Yeah, nothing says that something was definitely a success and not a horrible failure like making the 3rd and 4th sequels of the dead horse you've been beating and then immediately saying you're not going to beat the horse any more.

Quote: | stated on Twitter on Friday that while Adult Swim "considers [FLCL: Grunge] and [FLCL: Shoegaze] ratings successes and is very happy with their performance |
From my limited look around the web, Grunge was universally disliked, and Shoegaze is not much better.

I definitely hope not. I don't exactly think Progressive and Alternative ruined anything and they both have points in their favor, but after the first episode of Grunge I just haven't been able to bring myself to watch the rest or Shoegaze. It's pretty well past time to just let it die.

That's why it's important to ride on the hype wave while it's still big and fresh enough in people mind. The 4 episodes so far weren't bad just decent so without the franchise's old hype carrying them there wasn't much to expect, alternative and progressive already proved it 5 years ago.

Good.
The entirety of the new content has been absolute garage and shat on the legacy of the original.

~~Not sure why the default assumption is that he's lying, if you actually think about this at all whatsoever. Both the new series are only 3 episodes each, which wasn't even revealed until midway through one of them airing, because there's been zero proper marketing, conversations with the anime staff, etc.
It's true that these works don't seem particularly successful, but it seems very clear to me that the productions had already been screwed over somehow. I'm not sure who's fault this is because again, the development history of these series is frustratingly elusive (there are zero artbooks for any of them, quite a rarity in anime like this). A bunch of weird behind the scenes stuff probably went wrong long ago and it left everyone with a show to air but not much else.~~
EDIT: Actually, it turns out Production IG pitched these ones to Adult Swim in the first place, which makes the reactions to this even more misaimed. It may be AS that didn't give them as much funding, though, if AS doesn't really want to be involved anymore?

Just the other day he was acting like this was just the beginning. I guess someone pulled rank.

Should've left FLCL alone. It was and still IS perfect just the way it is. It didn't need sequels.

The ratings (for what little they mean these days on linear channels) did show both FLCL sequels beating Housing Complex C around the same time last year. So by that token, it is a success.
Granted, the whole of Toonami seems to be falling apart, so success is relative. Still, he's not wrong. I also don't think anyone is upset with the idea that we won't be seeing any more FLCL.

Almost every anime I ever click on on MAL has a rating between 6 and 8, that's the most pointless statistic in the whole world.
E: Just clicked a random sample of shows I personally love that aren't mainstream popular from my list and almost all of them were 6.something, with a *few* of them being 7.something. Many of these were classics to me. God, imagine suggesting Alien Nine, Black Rock Shooter, Key the Metal Idol, Puni Puni Poemi, were "universally hated".

They're the kinds of people who take Sturgeon's Law way too seriously.

Whenever I see the topic FLCL sequels get brought up, I get the idea that everyone forgets Production I.G's involvement and blames it all on [as], despite the fact that I.G owns the FLCL IP.

It was starting to get to the point where the original was starting to feel like a footnote, similar to how the original Star Wars trilogy feels like a tiny part of the franchise.
