After reading this article, I can't say I'm surprised because I knew streaming like Netflix, Crunchyroll, etc... would bring a lot of money for the anime industry. So to be honest, that is to be expected. I expect this trend to continue in the years to come.

I forget that Peacock has anime, they don't even have an animated section so without knowing a specific series I had to dig through genres. I'm really glad I did though because I have been wanting to watch Cromartie High School for awhile now!

What goes up, will eventually go down. I wonder if it also applies here.

Well there was the Covid dip since then, but it may slow, but it shouldnt dip for a long time at this rate. My only issue is man the amount of tourists and toxic new gen fans are an absolute pain online. Theyre all so sensitive and complain about basic fan service; like its [expletive] anime, its kind of its thing. Sadly, theyre clearly here to stay if these figures are anything to go off. |

Unless streaming suffer from some kind of scandal, or a major technological drawback which for now I don't see, then no. But I do see couple of problems which I'll talk about below. But as I said in the past, I have a major love-hate with streaming in general whether it's Netflix, Crunchyroll (before they went premium and Sony/Aniplex bought them out), Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max. The problem is when it comes to 4K UHD is that the detail and the HDR (that applied to Dolby Vision) aren't as sharp or detailed like compare to the Blu-ray/4K UHD BD. My other problems with streaming:
If you believed I missed anything else about the problem and drawback of streaming for customers/consumers and anime fans, please let me know below. Last edited by mdo7 on Wed Jan 08, 2025 7:25 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Really hope that the production committee now would consider renewing anime for new season that the previous season did well in overseas in both streaming and merchandise but not meeting expectation in Japan.

That would be great, but it'll draw ire from the "western companies shouldn't be involved with anime production" folks in the US even though we already had anime aimed at the US audiences before (ie: Little Nemo, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, etc...). I really hate those type of anime fans that think like that. |

Well rest assured this already happens and has been happening for years now. Most recent time I can think of is the Black Butler anime staff saying overseas popularity was the major reason they brought it back. |

Exactly. Cash is cash. Just because it comes from somewhere else does not mean it is not money. |

Hulu generated nearly as much money as Crunchyroll despite their anime graveyard reputation. Interesting.

It's kind of sad how little impact HiDive has had on the overall anime industry when they didn't even break into the top streaming sites and even Amazon had more impact than them. Though I imagine part of this is probably from Amazon Japan.

there is also another factor as well. because of certain japanese companies deciding to region block all overseas servers, they also lost foreign customers that prefer to import from the source! punishing all overseas customers in hopes that those same customers will pressure visa/mastercard to change course in their policy is a bad strategy! |

As of 2020, they had 300,000 subscribers (there isn't more recent data).
There's also the issues of how they pulled out of many markets, lots of series have constantly been removed no matter how big without warning (Ex: Made in Abyss S1 is missing, only S2 is on there as of this post) sometimes after not much time (Ex: Escha Chron was removed after less than 2 years), the apps having many problems, them getting only a small handful of titles per season, sometimes as little as like 2 (Spring 2024: Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night and Whisper Me a Love Song, that was their entire simulcast lineup for new titles, and Urusei Yatsura was the only ongoing one from the prior season), and it's not surprising they're not contributing that much at the end of the day. The HIDIVE subreddit also gives an idea of things. https://www.reddit.com/r/Hidive/ [Edit]You can now add "They gave advanced notice, but only a 2 day notice on 3 Winter 2023 titles, including one Sentai was on the production committee for (Giant Beast of Ars)." Yeah, that's not going to help HIDIVE survive or contribute much.
