I still maintain that this is giving quickie placeholder-title vibes, and it was rushed out to try and capture the audience that the other VR fangames for AoT have accrued. AoT fangames have existed in varying quality since the dawn of the Unity web plugin, but if you check around YouTube for what some of the more modern attempts of translating Attack on Titan into VR look like, it should become apparent pretty quickly that UNIVRS' version is probably not going to be the best-looking for fullest-featured.

Now to to the credit of UNIVRS, this trailer is currently looking a lot better than their general gameplay had been the last time I saw it, and there seems to be a lot more "game" here than the recent Gundam VR "movie" that got put out. That's fine. But I've seen a couple other VR projects launch with part 1/part 2 stuff going on, and its setting off warning flags that they're trying to get money for the most minimum of viable products. The big free one that is in development has open-world horseback and a much more coherent visual style, and generally looks like a much larger game.

What's the point of my mentioning all of this? These VR game companies keep releasing "experiences", and what we need instead is smart game design. I keep seeing stuff like fans converting the original NES Zelda into VR with the Doom engine, and it's instantly the exact sort of bop that I as a classic Zelda fan wanna see more of. The Gundam one doesn't really function well as a viewable movie or as a game - its execution is pretty floppy. Square just released Triangle Strategy and it's almost a great VR conversion..... were it not for the fact that you spend way more time than you should looking at flat story renders rather than the narrative action playing out on the game field with the little grab-able character figurines.

I hope that the UNIVRS AoT game eventually feels like a fully-featured title once the whole thing is out, but let's call this release what it is - you're paying $5 to play a demo and test this out because VR is "new and exciting", and AoT is one of the top most-recogniseable anime IPs out there. And then you'll be expected to pay the full actual price of the game once that's out. Check the video's description for their pricing tiers on the YT page.
