This is kind of hilarious. "How dare you continue to use features of the consoles and games that you paid for! That's bad!"

I'm sure that somebody at Nintendo decided to put this out there more to preemptively cut off attempts to blame them for not maintaining security around it. But, it still seems silly. If people are cut off from using it, then they are going to use other methods. And, I feel like if somebody goes through the trouble of doing this, they probably know they aren't using anything official to do it.

Did you even read the article? They didn't anything like that at all. They just said that there's a security risk in using such services, which is 100% true. It sucks at the official online services were shut down but it does cost a lot of money to run and more so when you need to ensure security is strong. Third party services for online play have the bare-minimum security if any at all

I replayed Wind Waker HD recently using Pretendo, and nothing bad happened. But I do see the risk of using services like that in the long run.

Yes, I read the article, and it's still silly. The code for this particular replacement is open-source, so anyone in the know can take a look at it and point out/fix any potential security vulnerabilities. It's even sillier because there's been a similar project running for a decade that replaces the Wi-Fi Connection service used by the original Wii and DS, and Nintendo has never said a peep about that.
(Also, this is why multiplayer is best on PC games with dedicated servers. No need for any sort of central service!)

Nah, sorry, but I trust my fellow gaming nerds quite a bit on this front (except for me, it's the 3DS, I don't have a Wii U)

Oh, how nice of Nintendo to worry about the security of us peasants.
Perhaps contribute by not closing down services and throwing lawsuits at people who are trying to fill the void you left empty? That'd be really helpful.

I suppose your entire network could potentially get compromised that way? It's extremely unlike, and not much more probable than with sanctioned (and defunct) methods, but I guess it's not technically impossible.
Anyway time for another round of Splatoon 1, once I'm done with Pokémon Y.

Wait, I was planning on a WWHD replay at some point. Can I not play it without Pretendo? O_o

The security risks existing does not mean they posted this driven by a burning desire to inform customers. Piracy in general has security risks. Companies aren't against it out of concern for people's security.

Sigh. Once again, Nintendo is 100% entirely in the right with exactly what they are saying and doing... and once again, every self-righteous, entitled little kid that sees this fails to even remotely understand and coughs up more entirely delusional, self-justifying, self-aggrandizing lolol huhuh fits over it.
Y'know, (takes a moment to rub my temples) as soon as I read Nintendo's statement originally, I knew that in response there would be more self-important lol's little internet jackals puffing out the chest out and trying to bluster and sputter and fake-laugh and pretend that everything big bad evil incompetent Nintendo does or says is wrong and a personal insult to them, with all of the "haha this is funny it doesn't bother me" insincerity of someone trying painfully to hold a grudge as if Nintendo poisoned their first born child or something just because they protected themselves from piracy, shut down an illegal theft operation, or cease and desisted plagiarists that can't make their own IP without stealing one.
The same types of people that imagine some fabricated "lol" humor out of this, piling on with all the main-character-syndrome tone of 4channer brainrot kids that try to justify everything from bad-faith company slander based on fabricated assumptions coming entirely on something someone heard from someone else from someone else from a clickbaiting sensationalist source-deprived youtuber rant from some screaming reactionary, or some crybaby persecution complex when a company's business model doesn't meet their warped standards of made-up reality. Gut-reacting like bawwing half-wits whenever Nintendo has the gall to say or do something that's actually entirely accurate and reasonable from their end, when nothing is actually funny and their statement is not only entirely reasonable, but also entirely accurate.
This entire forum thread and all of it's replies are a perfect microcosm of this same idiocy repeating playing out yet again from every diseased comment section for the thousandth time:
You have ONE reasonable, intelligent, normal person in here pointing out something that's actually a realistic, accurate and fair assessment and speaking as if they have even a modicum of common sense, and the rest of the comments are just a bunch of screaming little kids going "lol lol haha lol lol lol huh huh huh neendendo so dum huhuh lol lol lol lol" to try and scream and guffaw and drown out the one reasonable person in the room who actually had anything worth saying, as if there was one grown adult surrounded by feral, vicious, overstimulated chimpanzees that start jumping up and down and hollering when the topic of literally anything Nintendo says or does, comes up.
Just once, just one time when it comes to this kind of thing.... I genuinely wish you children really had the emotional maturity or intellectual potential to at least take more than half a step back to truly see what you really all sound like in situations like this. Even if but rarely, or for the first time. Just.... some self awareness. For once.
