Ever 17 is just way, way too long. It should be 3 not 5 routes and entire sequences- kick the can, especially- just don't need to be there. It is just drowned in hours and hours of timewasting- a classic VN curse. The ending is somewhat satisfying for the twists, though it requires you to accept a couple of totally non-sensical events spoiler[ such as free diving at crush depth. More than once!]

The problem isn't the implementation of skip mode; its that the text is technically marginally different. Theres a plot reason for that. That reason makes it no less boring at all. I feel like Ever 17 is better in remembrance, where you reflect on the cleverly contrived ending, than playing where more than half of it is sub-par slice of life nonsense for no reason.

Remember 11 is in my view considerably the best of this series- unfortunately still unreleased here.

It's also important to note that this version of Ever 17 is using the Xbox 360 port's script which has some pretty big rewrites and didn't have any involvement from Uchikochi.

I haven't read either myself but this review on Kiri Kiri Basara goes into them without spoilers (section is called "changes" if you want to skip to it)

I have not played Never7, but I have done Ever17. I have family that swear by it as a pretty great experience, especially if you are really into some of the more convoluted VN plots, but I personally found Ever17 back in the day, to be a bit too obtuse to get into. Keep in mind, I say this as someone who has cleared the ENTIRE first half of the Umineko series.

It's mentioned in the review, but Ever17 has two protagonists to pick from, and this was NOT telegraphed well at all back when I played - the perspective shifting kept seeming like poor writing, until I figured out that some characters were addressing each different instance of "me" differently, and just outright calling one of the protags "kid" does not help make it any more readable.

This has the same issue I see in Doki Doki Literature Club - even if you have a vibe for where the story is going, you still have to wade through a VERY purposely-mundane opener to get to the meat of things. This being an older "classic" VN as well, means it's a test of patience+reading comprehension as things DO NOT flow in any natural/smooth sort of sense.

If you're looking for something that has a vintage novelty to it, and a classic-looking vibe these may be worth checking out, but I just cannot suggest someone just randomly start into Ever17 on a whim, it's a commitment.

Ah! I didn't know this. It sounds like this really addresses some of my problems with the original release. It appears it may also introduce new ones but I can't speak to those.

While the girls were cute, I never felt particularly compelled by the dating aspect; in some cases, it even made me a little uncomfortable, because Makoto is kind of a sexist ass and you gain points with some of them by being a jerk.

Be glad you didn't play the ONE. remake, where the protagonist in that game is an absolute piece of human garbage who is constantly mean to every girl he interacts with, spoiler[gaslights a possibly neurodivergent middle schooler into being his girlfriend, and tries to set up his childhood friend to be raped by a stranger.]

Did the game include the Append Story system?

(The original game had a way players could create their own scripts and run them under the game's engine. IIUC, the PSP release didn't allow creating scripts, but included a number of the best Append Story releases.)

Has anybody compared the translation to Lemnisca's translation?

Thanks for clarifying this! I never played Ever 17, so I wasn't sure. None of the official materials said which version this was and i couldn't get any info from reviewers with advance copies because it was embargoed. Is there anywhere that describes the changes in greater detail?

I don't know specifically, but I did find out that the script changes involved making some reveals and mysteries more obvious, and treating the audience like idiots, which...kinda defeats the point of a mystery.

I didn't feel like the script was treating me like an idiot, nor were the reveals totally obvious. while i was researching the game, i saw someone mention that and i have a suspicion that's from the perspective of someone who already knew all the twists and turns. that would make any new hints in the script seem like they were revealing too much because they already knew how the dots connected, whereas to a new player they're still quite abstruse. but also i'm the kind of person who lets the story wash over me instead of actively trying to solve mysteries, so maybe i'm not the best judge here.

Nice, Ever17 is getting another shot in the US Market. I was gonna dust off my Hirameki release and give it ago at some point.

I was fortunate enough to meet Kotaro Uchikoshi and get a shikishi board signed by him back at AX2016. Poor guy nobody knew who he was, then I went right over and mentioned Ever17! and he lit up!

I have never played Never 7 nor the sequel Remember 11, too many other great VNs and not enough time.
