With what we have so far, I'm inclined to believe Iyoku is the good guy here. From the wording in the source, it sounds like Toriyama trusted him. And since we apparently avoided crappy Dragon Ball AI and metaverse stuff while instead getting a Sand Land revival, it's easy to see why.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting. Iyoku was slow to implement AI and metaverse? Sounds like a good guy to me!
Plus if Toriyama complained when Iyoku got moved, that clearly means Toriyama liked the guy, trusted him and wanted to keep working with him. Maybe Iyoku just didn't play nice with the higher ups, and instead acted with Toriyama's feelings in mind.

Toriyama's estate will put their weight behind Iyoku because he is their guy in the room and they should have inherited Toriyama´s 50% +1 stake in the manga or however you want to call it.
Shaman King, Saint Seiya and Battle Angel Alita have all slipped from Shueisha´s grasp and all are international bestsellers adapted into multiple media. Who knows what DB´s future is but there is no reason why Jump should co-own it forever. Iyoku´s reported clash with studio and animation heads is frankly more interesting but that can simply be the usual production drama. DB has a long history of that going back to the 80s.

Toyotarou said this year that the DBS manga will come back and there are 2 complete arcs and a Super Hero extension already adaptation ready. DBD might end up being the 2nd to last project (outside of Dragon Quest designs) that Akira Toriyama was involved in to hit animation so good luck getting those contracts sorted if we are already stuck deep inside a well on a reported to-be-finished production. A Courtroom Saga isn´t what anyone wants Toriyama´s legacy to become and I can´t see a Black Frieza cliffhanger being left hanging.

Yes, same here. I would hate if Dragonball franchise would get into a copyright hell lockdown if they can't get it resolve, and that would upset many fans both in Japan & internationally. The franchise makes a lot of money, don't let it go down the drain and become a lost (maybe forgotten) lucrative Intellectual properties.

Japanese lawmakers and policymakers really needs to fix their copyright laws to prevent something like this in case if the creators died and there's no rightsholder who can inherit/buy the copyrights to the IP. I mean let me quote Justin Sevakis aka Answerman from 2018 on why older anime don't get re-release (even in Japan, and I'll include this 2015 Answerman article on that):

The Japanese copyright system gives an enormous amount of control to the original creator of a work, be it a light novel author, manga artist, game publishing group, or anime studio. And they are under absolutely NO obligation to do so.

Sure, they might get a little bit more money. Many in the anime industry get very frustrated when this happens, because they know there are fans that could be satisfied, and money that could be made. But if the original creator isn't interested, there's really not a whole lot that could be done.

Reason 3: Nobody knows who owns it.

A lot of original works made decades ago weren't made by production committees like they are today. Often, in the 80s and 90s, anime would be produced primarily by one or two companies, and many of those companies went out of business. Some of them did so in an orderly way, where another company bought the assets, or a remaining partner inherited the rights once held by the deceased company. But other times, it's not at all clear who owns the show after that.

Any disc publisher or streaming service in Japan or any other country would have to track down who owns a particular show and buy the rights if they're to make it available. But often times it's not even clear who they can even ask. If all of the involved companies are dead, the people that ran them are no longer in the business (or also dead), who could possibly authorize its further release? No legitimate company could ever release something without being able to prove that they have the rights to do so. (What if somebody sued?) And so, the title languishes.

Reason 4: The Producers Are Feuding.

Every once in a while, a production committee becomes dysfunctional, companies that once partnered together turn on each other, and massive fights completely derail any attempt to make money off of an anime. For an example of this, one needs to look no further than Macross, and the years-long legal fight between Tatsunoko Pro and Studio Nue over its ownership. That particular case didn't stop the franchise's release in Japan, but it very well could have.

I know of at least one show that has never seen release outside of VHS because its two producers hate each other and refuse to do anything that would enrich the other. There are, I am told, dozens more.


Read reason #3, that's what's going to happen to Dragonball franchise if the copyright doesn't get fix. This is why Japanese copyrights need to be revise and fix for that reason, because if the Dragonball franchise IP and copyright fall and nobody can get it and it's not in public domain, then it cannot get any future re-releases or any new products or titles in the future meaning Dragonball will become a lost IP forever if the copyright doesn't get resolved. This is why I'm a big critic of Japanese copyright laws, because of what I just quoted the 2018 Answerman article above.

Just let Toriyama and Dragon Ball rest. We don't need more, he did so much, and the series has done everything there is to do.

Saint Seiya hasn't hasn't "slipped" from Shueisha's grasp in any way. If it had then it wouldn't still be selling the manga digitally in Japan, and Viz wouldn't continue to offer it both digitally & via the SJ Vault, which is exactly what happened with Shaman King & Alita (& Zatch Bell, even earlier).

All that's happened is that Kurumada decided to have Akita Shoten publish Saint Seiya: Final Edition, likely because Shueisha simply wasn't interested (& had right of first refusal, since they still offer the OG version), same as how Shueisha likely wasn't interested in filling up space in its various manga magazines with Saint Seiya spin-offs, which Akita Shoten has been perfectly fine with for the past 20+ years. Shueisha, though, still has full rights to the OG version of Saint Seiya, and is also the primary publisher for, like, 95% of Kurumada's entire catalog, to start with. The last release of Fuma no Kojirou, the "Ultimate Final Edition" from 2019 & 2020, was published by a division Shogakukan but it didn't mean that FnK "slipped" out of Shueisha's hands, since they still offer the OG version.

As for the stuff happening with Dragon Ball's rights, I also 100% side with Iyoku in this situation. The man has seemingly done nothing but think about what would benefit Toriyama & his works the most, instead of simply going along with whatever hairbrained scheme Shueisha had in mind. In fact, every mangaka should have an "Iyoku" that makes decisions like these based on the best interests of the mangaka. Toriyama's family & estate are super lucky to have a guy like Iyoku on their side.

I doubt anyone wants a Rings of Power situation with Dragonball. I agree we should let the franchise sleep after Daima. Maybe a new anime adaption of the manga decades into the future but that's about it.

There is nothing to be gained with letting a franchise die.

Even if there are some bad parts, at least good memes can be created, even Heroes, regardless of how ridiculous that promo series is, is still watched, and liked by many, many people.

Decades into the future?

We kind of ARE already decades into the future from the original adaptation, not to mention, why should anyone be waiting even longer; life really isn't that long.


I can't talk much about latest LotR, or Star Wars stuff under Disney, or Amazon, but from what I read from other people, unpopular opinions which really aren't unpopular, Most of them are glad that, for all their bad sides, those franchises are still alive, and fans have Content to talk about.

I woundn’t really use Rings Of Power as an example since a good chunk of the hate for that series is from people who apparently don’t like how the series differs substantially from the Tolkiens original lore.

Eventhough practically every adaptation before that took a number of liberties with the lore.

These people hoping the franchise would be "put to rest" are completely delusional, to say the least, lol. Check the annual reports, DB is the biggest source of income for both Toei and Bandai Namco. It's not Macross or another niche franchise, it's simply massive. The parties will have to find a way to work this out, as there's no way they would agree on a "everyone loses" situation here. Not to mention the manga is confirmed to be returning, and DB is even getting a special stage on Jump Festa this year, which doesn't happen since 2018, IIRC.
