Congrats to the first PG-13 Animated movie to win. IIRC, it's the first win for GKids, too. Good luck to Godzilla.

I haven't gotten around to seeing either movie but I was seriously considering placing money on The Boy and the Heron since I thought that the betting sites were underestimating Hayao Miyazaki (they had Across the Spider-Verse as the odds-on favourite to win).
I know the previous three Hayao Miyazaki films post-Spirited Away didn't win Best Animated Feature but The Boy and the Heron was his first feature film after a decade-long hiatus and, considering he's 83, the Academy might not get another chance to give him a BAF Oscar again. No, it didn't receive nominations from the Annie Awards & British Academy Film Awards. It received awards from them. Oh damn! I was fully expecting it to lose because of how biased the Oscars tend to be for Disney and Pixar. You go, Miyazaki and everyone at Ghibli!

Saw the news notification on my phones, and I was half-surprised that the film won best animated pictures, I had medium-low hope that the film wouldn't win, and I was proven wrong.

I'm glad I managed to saw the movie in the cinema a couple of months ago. I'd say it was one of Miyazaki's best movies, perhaps not my favourite movies of his, but it's nice to see a traditionally animated movie winning an Oscar, though technically the only other winner is Miyazaki's own Spirited Aways. I hope that some day some 2D non-anime movie will manage to win an Academy Award, i've heard some great things about Robot Dreams (Mi Amigo Robot), but it sadly got overshadowed by other animated movies, though this year all of the nominees were excellent movies on their own right

Not really. It's not a great sign for anime cinema that the second anime film in a century went to the one from the same director threatening his retirement in an off year for Disney. It also doesn't help that it was up against Across the Spider-Verse, which is, in every way possible, a more triumphant step forward for animation as a medium. Call me cynical if you want, but if Miyazaki is working on another movie, The Boy and the Heron will likely be remembered as a footnote in his career. I know it will because the same thing to The Wind Rises, the last time he made his last movie. |
