This is kind of hilarious. "How dare you continue to use features of the consoles and games that you paid for! That's bad!"

I'm sure that somebody at Nintendo decided to put this out there more to preemptively cut off attempts to blame them for not maintaining security around it. But, it still seems silly. If people are cut off from using it, then they are going to use other methods. And, I feel like if somebody goes through the trouble of doing this, they probably know they aren't using anything official to do it.

Did you even read the article? They didn't anything like that at all. They just said that there's a security risk in using such services, which is 100% true. It sucks at the official online services were shut down but it does cost a lot of money to run and more so when you need to ensure security is strong. Third party services for online play have the bare-minimum security if any at all

I replayed Wind Waker HD recently using Pretendo, and nothing bad happened. But I do see the risk of using services like that in the long run.

Yes, I read the article, and it's still silly. The code for this particular replacement is open-source, so anyone in the know can take a look at it and point out/fix any potential security vulnerabilities. It's even sillier because there's been a similar project running for a decade that replaces the Wi-Fi Connection service used by the original Wii and DS, and Nintendo has never said a peep about that.

(Also, this is why multiplayer is best on PC games with dedicated servers. No need for any sort of central service!)

Nah, sorry, but I trust my fellow gaming nerds quite a bit on this front (except for me, it's the 3DS, I don't have a Wii U)

Oh, how nice of Nintendo to worry about the security of us peasants.
Perhaps contribute by not closing down services and throwing lawsuits at people who are trying to fill the void you left empty? That'd be really helpful.

I suppose your entire network could potentially get compromised that way? It's extremely unlike, and not much more probable than with sanctioned (and defunct) methods, but I guess it's not technically impossible.
Anyway time for another round of Splatoon 1, once I'm done with Pokémon Y.

Wait, I was planning on a WWHD replay at some point. Can I not play it without Pretendo? O_o

The security risks existing does not mean they posted this driven by a burning desire to inform customers. Piracy in general has security risks. Companies aren't against it out of concern for people's security.

Using private servers is always a risk. Especially ones that ask for your information and even payment info like some private servers for old MMO offer.

I'm all for people using them to play and experience old online games and features but it is a risk you should be aware of. Common sense says to know what you're doing if you're dabbling in this stuff.

I know the interwebs first knee jerk reaction is to mock Nintendo for this, but I see this as pure and simple CYA on their part. They are like, “Hey, people are using online stuff for a console we don’t support. We are telling you this is risky and we don’t have anything to do with it. Now don’t sue us when something bad happens, mkay?” This isn’t them shutting it down or fighting because piracy or anything I’ve seen people spin this. I guess people forget this is a major international company with lots of cash. That makes them a target for anyone with the silly notion that lawsuits equal quick case.

It's because of the name, the devs foolishly named it Pre-(tendo) because it's silly, however for Nin(tendo) this seems as a possible link to them.

So they are just announcing that it isn't connected to them in case something goes wrong, imagine that someone crashes into a house using a car of the same model of yours and similar plates, you need to made it really clear that it wasn't you.
