After reading this article, I can't say I'm surprised because I knew streaming like Netflix, Crunchyroll, etc... would bring a lot of money for the anime industry. So to be honest, that is to be expected. I expect this trend to continue in the years to come.

I forget that Peacock has anime, they don't even have an animated section so without knowing a specific series I had to dig through genres. I'm really glad I did though because I have been wanting to watch Cromartie High School for awhile now!

What goes up, will eventually go down. I wonder if it also applies here.

Well there was the Covid dip since then, but it may slow, but it shouldnt dip for a long time at this rate.

My only issue is man the amount of tourists and toxic new gen fans are an absolute pain online. Theyre all so sensitive and complain about basic fan service; like its [expletive] anime, its kind of its thing.

Sadly, theyre clearly here to stay if these figures are anything to go off.

Unless streaming suffer from some kind of scandal, or a major technological drawback which for now I don't see, then no. But I do see couple of problems which I'll talk about below.

But as I said in the past, I have a major love-hate with streaming in general whether it's Netflix, Crunchyroll (before they went premium and Sony/Aniplex bought them out), Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max. The problem is when it comes to 4K UHD is that the detail and the HDR (that applied to Dolby Vision) aren't as sharp or detailed like compare to the Blu-ray/4K UHD BD. My other problems with streaming:

  • 3rd party exclusive titles aka any 3rd party titles with Netflix originals, Max Originals, etc... don't stay on those streaming sites for too long, they can be removed from that streaming sites/providers when their expiration date due and the facts that a lot of these 3rd party titles exclusives don't have physical media release. This is my biggest complaint, and Netflix is the biggest culprit of that.

  • 3rd party titles that aren't a streamer provider's exclusives don't stay on there permanently and are subject to removal based on the nearing expiration date. That applies to most of my foreign TV dramas from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and non-English speaking European dramas. This is what happened to Pili Fantasy: War of Dragons (the creators who made Thunderbolt Fantasy and Wulin Warriors also made this series) when it was on Netflix for a while back in 2019 and then it got removed in 2022. A lot of these titles include foreign-language TV dramas don't have physical home video release in the US, so that makes it harder for me to find access to these great TV dramas/shows from outside of the English-speaking environment.

  • Subscription prices keep increasing like every year!!! I don't need to explain what that is. I also can confirmed that people are cutting back on streaming probably due to that.

  • Password sharing crackdown. I mean when you got people complaining about the increasing subscription prices and leaning on their friend's streaming subscription to alleviate the cost and the password sharing crackdown from Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max. Yeah, this is not helping the customers/consumers.

If you believed I missed anything else about the problem and drawback of streaming for customers/consumers and anime fans, please let me know below.

Really hope that the production committee now would consider renewing anime for new season that the previous season did well in overseas in both streaming and merchandise but not meeting expectation in Japan.

That would be great, but it'll draw ire from the "western companies shouldn't be involved with anime production" folks in the US even though we already had anime aimed at the US audiences before (ie: Little Nemo, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, etc...). I really hate those type of anime fans that think like that.

Well rest assured this already happens and has been happening for years now. Most recent time I can think of is the Black Butler anime staff saying overseas popularity was the major reason they brought it back.

Exactly. Cash is cash. Just because it comes from somewhere else does not mean it is not money.

Hulu generated nearly as much money as Crunchyroll despite their anime graveyard reputation. Interesting.

It's kind of sad how little impact HiDive has had on the overall anime industry when they didn't even break into the top streaming sites and even Amazon had more impact than them. Though I imagine part of this is probably from Amazon Japan.

there is also another factor as well. because of certain japanese companies deciding to region block all overseas servers, they also lost foreign customers that prefer to import from the source!

punishing all overseas customers in hopes that those same customers will pressure visa/mastercard to change course in their policy is a bad strategy!

Not too surprising given not very many people know what a HIDIVE nor Sentai Filmworks is these days (random example I still remember (context tweet for those not signed-in-thanks Elon)). Ask people IRL that are anime fans what a Crunchyroll is, they'll know it, ask what a FUNimation is, they'll likely still know it despite the March 2022 rebranding and April 2024 site shutdown. But ask them what Sentai Filmworks or HIDIVE are? They'll tell you they've never heard of them, and if you ask if they've heard of certain series on there that aren't on Crunchyroll or Netflix, if they've seen them, they'll probably tell you they watched it on [insert most popular illegal streaming site that's currently live and not taken down yet here] (they won't know what torrents are).

As of 2020, they had 300,000 subscribers (there isn't more recent data).
Quote:
When did HiDive launch and how has it been doing?

HiDive launched two and a half years ago. The growth has been fantastic. We went from just a handful of users to floating around 300,000 users right now. It’s [subscription video on demand] SVOD, so it doesn’t have advertising.

When I first started ADV, there was VHS and LaserDisc. Then we saw DVD transfer. Then we saw the transfer to BluRay. Then Apple launched QuickTime and I saw that and I’m like, “OK, this party’s going to be over at some point.” ADV actually started to build a streaming site at one point, but that had to go on hiatus around 2003.

Flash forward, once Sentai had a library of content to build a streaming site, we started working on HiDive. We started working on it around four years ago.

There's also the issues of how they pulled out of many markets, lots of series have constantly been removed no matter how big without warning (Ex: Made in Abyss S1 is missing, only S2 is on there as of this post) sometimes after not much time (Ex: Escha Chron was removed after less than 2 years), the apps having many problems, them getting only a small handful of titles per season, sometimes as little as like 2 (Spring 2024: Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night and Whisper Me a Love Song, that was their entire simulcast lineup for new titles, and Urusei Yatsura was the only ongoing one from the prior season), and it's not surprising they're not contributing that much at the end of the day. The HIDIVE subreddit also gives an idea of things.

[Edit]You can now add "They gave advanced notice, but only a 2 day notice on 3 Winter 2023 titles, including one Sentai was on the production committee for (Giant Beast of Ars)." Yeah, that's not going to help HIDIVE survive or contribute much.
