" it would take away of what it is. And if you look at most american adult cartoon shows, they are not very pretty also, for most likely the same reason. The show might also be funny to people who like shows like South Park and would be most likely be turned off by an more anime look to Shin Chan (if they are not into anime in the first place).
Anyway, I like the show when I watch on Adult Swim. You never know what they going say next. And Yeah, it does have it's hit-and-miss jokes, but sometimes you miss a joke completely because your too busy laughing at the last one. I had many times I had that I was drinking something and then spiting it out from one of the terrible (but funny) things one the children said in the show. Shin Chan would be something I would watch over and over again and it looks good with your other american cartoon DVDs too. |
