To me, the monster looks like someone's attempt at trying to draw an illithid that they botched so badly, that they didn't even get in the tentacles.

I was hoping for a Buried Treasure article that would make up for the last one but it's such fun to read about all the garbage anime that I missed by coming in so late, that I don't mind.

Ah, Roots Search. The anime Alien rip-off that makes Lily C.A.T. look good. I'm sad to find that there isn't a dub, because I'd really like to hear some CPM-hired voice actor from 1992 saying "That's too horrible for a young woman to see."

But what's all this about Hiroshi Negishi not having a career? He went on to a lot of great things! Besides perfecting the art of the mediocre '90s OVA, he directed the most tolerable (i.e. the least harem-ish) parts of Tenchi Muyo, the Master of Mosquiton OVA, and, uh, that one part in the Shadow Skill OVA-movie where the hero's fighting his sister in a coliseum and she kicks him into the air and jumps up and slams him into a stone column and then she kicks the WHOLE column IN HALF and both it and the hero go flying into the stands and it EXPLODES or something.

Yeah, I guess Negishi isn't that great.

Hmm, maybe I should add this to my list of 'watch when I have nothing better to do in my time, and hopefully it'll give me some good laughs.' So besides that point, the story presented seems to be one that makes for a B-movie in America, one where everybody decides to act stupid. And like you said Justin, nothing gets accomplished.

Strangely, the screenplay was written by Michiru Shimada, and by his already well-established track record of successes (such as Nobody's Boy - Remi, Urusei Yatsura and later You're Under Arrest, Spirit of Wonder and One Piece) I can only guess that he did this over a lunch hour as a favor to someone he didn't really like.

Somehow, I can really, really see someone doing this!

Great line! Made me laugh.

(Please note that said monster's mouth is sideways, and looks very much like a vagina with teeth.)

So true, that was the first thing I thought of when I saw that picture of the alien.

Not that I'm to suggest that Roots Search isn't as awful as it sounds or that Voices From a Disant Star isn't a masterpiece, but from how Roots is described the two OVAs seem to share a similarity.
Correct me if I misread Roots' review, but it appears that both of them spoiler[end with the main characters being together in each other's minds despite impending doom], which is sad for Roots' sake considering how effective such a concept was in Voices.

There is simply nothing good about Roots Search.

I think Kevin was being to harsh with that line. He didn't consider the cast! According to the Encyclopedia, veteran seiyuus Banjou Ginga, Kenyuu Horiuchi and the late Kaneto Shiozawa among others were in this title. He could've at least give those great voices some recognition.
But yeah, this title does sound, if anything, stupid.

But Voices wasn't really about the alien threat; it was about love spanning time and distance and the aliens just happen to be the cause of the seperation, whereas Roots seems to be about an alien that mind-rapes people to death and there's a romantic plot, too.

The plot sounds a lot like Event Horizon, but I find it hard to believe an auteur like Paul W. S. Anderson would ever produce an unimaginative and derivative film.

That is a cool Giger-esque cover, tho'.

Wow there were more 80's PornOVA's then I thought. I thought there were only a few like Kite, M.D Geist and something called Tokyo Project that aired on IFC once. Manga Entertainment was really into releasing these types of PornOVA's (I call them that because they seem to strive for sex, blood and violence married with unbelievably ugly character designs) back in the day to.

What goes around, comes around. Wink The creature looks like one of the servant family of Princess Kahm in Outlanders.

Hey... the monster's head really does look like a vulva with teeth! Mine isn't as bitey.

I don't think I'll ever see this, I'm still curious about Garzey's Wing, but most of the Buried Garbage segments are of no interest. Scratch My Breast is a very unfortunate Engrish title, rather like calling a song "kick your balls in gear" which I can see happening. Or maybe "cramp up the volume". It's interesting thinking about the ways in which language can be misinterpreted, like that whole "Ich bin ein Berliner" thing, berliner meaning donut in german, the correct way to say what was actually meant would be "Ich bin Berliner".

One thing to note here is that Michiru Shimada (who is referred to as "he" in the article) is female, or at least if her Japanese Wikipedia entry is correct. That's really nitpicky, I know. It's just something I noticed, though, since I've looked up her credits before.

At least Voices was a decent read, I can't imagine myself ever watching this, after having read this. I can't believe they made something without a definitive ending. They could have at least left it as an allegory.
