WHAT IS RAMEN?!? I see it in practally every anime series I watch. Inuyasha and NAruto both love the stuff, and the Gundam pilots can't get enough of it. I want some!!! Japanese people, I plead to you. How do I make my own ramen? Or is it a special purchase item?

Most Japanese restaurants serve ramen, though I have yet to find a Japanese eatery that offers ramen that tastes the same as what you get in Japan....

you could go to pretty much any grocery store to get instant ramen. I've never had ramen that wasn't instant, it might be interesting to try. Although when you have instant ramen for like five days in a row (luckily it's been a while since i had to do that) it gets pretty old.

Well there's always instant ramen that you can pick up at any convenience store. I always eat the stuff whenever I'm hungry and don't have time to cook. Plus it's cheap. If you want ramen noodles made from scratch I'm sure you can google it and find recipes. But I don't think you'll come as close as to the ramen served overseas in Japan.

Ramen is like the staple food of the college student. Instant ramen at normal grocery stores..well, they suck. You HAVE to find imported versions (not necessarily Japanese: though I do highly recommend Sapporo Miso flavoured ramen). Import versions tend to be about twice the price of you generic ramen. But it is heavenly stuff *drools*.

Generic brand ramen you get a brick of basic noodle and a packet of seasoning (basically a powder version of a 'boulion' cube... Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop ).

Imports have a variety of different types of noodles, and usually come with 3-7 packets of sauces, seasonings, dried veggie, oils, pastes, etc. Try to find a local Asian market to get your ramen. You'll end up drinking all the water out of your bowl!

Hot beef bowl is a great flavor imported from Korea. Damn cheap too. Some imported stocks are reasonable. If you live in a place with significant asian population, say the Pacific Northwest, it is easy to get ramen from ramen shops and from the stores. As for places with less of an Asian population, like Iowa, you are on your own.

Yummmm....

There's a place called Oshima Ramen in Denver that serves some excellent stuff. IIRC, a co-owner has a few shops in Tokyo as well. I highly reccomend it if you get the chance.

Though instant ramen will never be the same O_o

Ramen is soooo good, so cheap and so bad for you (so much sodium). With how cheap it is, I can't resist though!

Travel over to Des Moines. 100th street in Urbandale (nice side of town) there is a little Asian market called "Wang's", it is in a little strip Mall between the East-West streets of Douglas (N of Wangs) and Hickman/aka HWY 6 (S of Wangs).

Wangs is on the East side of 100th. TRSI is a block away from there Anime catgrin + sweatdrop . I used to go get noodles for lunch during winter.

I'd try to get some variety into me though, somehow. I've had it twice, and it's just so annoying. It's practically like you're eating nothing and getting worse and worse as you eat is.

Horrible stuff.

After boiling the ramen, I re-wash it in hot water. I don't know if it actually does anything, but it -looks- like it's removing something from the noodles.. Given its frothy nature, I assume it's sodium or something close to it. Even if it isn't, it still makes -me- feel better about eating it. :p

And, I'd assume most of the fat in instant ramen comes from the packets... so if you throw out the packet and eat it with veggies or real meat instead, you end up with both a better-tasting and a more-nutritious "meal".. sure, that means you have to buy more than just ramen... but at 10 cents/packet, you owe it to yourself to splurge a little and eat better. :p

My mother buys this box of instant noodles at the Asian supermarket all the time. I think it's 25 for $5, but I'm not sure if it's ramen.

The stuff itself is from Thailand I think, so I doubt it's ramen, just some other form of instant noodles.

It's in an orange wrapper and contains noodles, garlic powder, some crushed red pepper, and some really greasy substance.

I think the brand name was "Mama" or something like that. Kind of a funny name, but my father eats those all the time for lunch, although he likes to add his own extra ingridients like meat, other spices, and some times veggies.

We've been eating this stuff ever since we moved here to Texas (I think I was about 3 months old when that happened. So that's almost 20 years).
