Spider-Man 2? Herbie? The Mummy movie that created new lows for the franchise? (Well, it was already pretty bad to begin with...) I am afraid. I don't think there'll be even parody value in seeing this film...

"Bring action and geek cred to the table?" I don't like the sound of that one bit.

With these people as writers, I wish the copyright dispute goes for another decade. If Harmony Gold didn't underestimate the Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada as just another cheap cartoon from Japan and didn't lumped them as one show, maybe US could have better chance to produce as live action movie.
Honestly I don't know what really fueled Tatsunoko, Big West, and Harmony Gold dispute. Is it solely about copyright or money issues?
Anyway, there are crucial elements that these writers have to deal smartly or movie will look like another bad bloated budget Hollywood film. Macross has following elements crucial to its franchise.
1. Massive Alien invasion
2. Destruction of Earth
3. Alien technology that allows human to build transforming robots and super massive starship
4. Love triangle
5. Idol singer or whatever musical performer(s)
6. Winning the war against aliens despite the odds.

This isn't HG's problem. This is Tatsunoko and Big West's problem. And the copyright dispute only keeps us from getting more Macross in the U.S. Also, other than merge them together, there was a lot of content which remained surprisingly unedited for its time. If you want a bad Macek job, look for the Ziv dub of Harlock.

It's also Harmony Gold's problem, since the dispute began when Harmony Gold blocked Macross Plus merchandise from being imported from Japan to the U.S. And many of us think that more Macross in the U.S. and the rest of the world outside Japan is nothing to sneeze at.

The Harmony Gold/Tatsunoko/Big West problem has spread to DVDs, too (try getting a legit Macross the Movie DVD with English subs), so all fans are affected. And the merchandise is overpriced mainly because most can't be mass-imported to the U.S. after Harmony Gold's blocking. Let's hope they resolve the problem.

Great to see we have another case of people whining and crying over something that hasn't even been made yet.
Can't some of you even wait until the film has been made to throw stones at it?
As someone who watched Robotech when it first aired in the US, I am hoping for the best and will remain to do so until I am given reason not to.
I only ask for a few things out of the movie.
1) The Macross Saga is far too huge to be simply one movie. So while it may be out of the question, I would like to see it as 2 or even 3 movies. Therein lies a problem. A film like this is a financial risk and I don't think anyone would want to fund a 3 film contract without seeing how the first ones does in the theaters.
2) A cast of unknowns with maybe 1 or 2 well-named stars. I would much rather see much of the funding go to things outside the budget for the actors and actresses.
3) Keep the story as close to the origional Robotech story. I would not be too happy if they went away from what made Robotech great.
4) "We Will Win" must stay in tact. While most of Minmay's songs were rather poor and hurt my ears at some times, this song was epic in my mind and is what made Force of Arms quite possibly one of the few episodes of any shows that still gives me chills to this day.
Well in closing, I am keeping my fingers crossed that this movie (or movies) will be a strong representation of what made Robotech great and what was in mine and many other people's opinion the flagship for bringing anime to the Western world. While many may disagree with this statement, facts do not lie. Without Robotech, anime would not have seen the kind of light it saw after that and up until today.

They co-wrote Spider-man TWO, people, not 3 (and even 3 wasn't as bad as some made it, unless you're one of those "fans" who think Venom is the most important villain in the mythology. ). Compared to X-men 3's taking the mythology and ripping it to shreds, Spidey 3 felt like a "wow, we got off easy here". I'll take a few corny lines and Peter doing a goofy dance (hey, remember he IS a nerd, even when acting emo/"cool") over offing the second most important character of the Dark Phoenix Saga in a movie supposedly partially based off it, "zombie/mental disorder" Dark Phoenix, Juggernaut with an IQ of 20, etc.
But compared to the previously planned writer, who gave us Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, pretty much ANYONE was going to be a disappointment.

If Robotech's claim of historical value lies in how it brought anime to the "Western world" (never mind that Europe and most of the rest of the world except North America was airing more accurate and more popular anime before Robotech), it should be of some concern that the people who actually made the best anime in it--Macross--are actively blocked out of the film and many other matters. If we're concerned about keeping as close to the original as possible, it should be of some concern that the Harmony Gold/Tatsunoko/Big West problem will prevent much of the original material from appearing in the film. There's room for both hope and skepticism here.

Millar and Gough co-wrote Spider-Man 2 with two other credited writers and one more uncredited writer. Only Alvin Sargent got the sole screenplay credit. Millar and Gough did write the Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor by themselves.
As great as the 80's work of the previous writer (Kasdan) was, his newer stuff doesn't come off as well. He wrote The Bodyguard and directed/co-wrote Dreamcatcher.

There is concern and there are the stupid posts that always happen anytime a news story is posted about anything having to do with a Live-Action anything. It is both funny and sad how the masses rush to their computers to flame something they know almost nothing about. "Well I won't see this movie because blah blah blah" "Well I heard that so-in-so is involved so I know it's going to be terrible". Gimme a break. All these people do is show how foolish they really are. Trust me, I to have concerns about this project because this is the very show that introduced me to the world of anime and it holds a very dear place in my heart. For decades I have wanted to see a live-action anything based on Robotech. So it is only natural that I have concerns. But I refuse to allow those concerns to rule my life like it seems to rule some other people's. If the movie is made poorly, then I disregard it. It is not the end of the world. What does concern me however is the current state of the typical anime fan. I have been around the block a long time and I thought it was bad around 2001, but holy jeez. They are just getting worse and worse. More otaku-ish. More anti-social. More elitism. More complaining. And worst of all, more like a parasite.......stealing anime and doing nothing to return anything to the circle.
Now back the the whole Robotech vs. Macross thing. They are different, period. Yes, everything in Robotech was either footage from Macross and other shows as well. But,yeah? So what? Yes I know many of the details about who owns what and what is not allowed for use in any future projects. But I have faith that anyone who is working on this project is more than up to speed on all the legalities and such. If the Veritech fighters do not look exactly like the ones from the show, big whoop. If the SDF-1 is missing one of its radar towers, no tears will be shed by me. My main concerns with this project were already stated in my above post. Pretty much, I just want the Robotech story to stay in tact. That is for me and for many other's was the beauty of this show. The story, the charaters, and the drama. Not little details in the mechs.

That has nothing to do with HG, since they never even licensed it in the first place.

Yes, because Professor X never got killed in the comics.

If the Shadow Chronicles and the similar Voltron dispute demonstrate anything, it's much more than just little details in the mechs at stake. Minimizing the story and legal issues, by chalking it up to "big whoop," isn't going to wish the larger problems away.

Actually, HG has been trying to license Macross the Movie merchandise, and has stated that they want to do the same for the movie itself--while simultaneously claiming that anyone who does license it has to go through them.
